Intro to Cooking: Cantaloupe Crepes

Though Labor Day has come and gone, it’s still officially summer until the autumn equinox on September 22. Or, if you measure seasons as I do, until summer produce is no longer ripe. There’s still time to fill up on fruit, as the peak time for melons usually lasts through September. And this summer has been a hot one—especially on the east coast—above-average temps mean greater and longer-lasting crops of cantaloupe.

I know what you’re thinking—cantaloupe? Those pale-orange cubes that stuff the bottom of caf fruit cups (when all you really want are more strawberries)? Hey, just because it’s been used as filler for exotic fruits doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its own merits! Cantaloupe is extremely cheap and one cup contains just 66 calories, so it’s easy to fill up without blowing your diet. Cut fruit can keep for up to a week, and sustainable living enthusiasts will appreciate that the United States is one of the major producers of cantaloupe. Read More »

CC Beauty Live: Puffy Eyes No More

Between on-campus jobs, late nights at the library and  even later nights at the bar, the college lifestyle can take a toll on our bodies. And, even worse, it can take a major toll on our under-eyes. I don’t know one college lady who hasn’t suffered from you-look-like-you-got-punched-in-the-eye syndrome at one point or another. And it ain’t pretty.

Fortunately, there’s a solution….and it doesn’t involve cold spoons (which can be too harsh for your peepers, not to mention make you look totally ridiculous when you’re lying on your bed with two spoons on your face). I tested out  Eye Candy Coolers, small rounds that promise to reduce puffiness and give you a moment of relaxation, and I think you’ll love them!

One Month Challenge: Junk Food Free, Week 2

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. Last month we followed Ariel as she went a(n almost) full month sans Facebook. This month Meredith is giving up junk food. Yes, really. Her first week was good. Great, even. This week, though, life sorta got in her way....]

I had a vision in my head for how this month would go. I would give up junk food, be healthier, maybe slip up once or twice, but succeed overall. I would end the month being skinny, beautiful, and confident. My life situation would remain the same; it would be ME that changed.

I made a very big lapse in judgment. As Knocked Up taught us, “life doesn’t care about your plans.”

My boyfriend and I broke up Saturday night. I WOULD publicize all of the fun details, but Destiny’s Child put it best when they said, “You know I’m not gonna diss you on the Internet, cause my momma told me better than that.” Now, before you start to pity me, don’t. I am much happier and I have so many amazing people around me constantly. I adore being single again (some think maybe even too much…).

But I do have a confession. My friend and I ate some ice cream on Saturday night. The truth is that it didn’t make anything better, obviously. We ended up walking four miles that night on our quest for lots of fresh air, which, in my opinion, cancels out the ice cream. Judge for yourself. I immediately was junk-food-free again on Sunday. Forget Perez Hilton – Here Are 8 Celebrity Blogs to Read Instead

I’ve always been an extremely loyal fan to Perez Hilton.  I’ve spent countess hours throughout my college years scrolling through the hot pink pages and indulging in all of the juicy celeb gossip he has to offer. Perez’s page is easy to read, catches you up real fast, and provides lots of juicy pictures of Zac Efron.  However, one downfall – Perez is horrible to basically everyone that is a human being and although his snappy rants are part of the appeal to Perezhilton.com, I’m getting a little tired of it.

Lucky for all of us who love reading juicy gossip about celebrities, the internet has so many more places to offer that dish on the celebrities we love to mock, and we have eight of the best right here.

PopEater: PopEater is an exclusive site for go-to celeb interviews and news.  All of the articles are full of exclusive facts, up-to-date pictures and PopEater even has that scroll-thru quick read atmosphere (much like Perez).

Crushable: Crushable is great because along with celebrity news, they also offer style and relationship tips (the stuff I really care about). With the same layout style as Jezebel, Crushable offers a variety of advice, news and an easy go-to hot topics tab.  Like Perez, Crushable has a carefree HAHA attitude, offering silly articles and videos all over their site.

Now Showing: Going the Distance

[Ladies, meet Meredith, the newest addition to the CollegeCandy team. She's a BU student, a movie buff, and an all around fantastic chicadee. She'll be our resident movie gal, giving us the ins and outs of the new releases and telling us whether or not its worth it to fork over $12 for the latest flicks.]

It has been six days since my boyfriend and I broke up. So obviously the best thing to do was watch a romantic “comedy” (I’ll explain the quotation marks in a minute). What I didn’t realize is that even a movie about falling in love could explain so much about an ended relationship.

Going the Distance is essentially Knocked Up minus the baby and the funny. Oh, and plus about 3,000 miles. Erin (Drew Barrymore) is a reporter on an internship who meets Garrett (Justin Long) six weeks before she has to return to her hometown of San Francisco. Garrett works for a record label where he is unable to give the bands he loves any big breaks. I know, a news office and a record label – now there are two places that we don’t see enough of in films today. Neither Erin nor Garrett really like the way their life is going and they make each other laugh, so naturally, they fall in love and commit to be long distance.

The mastermind behind this film clearly thought that because Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Christina Applegate are funny in other movies and TV shows, they would be able to somehow make the dialogue infinitely more hysterical than it actually was on paper. When they realized that wasn’t working, I guess they just decided that Judd Apatow is pretty popular, so why not have three goofy looking friends talk about masturbation while two blonde sisters (the older, anal-retentive one with a crazy family that she can’t handle and the younger one falling in love) talk about how stupid men are. Gossip Cheat Sheet: Snooki Gets a Beatdown

It looks like Hollywood’s finest may have cleaned it up for the time being. Well, except for Lindsay Lohan hitting a stroller with her car. But for the most part, our favorite celebs have taken our advice from last week and gotten it together! Kind of. We wouldn’t have gossip if they weren’t all up to something sneaky.

Kind of a big deal

1. LFO’s Rich Cronin passed away this week at the age of 35. LFO was best known for their hit “Summer Girls” back in 1995. Rich was diagnosed with leukemia in 2005 and has been battling ever since. He reportedly had a stroke and didn’t recover. So sad, our thoughts are with his friends and family.

2. Britney Spears is getting sued for sexual harassment! By her former bodyguard! Scandalous. Fernando Flores claims that Britney exposed her britney to Flores several times and called him into her bedroom while she was naked. Flores also made a claim that Britney was inappropriate around her kids and borrowed his belt to discipline them. This could get ugly.

Single. And Confused.

I honestly don’t think that I will ever understand boys.

Okay so, remember that awesome boy who I contemplated asking out? Well, let’s face it, I had pretty much given up on him. I hadn’t run into him around campus, and I’ve been so busy with the craziness of school starting that I hadn’t even thought of him for a few weeks.

Well, as it always seems to happen, I had completely forgotten about him when I ran into him in our student union yesterday. I was just leaving an afternoon meeting and being filled in on my sorority’s most recent drama, when he was trying to get my attention.

“Hey, hey, Emmy!”
