Budget Stylista: Sequins, Sequins All The Time

January 15, 2010     Posted in Fashion, Style

It seems sequins aren’t going anywhere. At least not in 2010. I, for one, am a fan. I love walking around town feeling like I belong in an 1983 music video, or at my 1990 dance recital. What I love about the ‘quins is that it is totally acceptable (within reason) to wear them any time. From the bar, on the walk of shame home from the bar, to dinner, to class (yes, even class), it seems that a little bling is now A-OK.

Not sure how much is too much? Don’t know how to work sequins into your everyday look? Allow me to assist. Here is one super fun, super fly, super duper versatile sequined tank worked out for 3 different situations.

The Day/Class/I hope I’m Not Too Flashy Look:
The key to wearing sequins during the day is to keep it light and surround it by very basic pieces. What you end up with is a cute look that has just a hint of shine coming through. I love this citrine tank, so throw a black sweater over it for just a pop of fun. Or, if yellow doesn’t really work for you, go for a monochromatic look: get the sequined tank in navy and top it with a navy cotton cardigan. You still get the shine but the darker colors tone things down a bit while keeping it perfectly adorable.

The Out-on-the-Town Look:
This mini skirt/sequins/gold studs combo screams rock and roll and is the perfect complement to your vodka-soda. OK, so everything looks good with a vodka soda, but seriously – how hot is this little ensemble? You’ve got a great mixture of edgy and sweet, and even with all the great detailing you’ve got going on, that sparkly tank is still the main event.

Spring Break
I know, I know – I’m seriously getting ahead of myself here. But it’s important to think ahead when snagging new duds; you want to be sure to pick things that can really go far. And Spring Break (or this coming Spring/Summer) is coming faster than you might think. (The faster the better – please and thanks.) Pair the citrine sequin top with white jeans, cute sandals, bomb shades and some self tanner and you will be sequined to perfection. For real, nothing looks better with some perfectly bronzed (from the bottle, not the tanning bed!) skin than a little sparkle.

Blerg. Is it Spring yet?!
