10 Places to See As a College Student [GALLERY]
September 27, 2010 Posted in College, Cool Stuff, Galleries, Reality

The Huffington Post recently published a list of 10 places every child must visit. On the list: The Smithsonian, Yellowstone and Ellis Island. I remember when I was a kid and my parents somehow found it in their souls to take to all of those places. We were a big traveling family and my parents wanted me to see (and learn about) everything. Unfortunately, instead of taking in the beauty of the Grand Canyon, I sat in the dirt and cleaned up my Tamogotchi’s poop.
In a nutshell: I didn’t let it all sink in, learn something or enjoy it.
And I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.
However, now that we’re all grown up in college, we are presented with the perfect opportunity (and maturity) to do some exploring and really experience some cool things. Some of these things we couldn’t appreciate entirely when we were little munchkins not old enough to play beer pong at a real, living, breathing frat party. And some of these things we won’t be able to appreciate to the same extent when we’re out of college.
So while our minds are human sponges and we’ve got loads of time, it’s time to explore the top ten places every college student must see.

As someone lucky enough to go school in New Orleans (yeahhh Tulane!) I can say that this city definitely deserves some exploring. It's such an amazing clash of cultures, socioeconomic classes, and amazing people you'll feel like you're traveling the globe in a single streetcar ride.
Plus, there are a pleathora of 24 hour restaurants for late night munching after bar hopping (because it's only 18 to get into them and no open container laws!).

@Matt – You sound surprised/annoyed? Have you been to a college recently?

Must be nice to have money…
I'll take you up on that bet, by the way. Not only did we NOT go to DC in middle school, we didn't take any field trips after 6th grade, when we went a couple hours away to Six Flags, the biggest and fanciest field trip we ever took. Before that were science centers, zoos, concerts, and plays, all within a couple hours (mostly about an hour).
Why would we have gone over 6 hours away for a school trip? I mean, I know my grandma's senior trip was to DC, which was like 9 hours away, but that was also a few decades ago, and they were seniors.
Also…I question your statement about Nascar being the biggest spectator sport. You've heard of football, right? Look, I live in the absolute middle of nowhere, which means there's a very high number of Nascar fans, and you know what? I still know only slightly more people who watch Nascar than who DON'T watch football. Seeing as how the Super Bowl is the most watched TV slot of the year, I'm betting football is a lot more popular than…Nascar…ugh.

Oh, and I would also like to point out that just because there are free things to do in DC doesn't mean you have no reason not to go. You still have to pay for transportation and a hotel, and you're looking at a good $100-300 a night for the hotel. Plus, even from here, that's around $100 worth of gas…and some people live on the opposite side of the country. I don't have $300 to drive down and spend a weekend there, even if I get to do a ton of free stuff once I'm there. Sorry.

Frat party? Really? Only thing I got out of going to those were ruined shoes from the beer-soaked floor. Yeah, it's cool to go to one or two, but not something I'd put on a "place to see" list. Pretty trashy.

umm maybe you just shouldn't go to DC then Leigha. Or read any articles since you feel so strongly about not being able to do one of the things mentioned in it. i'm sorry the author didn't take your specific location and economic circumstances into accout before writing this. there are other things on the list you could do (visit another college, frat party, american monument).

The only thing I agree with is political rally(went to obama rally at NYU before he became president) and traveling outside the country. I managed not to drink while in college. doesn't appeal to me. I go to university in hawaii so if you do choose to go to school in hawaii I suggest checking out the other islands during spring or winter break IF you have money left over from financial aid(haha).

Leigha, Maybe you should chill out! She wasn't saying that everyone could afford to go, or that your life would somehow be ruined if you didn't have the money to go to DC. She's merely saying that going is a good thing to do now that you can actually appreciate everything you're seeing. Also a lot of schools DO go to DC for a field trip. I know every school in my area goes even though it's half way across the country and we have to take a plane. Furthermore, Nascar is the biggest spectator sport in the county. Maybe you should try looking things up before you call other people liars.
I liked most of these! Although many people may bash Frat parties, I think it's definitely something that should be on the list. It's not something you can ever do again in your life, so you might as well do it at least once. Even if you don't have fun, (which you should be able to make it fun if you have the right attitude) you can say you tried it instead of never really knowing what it's like… and Vegas definitely is the Disney world for our age group. My best friends and I have gone a few times and every time is better than the last. Wait until you're 21 though.
