The Morning After: The Upper Decker

morning-after

[Everyone’s got a morning after story (some are more traumatic than others) and we wanna hear yours! Send it over to us and we’ll post it – anonymously, of course – right here!]

When it came to house parties, my roommates and I pulled out all the stops. We wanted our soirees to stand out and be memorable so we always chose a theme. We threw a bat mitzvah party (homemade t-shirts and some chair lifts and all) for my non Jewish roommate’s 19th birthday. We had a costume parties. We had a Jell-o wrestling tournament. And when winter set in, we asked everyone to pull out their finest dresses and ties and come over for a cocktail party.

It was a classy affair with brie, wine and champagne.  Everyone looked fabulous as we mingled to the sounds of Frank Sinatra playing from my laptop.

As with most college parties, our friends brought their friends – people we didn’t know – but we welcomed them with open arms and strong vodka cocktails. Read More »

Intro to Cooking: Sweet, Spicy, and Savory Corn!

There are few culinary pleasures to match the first crunchy, buttery bite of a fresh ear of corn off the cob.  And with each rich mouthful, you’re taking in healthy doses of folate (to ward off heart disease, colon cancer and to prevent birth defects in the fetuses of pregnant women), thiamin (for better memory), and pantothenic acid (which eases energy production under stress).  So check out these three painfully simple recipes to shake up your serving of corn, with one each to satisfy any sweet, savory, or spicy craving you have!

Sweet: Rachael Ray’s Kettle Corn

Don’t settle for the overly-processed easy-pop bags when you can make your own without a hassle!

Ingredients

1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup popcorn kernels
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon coarse salt

Instructions

1. In a large pot with a tight-fitting lid, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the popcorn.
2. When the oils sizzles, sprinkle the sugar over the kernels. Cover and shake the pan until the popping slows down, about 3 minutes.
3. Remove from the heat and toss with the salt. Read More »

One Month Challenge: Facebook Diet, Week Two

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. This month we're following Ariel as she, GASP, quits Facebook. Last week, her body shut down (no, for real); how's she faring now??]

Two weeks without logging in to Facebook and I still have a pulse. This is a very, very, VERY good sign!

My second week Facebook-free has gone surprisingly well. I’ve even managed to convince a bunch of people to come along this journey with me. (Editor’s Note: Who ARE these people!?) It seems that I’m not the only one who has become emotionally and physically dependent on a website.

I feel your pain, fellow addicts. Let it all out. This is a judgment-free zone.

With classes starting back up in ten days (Is this real life?) and having to move back into my apartment in less than a week, I haven’t had a lot of time to sit down and sort through my email… let alone stalk friends-of-friends-of-friends. And I’ve barely missed it.

But maybe it’s because I’ve continued to fill this Faceboook-induced void with multiple pairs of shoes and tons of new outfits. (I’ve spent a lot of time at the gym too! I need to look good in these new clothes.) Isn’t that what always happens? People replace one addiction with another? Yeah, I’ve got a ridonk new wardrobe, but now there’s a void in both my wallet and my heart.

I’ll tackle budgeting my time and my money next month. Read More »

Make the Most of BFF Time Before School Starts

It’s August, which means it’s almost that time of year: back to school. But unlike when we were younger and dreaded the first day, going back to college is exciting, enough to provoke countdowns on Facebook statuses (“Only 236 hours more days until I’m back at school!”), and overall giddiness. You can’t wait to pack up your rooms and your closets and get right back into the college atmosphere – crazy bar nights and frat parties, Wine-Down Wednesdays and Tequila Tuesdays, dorm room gossip sesh’s with your roommates, attempting to wake up for class, and making even more memories with your friends.

However, amidst all that excitement, there’s one gray cloud looming: you’ll be leaving your best friends from home behind.

No matter how much fun we have with our school best friends, it always sucks to leave behind your home BFFs – the girls and guys you grew up with, who know all about the times you made a fool of yourself in 9th grade homeroom, and whom you can still go out with and have a good time. It especially sucks after a summer spent with them, when you’ve gotten used to seeing them on a daily basis, and you know that when school starts things will be different. Because let’s be honest: despite all of our best intentions to stay in touch with our BFFs during the academic year, it’s usually pretty tough. Between the parties and the actual work, it’s easy to start speaking only once a week or learning about one another’s lives through Newsfeed.

For those of you who are bummed about leaving behind your best girlfriends, don’t worry – you still have a few more weeks of summertime fun left, which means plenty of time to stock up on some serious BFF bonding sessions. So here is a list of things you should make time to do with your girls before you’re all back in school, back in the grind, and back to intermittent IMs. Read More »

Saturday Read: Eat Pray Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert

I’ve been seeing previews like crazy for Julia Roberts’ new movie, “Eat Pray Love” and it looks pretty cute. And since I have a standing rule that I must read the book before I watch the movie, I was forced into this week’s read. However, I’m so glad that I did!

“Eat Pray Love” is a non-fiction book written by Elizabeth Gilbert. Gilbert has found herself with the perfect American life: a gorgeous house, a good husband and a successful career. But, she is consistently unhappy and one day realizes that she just doesn’t want to be married anymore. This “perfect life” is just not for her. So she leaves her husband and after being inspired by three different countries and their cultures, she decides to spend a year traveling to Italy, India and Indonesia. She chooses Italy because she has always wanted to learn Italian, India because she has recently gotten into the yoga lifestyle and Indonesia because she traveled there once and was told by a medicine man that she would return. She uses the advance from this promised book to fund her whirlwind adventure and sets off.

This book was somewhat of a sensation. For a year, it felt like someone I knew was always reading this. So, of course, I resisted, as any good book snob does. I’m really happy that I picked it up though! Gilbert is a charming and hilarious narrator. She’s so open with her experiences and feelings, it seems like I’m reading a letter from an old friend. I constantly found myself smiling while reading this one, that is, when I wasn’t laughing at her quick wit. But, besides being entertaining, I also found this one quite inspiring. Read More »

Weekly Wrap Up: Oh August, It’s Getting Hot in Here

Wow, August has been a steamer.  And it makes me so lazy. I can’t do anything. And I’m not kidding. I could barely make the trek to my freezer this morning to have a struggle-fest opening the wrapper off of my fruit popsicle before I proceeded to the center of my family room, turned on the fan and spread out like a star fish on the ground.

You can only imagine, then, my internal fight to read the September Issue of Glamour. It’s over 400 pages, people. You try lifting that to your face.

Whew. I needed a moment to catch my breath just from typing that. Before I pass out in a pool of sweat and melted ice cream, let’s take a moment to turn on the A/C and reflect on the hot-ass week that was.

* As quickly as Mother Nature dragged in weather that makes me feel like I’m suffocating inside of a leopard print Snuggie, she’s going to drag the blanket from under us and bring on the lovely season of fall. That also means college (!) is beginning! Lucky for us, Ben Bator (creator of my number one guilty pleasure – TFLN) fills us in on the dos and donts of college.

* And if that’s not enough to get you through them college days, we’re here to help you with your new wardrobe options and all your roommate woes.

* Speaking of college, are you ready for the shopping spree(s….you know you always forget something) with your parental units at Bed Bath & Beyond? We are. And your parents may not know what they’re getting into… Read More »

Gossip Cheat Sheet: Even Lindsay’s Judge Has Had Enough

What’s going on this week? Apparently not much besides Eat Pray Love. At least that’s all I’m hearing about these days in Hollywood. I swear, if I see Julia Roberts sitting innocently on that bench suggestively eating her cup of fro yo one more time, I’m going to scream. Eat it like a woman, Roberts. Stop looking at the birds, OK? At first I really did want to grab my girls and sneak a tube of cookie dough into the theater for a little Eat Pray Love action. But now? I’d rather eat, eat, sleep.

Anyway, besides the cutesy movie about a women traveling the world to find herself (I personally don’t need to leave America and In & Out Burgers to find myself), what else is going on in Hollywood, you ask?  Well, Rachel Bilson recently went on a Costco shopping spree. (Welcome to singlehood, homegirl!) Aaaaand that’s about it. Read More »
