Coupled. In Church

In the few weeks before I moved away for college 3 years ago, I remember being over at a friend’s house when the topic of religion in college was brought up by her mom. She was a big supporter of being active in a church at school, arguing that it was the best place to meet like-minded people. “If you find someone in college that you fall in love with, it’ll be a heck of a lot easier if they’re the same religion as you.”

Back then I thought that religion should have nothing to do with love, but I may be starting to see her point of view.

I was raised Catholic. My boyfriend Matt was raised mainly by his Presbyterian mother, but his dad was Catholic and so Matt was baptized as an infant. In all reality, neither of us are very religious now. Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve considered myself Christian, but have never been a big fan of organized religion. My beliefs are my own and I don’t like other people forcing their beliefs on to me.

None of that really means much now, religion doesn’t really come up much in our college relationship, but with Matt and I planning our future together, the topic of kids came up which begged the question: Do we raise them in the church, and if so, which one? Read More »

Fashion Porn: Work Wear Basics

It’s that time of year again – the time to start hunting for summer jobs or internships (if you haven’t already), or start hunting for job or internship wardrobes (if you’ve already secured the gig). If you’re working in an office or a professional environment chances are you’re going to need to pick up a few pieces. Contrary to what some people think, Uggs and flip flops are not acceptable at most office jobs.

But don’t worry – you don’t have to pre-spend all that money you’re about to earn on a new work wardrobe. There are a few basics that can help make getting dressed for interviews or a work day simple. Just mix-and-match these with your everyday stuff and you’ll have plenty of options all summer long.

Well-fitted basics are the groundwork for a put together, streamlined outfit.  Dressing these up with accessories, or fun extras – tops, cardigans, or shoes – add personality to simple pieces and keep you lookin’ like you (and not some dowdy old lady).  If you want to hold onto these pieces for the future, it’s always good to spend a bit more and invest in pieces that fit well and are good quality. However, if you have a limited budget, many discount stores offer cheaper alternatives that will get you through your summer gig. Read More »

iPad? iDon’t Think So

The iPad.  Steve Jobs’ newest brainchild, and a super….whatever it is.  Despite the fact that we’re not always sure what point Apple’s devices serve, we always seem to get them, love them, and become suddenly unable to live without them.

But this thing?  Meh, not so much. The iPad’s got a hefty price tag that will set any college student back and I’m just not sure it’s worth it. Based on what I’ve seen, I’m pretty sure I could take that $600 elsewhere (like, I don’t know, the bar?) and be a whole lot happier.

Here’s why:

Apple Says: OMG EMAIL IS SO EASY TO CHECK!
Reality: Yeah, email is easy to check everywhere. Like on my laptop, my phone, or the 3,000 computers scattered around my campus. In fact, sometimes I wish my email were less accessible. If my profs knew they could contact me on yet another device, I’d never have the “I didn’t realize the assignment had been revised” excuse.

Apple Says: AHHH! YOU CAN READ MAGAZINES/NEWSPAPERS/BOOKS ON IT!!!
Reality: Or – and here’s a crazy thought – you could read actual newspapers/magazines/books.  Some of them are more portable than this thing and a hell of a lot cheaper. And if you really want an e-reader, the Kindle costs way less and won’t kill your eyes.

Apple Says: WOW YOU CAN LISTEN TO MUSIC ON IT SO EASILY!!!
Reality: You know what else you can listen to music on?  An iPod.  Which is also Apple. And much smaller and easier to use.  Plus, in the immortal words of Phyllis from The Office, “If you don’t have an iPod by now, you really don’t want one.” Read More »

We’re Giving Away Three Copies of the TFLN Book!

It is a regular occurrence when I find myself clicking through text after text on Texts From Last Night, with my eyes glazed over and my homework untouched.  But I will argue that I find the activity therapeutic and entertaining and I’m sure all of you will rightfully agree. The perfect procrastination tool and conversation starter, TFLN is not a shot less than brilliant.  I like to think of it as the ‘American Pie’ of of websites – one of those gems that was created for our generation to bask in our outrageous glory.

Who knew stories created in T9 could ever be so priceless?
Or turned into a book?

Yes, this is great news for those of you unable to drag your computer everywhere to keep up with all the TFLN you can handle. Or for the rest of you who love quoting TFLN at parties, but can’t risk bringing your computer that close to the keg…again….

The geniuses behind everyone’s favorite website, Detroit natives Lauren Leto and Ben Bater, have turned this gem into a so-funny-you-actually-ROTFL book.

And more good news: College Candy is giving three of them away. FOR FREE. Could you imagine anything better? I mean, if the site makes you LOL on a daily (or, more realistically, hourly) basis, just imagine how fabulous the book will be (besides the fact that there is no discreet way to read it in class….)!

So how do you win it? Read More »

The Know: Say Yes To Carrots!

Got something awesome everyone needs to know about? A really great local band? An awesome website? A product that truly changed your life? A great beauty product?! Email your “The Know” ideas to Jill@collegecandy.com or tweet me and I’ll pass them along to everyone right here, every week. Make your kindergarten teacher proud and share!

I know that in America we obsess over looks, always trying to look thinner, better, toned-er, younger. I’ve really been trying not to care, to love myself as I am now and not for who I might be if I were 6 pounds lighter with shinier hair. But seriously, I recently looked in the mirror and for the first time saw what I swear is a wrinkle under my eye.

A WRINKLE.

I know I only have myself to blame. My eyes look baggier, darker, and worse for the wear after all those all-nighters finishing finals followed by all-nighters celebrating that finals are so yesterday (literally). And while those all-nighters are worth it (well the celebratory ones), the consequences, yeah, not so much. Read More »

Which Easter Candy Takes the Cake? [POLL]

Ever since we were little kiddies, we’ve enjoyed the little party extras that come along with Easter Sunday.  Yes, I am thinking about peeling back the wrapping of a gigantic, dense and chocolaty Easter bunny, and biting off its head.

The greatest thing about Easter is not the flowery dresses or the long church services (sorry God), but the array of tasty candies to choose from. But that is where the issue arises. As much as you may be tempted to do so, you can’t eat every single candy in the basket, at least in one sitting. Unless you have the metabolism of a hummingbird in flight and no little cousins who cry when you eat all the Peeps.

So the question is, which candy do you grab first?  Which candy makes you start your Easter countdown on Halloween? If given an Easter basket, WWJD?

Campus Couture: Jessica, Quinnipiac University

While everyone is fabulous in their own right, we thought we should celebrate the campus fashionistas of the world for their continued excellence in not looking like a hot mess for class. So, we started stalking those girls on campus (remember Tatomme’s jumpsuit?!) to get a few pics and get some tips on their personal style.

And maybe a restraining order or two.

But it’s worth it to highlight fresh, unique wardrobe choices that show personality and the courage to wear what you believe in. You think you’ve got some major style? Know someone else who’s always looking ferosh? Think the world needs to see what she can do?  Send us an email with some photos and she could be the next fashionista celebrated right here.]

College is a world where even jeans stand out in a classroom. Sweat pants and leggings dominate the college fashion world, so when I saw Jessica wearing dark black ripped jeans, and long, dangly earrings, I was kind of hooked onto her style. She doesn’t just put on jeans and a cute shirt and call that fashionable. She layers her tops, dazzles it up with funky jewelry, and pulls it off with her chic haircut.

The great thing about Jessica’s style is that she doesn’t just stick to one. One day she’ll wear a flower halter top with waist-high pants for a fifties retro look, and the next day she’ll look like a total rocker with zebra pants and black wedged heels.

Yep, that’s right. She’s the girl who can pull off all those edgy clothing we’ve been dying to try. And not only does she look great in all these outfits, but she wears it all without a care. Her style is so effortless that it makes me regret the fifteen minutes it takes me just to choose which earrings will match my shirt best. Read More »

From PopEater: Miley Dishes on ‘The Last Song’

Exclusive: The Last Song‘ star Miley Cyrus dishes on ‘When I Look at You,’ the theme to her new film, which hit theaters yesterday, in an exclusive video that PopEater is proud to unveil. According to Miley, the emotional ballad is “a song that really describes this entire movie,” which is based on the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks (famed author of ‘The Notebook’ and ‘Dear John’).

In the video, we get a sneak peak at some scenes with Cyrus and her co-star — and current boyfriend — Liam Hemsworth. Cyrus also talks about learning the piano for her role as Ronnie Miller, a teen who rejects an acceptance letter from Julliard. Have a look at the ‘Last Song’ featurette right here.

Sexy Time: Getting Kinky

Some people are into long walks on the beach, candlelit dinners, and getting fancy. Other people are into staying in, watching movies, and keeping it low key. Some people work in big office buildings bringing in the cash, while others bus tables and do dishes for minimum wage. But what do all of these people have in common?  Some of them, from any category and walk of life, are into being tied up, spanked and dominated.

That’s right, folks, kinky people are everywhere.

I know when I used to think of “kink”, I would think of a leather daddy or someone who walks their boyfriend on a leash around the mall. We tend to be taught the extremes, so I never really thought of it any other way. Once I started educating myself on what it actually means to be kinky, I realized that the kinky lifestyle isn’t always so extreme after all.

Okay, so to start with, what is a kink? What’s a fetish? Broken down very simply, a kink is something that turns you on, while a fetish is something you have a hard time getting turned on without. Kinks are typically less extreme, like high heels and handcuffs, while a fetish is typically a bit more out there – like feet, centaurs, and genital mutilation. Not that there is anything wrong with either a kink or a fetish… that’s just usually how it plays out. Read More »
