We’ve All Been There: Ready To Get Back to School

student taking notes

It’s the start of a new school year and to honor that, we at CollegeCandy are bringing back our favorite series, “We’ve All Been There.” Every week, Lauren – University of Michigan will comment on the common experiences all college women share, like the dreaded move-in day, including some new ones thrown into the mix.

You’ve spent the last 3 nights enjoying the free booze freedom that Welcome Week allows, but as you wake up with the garbage can next to your bed – again – you realize it might be time to buckle down. Classes are looming ever closer and not only can your body not handle another 12-hour hangover, you’ve got a lot of stuff to prepare before those 18 credits take over your life.

So while your friends watch another SATC marathon/discuss what they’re going to wear to the night’s festivities, you grab your schedule and head out for something a little more….fun: school supplies shopping (!!).

Most people wouldn’t find this particular type of shopping exciting, but back-to-school shopping has been the highlight of your Augusts since you were 6 years old. The smell of fresh books, the feel of a new (medium point) pen as it runs across the pages of a fresh, crisp college-ruled notebook. The richness of a new, juicy highlighter. You can’t wait to get it all home and organized for the first day of classes. Read More »

12 Reasons You Can (and Should) Wear White After Labor Day

There are some fashion rules you should follow.

Never show your legs and your cleavage at the same time? That’s a good one.
No denim on denim? Also a keeper.

Then, there are those rules that should just be ignored. Your purse doesn’t always have to match your shoes. You can mix prints. And most importantly you can wear white after Labor Day.

Of all the rules put forth by the fashion police, this one has always baffled me the most. Why is white only acceptable between Memorial Day and Labor Day? Why is it that this one color has such a limited lifespan, only to be paired with bikinis and boy shorts? From the plain white t-shirt, to the classic white button down, to winter white pieces, the color white is essential to every wardrobe, all year long. Below are some pieces that will make you want to wear white every day. Read More »

Labor Day Link-A-Palooza

We know. It’s a three-day weekend and you have yet to get out of your pajamas. Heck, you have yet to even get out of bed. That’s cool with us. That’s why sweats were invented. And actually, if we had our way, you wouldn’t get out of bed all day. Because it makes us feel better knowing we’re not the only sloths around we have an insanely awesome round-up of links from our very favorite people on the web.

Yeah that’s right. We’re giving you another excuse to stay in elastic-waistband pants all day. You’re welcome.

The Last Fro Yo of Summer

It’s Labor Day which means two things:

1. The perfect excuse to wash down a burger with an ice cold beer.
2. Summer is officially over.

I could use this space to share BBQ survival tips with you, but somehow that just doesn’t sit well with me. It’s a holiday; whether we’re enjoying the day with family or a bunch of frat guys with a grill, we should enjoy ourselves.

I’ve dished on all sorts of stuff this summer: my radical lifestyle change, what it’s like to be unhealthy, and even a few tips on how to stay healthy. But there’s one big topic I missed: how to stay happy. And with summer just about to fade away, I am sure us ladies can use all the happy we can get.

Let me briefly compare how I spent last summer to how I spent this summer: Read More »

The Weekly Ten: The Jobs That Deserve This Labor Day

san_marcos_janitor

Take a break, dude. You deserve it!

Part of the reason I write a Weekly Ten is because I’m paying homage to my man David Letterman (seriously, my dad hasn’t ever missed an episode), and partly it’s because I like lists. Particularly lists where I can prattle on about whatever issue I feel is super relevant. Ya know, like how I’m just not that into you or being super fabulously sober.

This week I’ve decided to list the 10 jobs that totally deserve to sleep in past noon on this very special Labor Day. Why is it even called Labor Day? Shouldn’t it be Not-Labor Day? But I digress. Some people deserve a break for all they do/deal with on a daily basis. I don’t have the power to give it to them, but maybe they’ll note my appreciation and hook me up in the future.

So here are the people both on and off campus that totally deserve the holiday and our respect on this last official day of summer. Read More »

8 Reasons I’m Happy Summer is Over

I spent all my cold winter nights dreaming of beaches and sunshine and the perfectly bronzed skin I’d have come the end of summer.

Then summer came and I was happy (minus a few sunburns and one month-long humidity frizzfest). Then summer came even harder — 95 degrees harder — and as the sweat pooled in that little fold behind my knees I knew it: I was ready for fall. I began to yearn for loosely draped scarves around my neck, crunchy leaves under my leather boots and pumpkin spice EVERYTHING.

While “end of summer” might sound depressing if you’re forty with a real job or 17 with another year of high school coming at ya, fall for the CollegeCandy girl is fa-fa-fabulous. And here are 8 reasons why. Read More »

The Morning After: The Bedroom Treasure Hunt

[Everyone’s got a morning after story (but most don't involve parental units) and we wanna hear yours! Send it over to us and we’ll post it – anonymously, of course – right here!]

I saw him at my first sorority mixer. He was the social chair of his fraternity and from the moment he checked my name on the guest list, I was in love. He looked dreamy in his designer jeans and flip flops, his hair perfectly floppy. And he knew my name. Well, at least for that moment.

I spent a year cyber-stalking him, convincing my sorority to plan more events with his house and then pussying out whenever I had the opportunity to talk to him. He was older, wiser, and definitely a highly sought after guy campus wide; there was no way he’d ever notice me.

And then, like a gift from heaven, we ended up in a summer term class together.

The class was small, only 30 people. When I walked in the first day (looking like a hot, sweaty mess thanks to my crappy house’s lack of A/C) and spotted him, I could barely contain my excitement. Finally! An excuse to talk to my knight in khaki cargo shorted armor. If only I didn’t have pit stains… Read More »

Intro to Cooking: Grilled Shrimp Marinade

Sometimes all you need to spruce up a dull salad or your run-of-the-mill Wednesday dinner is an ingredient swap. If chicken caesar has lost its bite, and you simply can’t look at another plate of turkey and veggies without yawning, say hello to my leetle friend (sorry, had to!): shrimp!

Did you know these bite-sized crustaceans have virtually no fat and are very low in calories, AND are a tremendous source of protein? Just one 3 oz serving carries 84 calories, 1g of fat and 18g of protein! They’re also rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for you, and cholesterol, which is not. That same serving will give you more than half of your daily recommended intake of cholesterol, so don’t go overboard!

Easy Swap-out Suggestions:

1. Ditch turkey and cobb salads for shrimp in a salad with mesclun greens, sugar snap peas, avocado, and a drizzle of lemon vinaigrette. Deeelish.
2. Sick of carrots and hummus? Boil shrimp and serve with cocktail sauce as a quick snack instead.
3. Kick up your pasta dish by switching chicken for sauteed shrimp in tomato sauce for drizzling over your fettuccine.

This Week’s Recipe: Grilled Shrimp Marinade

I tried this recipe with frozen shrimp from the grocery store–they’re easy to keep on hand for a meal in a pinch, and this marinade is essentially foolproof…and a great way to impress the roommates.

Ingredients:

2 pounds jumbo shrimp
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 to 3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 bunch green onions, with a few inches of green, thinly sliced
1/4 cup chopped parsley
3 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups (dry) brown rice, cooked
1 bag spinach, steamed

Instructions

1. Place shrimp in a glass bowl. Stir remaining ingredients together; pour over shrimp. Cover and marinate for 3 to 4 hours.
2. Grill on the stove for about 5 to 7 minutes, turning halfway through the cooking time. Serve over brown rice, with a side of steamed spinach. Serves 4-6.

CC Beauty Live: French Side Braid

Braids have taken a turn from that hip, surfer girl look to a sophisticated, romantic style. And everybody’s wearing them. There are so many fun things to do with braids, like the small side braid into a ponytail, the braided bun, the two braids as a headband, and more.

Those are all well and good (and a great way to deal with that messy hair when you’re running 15 minutes late to class in the morning), but once I saw this French side braid, they all paled in comparison. I’m in LOVE. (In fact, I’m longing for lengthy locks so my own side braid will look better!)

This braid is just as simple as the rest, but the placement is a little different. So watch the vid and find out how it’s done!

One Month Challenge: Junk Food Free, Week 1

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. Last month we followed Ariel as she went a(n almost) full month sans Facebook. This month things are getting even crazier. Yes, Meredith is giving. up. junk food. Oy.]

I will be the first to admit that I put on some unwanted pounds this summer. Towards the end of August, I was having some boyfriend troubles and was coping with the fact that my dad was getting married in about a month. Because of this, I ate. To name a few favorite treats that I indulged in, I ate funfetti cake, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, fruit snacks, Cape Cod potato chips, Starbursts, Chili’s Chocolate Molton Lava Cake, and many other delicious things.

And it was good.
But no more. For the month of September, I am GIVING UP JUNK FOOD.

I Googled “junk food” just to see what I’m dealing with and the first definition that came up was, “food that tastes good but is high in calories having little nutritional value.” I’m going to stick to that for my definition. No more cake, ice cream, cookies, gummies, chips, pizza, cheeseburgers, frappuccinos…basically anything that contains empty calories. The idea is to do more than merely give up junk food, though; it’s to adopt a generally healthier lifestyle. I’m going to try to introduce more whole grains into my diet, drink more water rather than Coke Zero (one of my many horrible addictions), and work out more. Basically, I’m going to take every aspect of my life, then ask, “Would my hero, Jillian Michaels, approve?” God, I love her. Read More »
