8 Under $20: Lovin’ The Lace

Ok, here’s the deal. While many people might disagree, I stand firm in my belief that lace should not be confined to the contents of your underwear drawer.  Although it looks to die for on a pair of panties, it also looks beloved with just about any outfit.  It’s romantic. It’s Grace Kelly. It’s classy. It’s classic.

And it’s under $20 dollars (at least on this URL).

So let’s get shopping, shall we? Read More »

The Post-Grad Journey: I Quit!

There comes a tipping point where you have to say “enough is enough,” and you either need to fix what is driving you to the edge or take a step back to realize what needs to be fixed. My tipping point just arrived and resulted in me saying: “I quit!”

So, you know those people I was playing nanny for? Besides the peach cobbler incident, things have been okay. In fact, the family hired me on as their accountant/bookkeeper – so I have been doing tax forms and working with thousands and thousands of receipts for the last few weeks. However, things started going south pretty fast once I started playing the role of babysitter and bookkeeper!

There were tons of demands. It was like once they had me around all the time, they would do anything to keep me there. For example, I would give the family my schedule and they would be mad because I had LSAT class or a few hours out of the day blocked off to study – things they knew when they hired me from the start. They started wanting me to nanny and do bookkeeping work at the same time – but they only wanted to pay me for bookkeeping, despite me watching their young children. Then it turned into almost full-time hours, when I only want to work part-time. And, the worst part was when the pay became sporadic. As I write this, I still need to be paid for nearly a $100 worth of work. Do I think I’ll see the money? No, but at least I’ll have my sanity back. Read More »

Tuffy Luv Talks Birth Control

Question for La Tuff? Answers may be available at TuffyLuv@collegecandy.com. While supplies last. Void where prohibited.

Dear Tuffy Luv,

My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost five months, and until recently, it has been amazing.  About a month and a half ago I began taking the pill – Loestrin 24 Fe – out of necessity.  The condom broke a few times and I had to take Plan B.  At first I was pleased with it.  My skin’s clearer, my hair (which had thinned in recent years) is thicker, and I haven’t had any weight gain.  There’s only one side effect.  But it’s a BIG one. I’ve been an emotional wreck. I’m crying on and off frequently and not am as talkative/friendly/outgoing.  In general, just not myself.

I know my boyfriend (and also my bff/roommate) sees a big difference and it’s definitely put a strain on things.  I get unreasonably upset if we have to cancel plans or can’t hang out.  I’ll get teary during a phone conversation and have no explanation for what’s wrong.  We used to have so much fun together but my change in personality has put a damper on things most of the time.  I’ve tried explaining my situation, and I know he tries to be understanding, but he just doesn’t know how to deal with me.  I don’t know what to do anymore.  Should I forgo the pill and go back to condoms or wait it out and see if the side effects subside?  I can’t imagine another pill having the same positive effects and no negative side effects.  Any advice is much appreciated, as the clock’s a-ticking and I don’t know how much longer he’ll be willing to put up with my shenanigans.

Please Help!!

Happy Lazy Day! Let’s Nap

I’m elated to announce that today, August 10th, is National Lazy Day.  Seriously, this is a recognized day of do-nothing.  Go out and get batteries for your remote, set up a cooler right next to the sofa, find the comfiest clothes possible – you’re going to be doing a minimal amount of moving.  In honor of the only holiday better than Christmas, I bring you the ultimate Lazy Day schedule:

Noon: Wake up, but don’t get out of bed.  Reach over to your night table and grab your laptop.  Of course you left it there last night; the desk is way on the other side of your room.  Fall back asleep before you even log onto Facebook.

1:00: Wake up for real this time.  Pick your laptop up from the floor since it probably slid off your comforter.  Do all the requisite email checking, Facebooking, Tweeting, and stalking.

1:45ish: Get out of bed and put clothes on.  Wait, pause.  Did I just tell you to put clothes on?  Shame on me, this is Lazy Day.  Put on fake clothes; you know, the kind with stretchy waists and baggy arms. Read More »

Glamour Says The Darndest Things: September Edition

Ok, wow – the September issue of Glamour is so thick and heavy I want to beat Spencer Pratt over the head with it whenever he tries to find enlightenment and become a better person by wearing tie-dye and rubbing his face with crystals.  It’s stock full of over 400 (!!) pages and it’s the biggest issue in 20 years.

That’s a lot room for ad space fabulous articles, Glamour. This is good!  Just another reason to love September.

Well, first of all – this issue was tantalizingly fabulous.  Honestly, after flipping through 89 pages of ads, I read it cover to cover in about 2 hours – the way you read a magazine when you have a lot of time on your hands and you want to sink everything all in (reading the copy of the ads and the editor’s note).  September’s Glamour featured a lengthy spread with Justin Bieber awkwardly hanging out in an arcade with a (significantly older) female model.  However, J-Lo spiced up the pages with a totally hot photo shoot wearing leopard print, writing on mirrors with lipstick, and eating Chinese take-out decked out in stilettos and cat woman glasses. Standard.

Other articles told me what my headaches really mean, how to perfect a beautoumous blow-out, a fab article about perfecting the ‘classic look’ with Tommy Hilfiger, and the ever-so-helpful ‘Girl’s Guide to Appetizers,’ which made me curse everything I’ve lived for since I’ve thought quesadillas were the healthy choice.  At 1,000 calories a pop, Glamour claimed otherwise. For some reason I just received the same feeling in the pit of my stomach as I did when my mother told me Santa Clause wasn’t real.

Anywho, within in the depths of the juicy pages of Glamour this month (I seriously had such a such a good time reading this issue that I brought it with me to the bathroom….twice. Stupid quesadillas…), a particular article made me stop my heavy page scanning in my tracks. Entitled ‘Six Ways to Rule the World,’ I, an ambitious yet unemployed recent grad, was ready for some inspiration. Read More »

The Bachelor Pad: And So It Begins

Let me start by saying, The Bachelor Pad is my new favorite show on television.  If you watched the premiere last night, you know what I’m talking about.  It’s like The Bachelor on steroids – more drama, more hook-ups, more booze…basically amazing.

I was barely absorbing one of Elizabeth’s crazy threats before she was off and dishing out another.  My eyes couldn’t get enough of Jesse B.’s gorgeous bod.  Was Weatherman actually funny on a few occasions!?  I love it all!

While I’m still processing most of the finer plot points (and accepting Chris Harrison’s new casual attire), I’ve selected my favorite, most anticipated duos of the season:

Kiptyn and Tenley
We already know it’s going to happen, but come on – are they not the most family friendly couple of all time?  He’s a serial volunteer and she’s a real-life, rainbow-sh*tting Disney character.  I’m dying to see if these two progress beyond G-Rated hand holding.

Weatherman and Craig
Will these two ever kiss and make up?  Craig pretty much proved that he’s even more insecure and awkward than his cumulus cloud-loving counterpart.  Something makes me think that Weatherman is going into this show having an upper hand with the ladies.  Maybe he’ll finally get his first kiss!

Craig and Elizabeth
Elizabeth just wants Craig to guard and protect her heart win her over.  I’m placing my bet right now for the most over-used phrase of the season.  So long as Crazy Elizabeth and Craig are both on the show, she’ll be begging him to win her sorry butt over.  She’s a total nutcase! Read More »

My Life As….A Student Activist

While every college girl shares many of the same college experiences (selling books, sexiled, one shot too many), she also carves her own path and has her own unique adventure. Have you ever wondered what it’s like for other girls? What it’s like to be an engineer? To get married?! To play an NCAA sport? Well wonder no more. Our one-of-a-kind CollegeCandy writers (and readers!) are sharing their unique experiences and opening our eyes to different college worlds.

When you hear the word “environmentalist” or “activist” you probably get a picture of a dreadlocked, smelly tree hugger known for smoking marijuana, refusing to wear shoes and eating vegan.  However, in this day and age, many students across the country would consider themselves environmentalists and are engaged in political and environmental activism at the campus, local, national, and international level.   These students are not always hippies who won’t eat meat or refuse to shower.  In fact, most of them are normal, everyday students who just happen to have a passion for creating social change and empowering people.

I know this because I am one of them.

Climate change, the environment, and sustainability used to be fringe political issues that only the super liberal groups in society cared about.  While some people started organic farming (in both cities and rural areas) and using drying racks instead of electric dryers, the majority of the American population continued to move to the suburbs, buy more cars, and increase their energy consumption.  This created a country with the highest per capita carbon footprint in the world.  In the meantime, scientists, scholars, and politicians were beginning to take notice of global climate change and the Millenial Generation was busy waking up and getting engaged.  And it has forever impacted both the contemporary American university and its students. Internship Diaries: The End

When I first started this internship, I had high expectations. I knew that it would be different than the other internship I had; I could tell from the interview alone that this one would be a little bit more exciting, a little bit more hands-on, and was definitely about a subject matter that I enjoy. And I have to say, I was pretty much right.

I think that my experience has been exactly what an interning experience should be: there have been highs and lows, exciting moments of feeling like an actual journalist and those back-to-earth moments of feeling like the lowest person on the office food-chain. There have been frustrating moments when I’ve felt like I just want to walk out and never come back (like a 12-hour day where there was absolutely NOTHING to do), and there have also been moments where I wouldn’t give up the job for the world (like when I got to interview Derek Jeter). I’ve had to deal with some rude people, but I’ve also gotten the chance to meet some really amazing people. And probably the best thing was seeing my name in a national publication several times, and knowing that my hard work in school was finally starting to pay off a little. Read More »

August Madness: I Love the ’90s, Round 2

Voting is closed for round 2. Check out round 3 to sound off on your favorites from the ’90s!

It might be 2010, but here at CollegeCandy we’re still stuck in the ’90s. All you have to do is say Chumbawhumba and we’re off and running on a ’90s nostalgia debate that lasts the entire day. We know we’re not the only people out there that still rock out to N’Sync and still remember the desperation you felt when you lost your favorite Pogs slammer. So instead of constantly arguing amongst the CollegeCandy team, we decided to throw the question out to our readers and choose, once and for all, what is the best thing to come from the ’90s (besides our many devoted readers, of course).

So, in the fashion of every guy’s wet dream, March Madness, we’ve created an “I Love the ’90s” bracket. Thursday we left it up to you to vote on the best recreational things and events from our favorite decade. While we weren’t surprised to see Pogs beat out Devil Sticks, we were mouths-on-the-floor shocked to see Monica Lewinsky beat O.J Simpson by a landslide. Guess presidential sex (or whatever Bill called it) outweighs murder these days.

But that’s the whole reason we’re doing this (sorry, Titanic!) and we’re excited to narrow it down even further today. On this momentous Monday, we’re looking at top 32 choices from all 4 sections. Will AOL Chatrooms beat out Super Nintendo? ‘Can Salute Your Shorts’ possibly win out over TGIF? (Things to consider: Donkey Lips vs. Uncle Joey.) We won’t know until you cast your vote.

So vote now and then come back every Monday and Thursday this month so you can keep letting us know what is the best thing to ever come from the 1990 and beyond. Read More »
