We’re Looking For The Ultimate Sorority Spokeswoman
August 10, 2010 Posted in Back to School, Cool Stuff

We have incredibly exciting news coming straight from the CollegeCandy headquarters. This just in: CollegeCandy is launching a brand new column this fall for sorority girls across the country. We’re looking for the ultimate sorority girl, a Greek life die-hard willing to dish out an honest perspective on sorority life.
She needs to have strong writing skills, a sense of humor, knowledge on all things Greek (from rush etiquette to theme parties), and an overall willingness to give advice to sorority girls (and soon-to-be sorority girls) from all over America.
Does this sound like a girl in your house? Does this sound like you?
In 300 words or less, tell us why YOU’D be the ultimate sorority girl for CollegeCandy and send it to sororitygirl@collegecandy.com by August 17th. The chosen girl not only gets a weekly column on a blog with over one million readers, she also gets to bring home up to 30 pairs of Greek flip flops for her house from www.GreekForMe.com, an online store chock full of the cutest sorority apparel and gifts ever.
Sounds like a win/win to us.
So what are you waiting for?
Tell us what you're thinking...

All NPC sororites have policies against talking to the media about anything, especially your sorority or Greek experience, so whomever gets this will be breaking the rules. Unless, of course, you choose someone from a local, non-national sorority, which is fine but definitely not a comparable to a NPC experience.

* comparable experience

They didn't say you had to reveal your affiliation, but in some cases, yes, it will break the rules of some sororities. But if they're looking for someone to give unbiased opinions, people to go to for this job are people who were recruitment counselors (Pi chi, rho chi, rho gamma). They had to disaffiliate from their sororities during recruitment and prep girls on what to expect without revealing to them what their affiliation was. Girls certainly tried to guess but no one knew for sure until the day it was revealed.
But if a girl could talk positively about greek life, with an unbiased opinion and not talk about the stereotypes and such, I feel like it would be a good read and put greek life in a positive light as opposed to the light given to it from shows like Greek. Not many people know that greeks do a lot of community service and raise money for their philanthropies. Those instead get overshadowed by things in the news about hazing and partying which while it does happen, is not true for all sororities because there will be hazing and partying in any organization (think sports and teams).

It would break the rules of all 26 NPC sororities. Not to mention that all chapter operations are supposed to be confidential. Someone thats would break the rules in order to write for a website is probably not the best representative for Greek life. I just think it's risky. It would be great if someone great did it like Shauna suggests, but the great memebers are not going to put their membership on the line to do it. There are bad members, girls who do fit the stereotypes and eventully get kicked out or get their whole sorority in trouble like what has happened in recent news events. Those are the girls care so little about their organization that they would put their membership in jeopardy for this, and they are not the girls I would want to represent Greek life on a popular website.

I think we should have a little more confidence in our sisters to properly represent Greek Life as a whole and not reveal our affiliations. Or get rotating Recruitment Counselors to do it as Rush proceeds across different Universities but that would require massive amounts of coordination.

I spoke to my Chapter's District advisor who says she doesn't know about any issues with it. Also, one of our national alumnae has a blog and many of the writers discuss sorority stuff, sometimes mentioning their affiliation so I can't see our national offices having a problem with it.

Uh, no one is asking to reveal deep sorority secrets. We're asking sorority girls to give advice on rush, to represent greek life and just write a column. There are no rules broken doing that (trust me – I was on panhel).

It is against the rules to discuss RITUALS of your sorority in more details than you would be able to disclose to anyone on your campus, or even a pledging sister. But although ritual is a huge meaningful part of being in a sorority, it's not what defines college life for a member of a sorority.

I think a college commuter student column would be more beneficial. I should write it

^agreed on the idea of a commuter student column- or maybe a community college one. Both are completely unrepresented on this site..
