One Month Challenge: Gone Meatless, Week 2

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. This month, Emmy's going 31 days without beef. Or chicken. Or turkey. Or....you get the idea.]

So, I’ve successfully made it through my first week without meat… and it hasn’t been too bad!

I’ve really liked that not eating things with meat has really forced me to try different foods and eat a more balanced diet, which is exactly what I was hoping would happen through this experiment. I’ve discovered that my school’s market actually has AMAZING hummus and vegetable plates that I’d never tried before. Like really, I don’t know what they put in the hummus, but it is madly addicting! I’ve also found a great vegetarian pad thai, a yummy Mediterranean veggie salad, and an amazing pesto tortellini all in just one of the campus markets! Who knew veggies could taste so good?

But I’m not taking any of this for granted. I’m lucky that my university offers so many Vegan/Vegetarian options and I know that not every school is quite as accommodating. If I had to exist on salads and plain noodles all month, I think I’d go crazy. Thank god I’ve got a variety of interesting and tasty options to choose from. Read More »

Why Every Student Should Be On Twitter

We’ve all been there: repeatedly refreshing our Facebook news feed and being disappointed when there is just nothing new and interesting being published from our own social network. Every new article on College Candy, YourTango, Lemondrop, PopEater and College Fashion has already been thoroughly read.  You’re bored. But you wouldn’t be if you had Twitter.

In case you aren’t one of the 190 million users already flying around the Twitterverse, you have been missing out. For some reason, this simple social media platform offers so much than any other does – all within 140 characters! And if you follow the right people, your feed will never be hungry for more again.

Now Showing: The Social Network

[Ladies, meet Meredith, the newest addition to the CollegeCandy team. She's a BU student, a movie buff, and an all around fantastic chicadee. She'll be our resident movie gal, giving us the ins and outs of the new releases and telling us whether or not its worth it to fork over $12 for the latest flicks.]

The Social Network isn’t “The Facebook movie,” as I have heard some people call it. The movie poster itself says, “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.” This is a film about power struggles, honesty, and the impact of one student’s claim to fame.

It is also one of the only films that I have seen that really understand college life.

So, there’s this little website called Facebook. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but about 700 of your “friends” definitely have. A young Harvard student by the name of Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, founded this gazillion dollar website.

The Social Network asks how much of Facebook DID Mark Zuckerberg actually invent compared to how much is “borrowed” ideas from his classmates. The film focuses on two mediated interviews in particular: Winklevoss twins and Eduardo Saverin. The film alleges that after being dumped by his girlfriend, Mark makes a website that allows its users to determine which Harvard girl is hotter. The website gains the attention of the privileged Winkelvoss twins, who enlist Zuckerberg to help them with their idea to connect Harvard students through a website. Rather than being an ideal business partner, Mark co-founds Facebook with Eduardo (who will eventually be suing Mark). We then watch Zuckerberg rise to fame in the midst of all this.

Oh yeah, and then there’s Justin Timberlake, impressively portraying the co-founder of Napster, who starts to have his own impact on the company. Read More »

From CollegeFashion: Wear 3 Fall Trends for Less

The following is a guest post from our gal pals at CollegeFashion.net. Have you checked them out yet?!

Step outside and you’ll discover the air is a little crisper, leaves are starting to darken into rustic colors, and the smell of autumn wafts through campus. It’s officially fall. You know what that means: now’s the time to start updating your wardrobe.

The latest trends for fall 2010 range from ’50s chic to elegant velvet, but perhaps the hottest trends are all about the balance between sweet and sassy: mixing ladylike lace with tough leather, infusing infantry inspiration, and daring to wear bold animal print. Weekly Wrap Up: Is It Halloween Yet?

Please tell me I’m not the only one waiting for LiLo’s next crazy move!  This week found me missing our drug-addled girl like whoa, especially since I wanted to be a Loca Lohan hot mess for Halloween.  Can we please go back to happier times when she was posing with knives alongside Vanessa Minnillo?

In the meantime, my search for the perfect costume is greatly aided by all the fabulous “sexy” don’ts we’re getting from you, our lovely readers. Gossip Cheat Sheet: Always Something Happening

Last week was kind of dull, and this week isn’t much better I’m sorry to say. Personally, I was okay with another quiet week since it’s midterm time, and I got the chance to keep up with my studies and happy hour specials. Knowing those crazy celebrities, the shizz will all hit the fan next week at the same time.

1. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s brother, “Burning Dan” Gordon-Levitt, passed away this week at the age of 36. He taught what is known as flow arts, which is a combination of dance, yoga, meditation, and preforming arts. Dan even started a school in Los Angeles for flow arts. The cause of death is still not known. This is so sad and our thoughts are with his friends and family.

Weekend Getaway: Minneapolis

Fall semester is in full swing and it’s starting to feel like you’re doing the same thing every week. Class. Study. Drink. Hangover. Poor Theme Party Costume Choice. Homework. Switch things up by taking advantage of a long weekend or your fall break (if you’re that lucky) by checking out our Weekend Getaway guides.   We’ve already covered Boston, Toronto , Austin and Savannah. Now, let’s hit up the midwest!

In a non-resident biased opinion, the city of Minneapolis is a diamond in the rough of cornfields and lots of suburbs we know as Minnes-ooooah-ta (yes, the accent exists). But contrary to popular belief, not everyone eats lutefisk and lefsa for dinner and it is only a desolate tundra for four months of the year.

In reality, Minneapolis is a rich destination filled with over 10,000 lakes, 22 regional trails, 330 metro parks, rich cultural amenities, 90,000 miles of shoreline (that’s more than California and Hawaii combined), world-inspired fare and fabulous boutiques.

Why is Minneapolis a perfect destination for fall break? Besides the beautiful assessment of changing leaves, farm-fresh ingredients and no sales tax on any apparel, Minneapolis is a rich city for creative force, entertainment and trendy shops and bars.  Oh, and we have hot dudes on our baseball team like this. Meow.

So tighten up your overalls and let’s start exploring. OK, I’m kidding. Keep your jeggings on and let’s play.

Facebook Groups: Are You In?

Just when we all thought Facebook was ruining everything, the social media network launches a new version of Groups – and it is actually good for things more than simply clogging our invites inbox and cluttering our profile pages (do I really feel more connected to anyone by joining ‘All the Lee’s of the World’?!). Facebook Groups is another amazing reason to remain an active social media-holic while somehow still getting work done:

Friend organization and productivity. Different from the older version of Groups, this new feature lets us categorize our friends for the purpose of mass messaging, photo and event sharing, and custom privacy settings (similar to the Friend Lists) Yet those days of Facebook were so unproductive – now, groups can edit documents together. This is good news for those inevitable collaboration projects in class since the slackers can no longer get by with the excuse, “I didn’t get that email…”

Group news feed and notifications. Because your default news feed is already flooded with drunk status updates and virtual PDA between a pair of high school sweethearts, Groups has a separate feed fit for members only. This allows people to post content relevant to the group in place where people will actually read it, and notification preferences can be set so that your iPhones aren’t constantly lighting up mid-lecture when your friends are all online.
