House Parties Vs. The Campus Bar

I was feeling a little rebellious this past weekend, a little adventurous. So, I took a challenge and stepped out of my comfort zone by reacquainting myself with my freshman year of college. No, I didn’t make out with a dude on a futon, and no I didn’t burn my Easy-Mac in the microwave and induce a 4:30 AM fire alarm.

I went to a house party.
And I’m alive to tell the story!

It had been about 2 years since attending my last house party and while standing amongst a large cluster of shirtless freshman dudes sweating and spinning their shirts in the air to the beat of Sean Kingston, I realized something. I am no rocket scientist (clearly, on account of my next statement), but house parties so different than the bar. You would think they would be the same – drunk people standing around – but there’s something (maybe it’s the open keg at house parties that encourages half-naked mosh pits in the living room?) that sets these two party scenes miles apart: Read More »

Summer Break Is Almost Here – Yay?

Spring semester is winding down, and when we’re stuck in the library for 24 hours at a time with our eyes glued to a textbook and an energy drink surgically attached to our hands, it’s easy to count down to seconds until summer vacation. But as we all know, life back at home can be a drag an adjustment.

We’ve got it pretty easy on campus – sleeping till noon, going to class if and when we feel like it, and bar-hopping every night… while occasionally squeezing in some work. Pretending to be a real, responsible person when you get home to mom and pops can be a tough change. So while it’ll be all good in the hood to ditch those books in favor of mom and dad’s luxurious leather couch, there are a few things you might want to prepare yourself for before you head home for the summer. College Q&A: End Of The Year Roommate Issues

Got some college questions? Unsure of a decision? Thinking about dabbling in Adderall? (Don’t!) Just wanna chat it up with some really awesome chics? We’ve got the girls for you. Hit them up in the comments or shoot them an email with the subject “College Q&A”! They’ve got all the answers you need, no matter who you are.

Question:
Alright, I know this is coming really late (there’s only like 2 weeks left of school) but my roommate is driving me crazy. It’s like all the annoying things she did all year that I ignored are bubbling over and I want to punch her. She’s messy, she’s loud. Did I mention she’s messy? Like, underwear on the floor messy. I didn’t want to say anything to her because we don’t have any time left but with finals and everything I am really stressed and my room just isnt the sanctuary that I need it to be. Is it worth it to start a fight or should I just let it go? I mean, I’m pretty sure it’s not worth some big blow up (which I anticipate it being), but it’s my room too and I’m so annoyed with her I barely want to be in there. Read More »

Wardrobe Wishlist: Studded V-Neck Tee

Summer is all about easy style. In winter it’s totally acceptable to spend an hour building the perfect layered look, but when warm weather hits, throw-on-and-go becomes the getting dressed mentality. Which is why I love when I come across a piece that is simple and easy, and still totally chic.

That piece for me right now? Victoria’s Secrets Studded V-Neck Tee.

There are so many things I love about this t-shirt that I don’t even know where to start. The shape is killer, and I know this first hand because I own the original version without the studs…in 3 colors. It’s the perfect length; not too long that it feels really casual like a boyfriend tee but not so short that it keeps riding up all day. And the v-neck is really flattering, totally slimming and highlights your cleavage (or lack thereof) perfectly.

When I saw that my favorite tee was updated with gold studs I almost died. Now it’s not only a flattering fit and throw-on-and-go comfortable, but it has a rocker-chic edginess to it that totally dresses up a pair of jeans or a mini.

And the sheer lightweight cotton fabric will keep you cool in the heat waves of summer; we already have to worry about our makeup melting off, having pit stains is just one too many problems. Read More »

Chris Brown’s “Stupid Decision” Tour Continues

When it comes to dumb career moves, we thought Lindsay Lohan’s gun-to-the-face photo shoot was the worst. But, alas, Chris Brown has beaten someone once again (sorry, bad joke). This weekend, in an attempt to stay relevant and jump start his career, Mr. Brown accepted an offer to sing the National Anthem…

….at a boxing match.

Ironic? You betcha.

Who is this guy’s agent – Sam Lutfi? Spencer Pratt?

My god, homeboy needs some better people in his entourage, otherwise the next time we see him he’ll be burning American flags while he chokes poor, defenseless puppies.

Body Blog: Stay Healthy… Even During Finals!

Pulling all-nighters, running on coffee and 5-hour-energy shots, and making the library your new permanent residence? College is already hard enough! Then, at the end of every semester, we have to deal with EXAMS.

And, of course, studies show that women are at a higher risk for stress-induced eating and consequent weight gain. Blame it on cortisol – probably the suckiest hormone I’ve ever heard of. It’s a stress-related hormone that’s linked to weight gain (especially in your abs!). Cortisol also makes your metabolism slow down and increases your appetite. It ALSO leads to a tendency to consume high-fat foods. Ugh.

There are ways to avoid weight gain and unhealthy habits even when you’re scrambling to finish that paper at 4am the night before. What does a girl gotta do to stay healthy and avoid gaining weight during these super stressful times?

Build a support system.
Friends and family are there for you – feel free to vent! Unloading your stress and frustrations will keep you focused… and prevent you from stress-eating.

Snack smart.
Avoid sugar and caffeine. They’ll seem like a good choice… until you crash a few hours later! And when you’re making your 2am food run, keep healthy snacks closest (front of the cabinets and fridge) so that’s the first thing you see and grab. If you have time to cook, put food away right after you make it so you’re not mindlessly eating seconds and thirds while studying. Also, no matter what hours you keep during exam week, try to keep your eating schedule as close to normal as possible. Eating when you should be sleeping increase your chances of gaining weight. The Weekly Ten: Summertime Must-haves

Now doesn't that just look refreshing?

Maybe it’s just the 90 degree heat that‘s making me dizzy has me thinking summer, but June 21st is just around the corner and I’m already starting to load up on sundresses and break out the plaid shorts. In honor of the simply fantastic weather that the northeast graced me with this weekend, I’m counting down the 10 summer must-haves.

Don’t worry, you have a whole month and a half to get everything on the list! Read More »

Dealing with a Friend in an Unhealthy Relationship

One of the hardest parts of being a friend to someone is actually being a friend to someone.

It’s not like when we were little we were taught how to be a friend outside the realms of “sharing is caring.” There are certain sticky situations, like dealing with a friend in a bad or abusive relationship, where no how-to guide can instruct us how to be a true friend.

Standing by as a friend suffering through an unhealthy relationship can be confusing, frustrating, and often scary. How do you support a friend without doing them an injustice? And at what point do you draw the line between supporting and enabling?

One of my best friends is in a horrible relationship that resembles a really bad re-run episode of Degrassi. Read More »

The Morning After: The Early Bird Gets…Caught

Everyone’s got a morning after story and we wanna hear yours! Send it over to us and we’ll post it – anonymously, of course – right here!]

It was one of those nights where you just have a feeling, before even mixing that first pre-drink, that it’s really gonna suck. But I decided to accompany one of my roommates to our local bar anyway, just to get out of the room. When we finally arrived, my suspicions were confirmed: the crowd was the same and everything blew.

But then, I spotted a mystery boy.
Someone I hadn’t seen before.
Intrigue.

So I flipped my hair, sidled up to the bar, ordered a beer, “accidentally” smacked into him on my way back, one thing led to another, and we were walking back to my dorm.  I had found out through our conversations that he was visiting from an out of state school with a friend (that I knew but actively disliked) and as such, had no lodgings…except for that friend’s room.
