Also make sure you get to meet and feel comfortable with the landlord before you sign away a year of your life. I live in a great house, cheap rent and utilities but the landlord is very inconsiderate and makes it difficult to get any repairs done.

If you can, talk to the people who currently live in the apartment you want. They'll probably give you some good tips.

Soooo true about roommates. All my former best friends and I are no longer on speaking terms. Living together definitely brought out the worst in us. I feel like our friendships deteriorated in college; we grew up and also apart, so the end result would have been the same anyway. But being roommates definitely pushed things to the breaking point 10x faster. Looking back though, the good memories are irreplaceable so I don't regret it.

Other stuff to pay attention to is utilities, maintenance upkeep and availability, noise, cost of laundry (sometimes it's ridiculous how much they charge!), parking…
