Whitney Port: The Next Big Fashion Thang?

March 12, 2010     Posted in Fashion, Style

Whitney Port, ex-“Hill’s” star and current star of “The City,” recently showed her newest Whitney Eve collection at the Fresh Faces in Fashion event in Miami, FL.  Co-star Lauren Conrad has proven to us all that just because someone dresses well or has trendy personal style, does not make them a good designer (or even a good discount designer).  Arch-nemesis Heidi Montag has also proven that turning yourself into real-life Barbie does not mean you can change your career choice daily: you cannot be a “singer” one day and a “designer” the next.

After two boring, copycat lines from these battling blondes failed miserably, we all expected (and maybe hoped?) that Whitney’s would be equally lame.  Just because of her MTV status, Whitney is a character that we love to hate.  We deem her untalented, famous for being famous and of course we all know that her “jobs” are staged for the show.  Before her lines are even shown, we get ready to read Whitney-bashing reviews and joke about how much they suck.

Whitney’s first line, although more creative than Lauren’s (and obviously Heidi’s) was still somewhat expected.  The patterns and details were unique, but the hemlines reflected the lifestyle of a typical Hollywood Barbie.  Look after look, models pranced down the runway in the miniest of mini’s, minimal coverage throughout. The actual design wasn’t terrible, but because of the skank-factor we were still free to ridicule.

But after viewing her latest, I’ve gotta say, she’s proved us all wrong.  Surprisingly, Whitney’s latest line was more conservative and mature but stayed edgy, creative, and sexy.  There were knee-length skirts and somehow even floor-length skirts?  An appearance of pants also made the cut while a pair of white lace leggings supplemented a mini-skirt.

This didn’t look like some boring line by a wannabe designer; Whitney’s designs were the real deal. Could it be that a Hill’s star actually has talent?? Could Whitney Port be the next Marc Jacobs, Gwen Stefani, or, dare I say it, DVF?

With a clear vision and obvious talent, I think Whitney Port may be a not-so-reality-TV success story.

Yes it looks very generic and dull, yet at the same time unflattering. Not a great combination. Also, it looks like someone trying very hard to add detail and interest, but it doesn't flow and seems very uninspired.

And I don't think it's fair to say people dislike her just because she is an MTV reality star, as if it is just a prejudice. I am put off by the personality she displays on the shows. I don't hate her, I just find how vacant she comes across extremely frustrating. By vacant, I don't mean dumb – more that there is either very little depth to her, or she doesn't let people in at all. Of all the people on the Hills to get their own show, I would never have thought Whitney would. I could see anyone else ahead of her, even Audrina – hell, even Justin Bobby – getting their own spin-off. There is just nothing there that she lets us get to know. I gave her show a chance to see if there was more to her, but all I've seen in the same distant, vacant delivery of sentiments that seem heavily filtered to come out as what people around her want to hear.

Her talent as a designer is extremely thin so it's pretty clear she wouldn't have this chance without reality fame. And when we can't even get to know her in that medium, why am I supposed to root for her at all when she comes out with a mediocre/ugly fashion line? I guess I just feel like, rather than people having a prejudiced view of her as a reality star that might stop them seeing her 'talent', this article is too biased toward giving her a chance disproportionate to the fashion design skill she really has.

Okay, this is unbelievable. I don't understand where this respect for Whitney as a fashion designer has derived from. Perhaps it was Kelly Coutrone who set it off by announcing on public tv that she believes in her and I quote "will be her loyal bitch" but wtf, honestly. THIS GIRL HAS NO TALENT. I'm not being a hater, I enjoy watching the City, i don't care if she's a reality tv star or an alien with green dots, REGARDLESS, she lacks talent, there's more talented and driven aspiring fashion designers out there than Whitney Port.

So far, everything Whitney does and the opportunities she's been given has been because other people pushed her ie Kelly, Roxy etc. She can't think on her own to feet to save her life, and honestly, in the first season she didn't know who Linda Fargo was….. That is just plain rude. How can you claim to be passionate about fashion and not know any of the big names within the industry? It's as offensive as if I'd be into music but not really know who Madonna was.

I think it's unfair that Whitney keeps wasting these people's time when there's greater talent out there who works twice as hard trying to showcast their work. I mean, just look at project runway. Hell, EVERY finalist on that show has created MUCH better clothes for their final collection in one season than Whitney has in 2 years. Cristian Siriano would NEVER bring cheap ass clothes made with cheap ass fabrics to show at Bergdorf Goodman. Like who does Whitney think she is???? AND HOW can she not be more happy when Kelly tells her she gets to show at NY fashion week?? Like, frickin show some passion, it's like she doesn't even wanna be a designer.

And honestly, if Joe Zee, Anne Slowey, Linda Fargo and basically, all of new york saw my collection and nothing had still really happened for me, I'd be like.. Ok what am i doing.

Whitney has every opportunity at hand especially with the support of Kelly and yet… SHES NOBODY in terms of fashion design. Get the hint, Whit.
