Campus Couture: Scaachi, Ryerson University

[While everyone is fabulous in their own right, we thought we should celebrate the campus fashionistas of the world for their continued excellence in not looking like a hot mess for class. So, we started stalking those girls on campus (think Victoria's fun accessories) to get a few pics and get some tips on their personal style.

And maybe a restraining order or two.

But it’s worth it to highlight fresh, unique wardrobe choices that show personality and the courage to wear what you believe in. You think you’ve got some major style? Know someone else who’s always looking ferosh? Think the world needs to see what she can do? Send us an email with some photos and she could be the next fashionista celebrated right here.]

For someone who adores UFC, Scaachi definitely does not dress the part (though if you bought her a “Tap out” t-shirt she’d probably love you forever).  The first time I was formally introduced to Scaachi, she was dressed like Jackie O. (it was Halloween), but since then I’ve always admired her feminine style.  I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve seen her in pants in the months I’ve known her, as she says skirts and dresses are much more sophisticated and give her room to move (in case she needs to practice her wrestling moves?).

The perfect example of how to make discount fashion look good, Scaachi always looks put together, despite the fact that she shops at some of the thriftiest stores around. But what stands out about her most is her signature accessory: an interesting, unique coat. She’s always got one topping off her outfits and the day I found her, it was this black brocade coat that stopped me in my tracks. It was so beautiful, yet so understated at the same time (much like all of Scaachi’s accessory choices). She didn’t look like a girl on her way to class – she looked like some fabulous fashion magazine editor on her way to a shoot.

Maybe it’s her attention to detail, maybe it’s her ability to mix things together to get just the right look, or maybe it’s the bold lip she favors (which most college girls shy away from), but this girl’s got a style that totally inspires me.

Name: Scaachi Koul
Year: 2012
Program: Journalism

1. Describe your personal style.
I am ready to go to Anna Wintour’s funeral at any time.

2. Complete this sentence: You can’t leave your house without….
The ring that I wear on my right hand. It’s from my grandmother who died.

3. What are your favorite stores to shop at?
I like Joe Fresh (at Loblaw’s in Canada) because it’s cheap.  It may fall apart in six months, but it was $4 and I could afford it.

4. What/who is the biggest influence on your style?
I like Tina Fey, she seems to be the right combination of crust and charming.  She dresses smart.

5. What’s your favorite trend past or present?
I don’t really like trends because they go away and you feel like a jerk when you look back and realize you were wearing it for a year.  But I have been wearing belted dresses a lot.

On Scaachi:
Coat, skirts, shoes and top: Joe Fresh
Tights: Vintage
Ring: one was her grandmother’s and the other was a gift
Watch, belt and pearls: mom’s closet

I am the director of my clogele’s program for student volunteers for the Office of Admissions. So, I am deeply involved in the clogele touring process. I don’t think you are saying that a virtual tour can take the place of a real tour, but I would like make that point a little more clear and expound the importance of actually visiting a campus. As you imply in the final sentence, I think the strategies you suggest are great for preliminary clogele searches they can be a great way to whittle a list of, say, 20 clogeles down to 3 to 5 top choices. But once you’ve narrowed it down to a smaller number, I think it is vital to actually tour the campus, and, if possible, to stay overnight.Call me old-fashioned, but there’s nothing like interpersonal interactions to really get a feel for a place. I attend a clogele that prides itself on its friendly, polite student body. We have a tradition of saying hello to every person we pass, even if we don’t know them. This kind of thing, as simple as it may be, can really determine whether or not you feel comfortable on a campus and can greatly affect your decision, even if you’re not necessarily aware of it. By relying solely on a clogele’s websites, social media pages, etc., you aren’t getting the full story. We don’t put 100% trust in car advertisements do we? Colleges control the content of those site, so obviously it is going to be all positive. Of course, you won’t get many negatives on a tour, either. That’s why I think it is important to stay overnight at a your top few choices. It really gives you a feel for what life really is like at that school, and you will get a well-rounded perspective of both negatives and positives. Finally, I think that there is something intangible about clogele choices. Lately, there has been a lot of talk about fit. Which clogele fits you? For me, this was something that I could never put into words. I could make pros and cons lists all day, but nothing superseded the feeling I got when I walked on the campus of the place I ended up choosing. It just felt right. I wish I could explain it better than that, but I really can’t. There was just a certain feeling I got every time I set foot on the campus to this day.So, I think the techniques you suggest are valuable, and, as you say at the end, they shouldn’t discourage actual visits. I just wanted to offer my perspective on why that is.
