The Morning After: The Angry Toilet

[Everyone’s got a morning after story (though most don't involve the walk of shame and someone's dad) and we wanna hear yours! Send it over to us and we’ll post it – anonymously, of course – right here!]

“Chug! Chug! Chug!” was all I heard as I funneled my Natty Light. I was standing on a table (don’t judge) at the dirtiest best frat house on campus, my head tilted back, guzzling down that cheap beer like it was going out of style. (Editor’s Note: Was Natty Light ever in style?) When I was done, I jumped off the table, did a little curtsy and high fived a couple boys, before grabbing my roommate by the arm and dragging her toward the bathroom.

That being my 5th (or 6th? 7th?) beer of the night, it had gone straight through me and there was no way I was going to wait in that bathroom line all by myself.

The line was long but I didn’t mind. It gave me plenty of time to soak up all the “you go girl”s and “you’ve got mad chugging skills, woman”s that came my way. I smiled, blushed and crossed my legs to keep my broken seal from dripping down my legs.

When it was finally my turn, my roomie and I rushed in so I could relive my bladder and dissect my arch enemy’s truly hideous outfit choice for the night (the girl was wearing a skirt so short I could see if she was ovulating….. needless to say, there was plenty to talk about). We were so caught up in our conversation (and perhaps taking a few funny bathroom pics) that we ignored the angry knocks on the door (as well as the angry, “what are you doing in there, pooping?”) and took our own sweet time. Intro to Cooking: Harry Potter Recipes Galore!

So, the new Harry Potter movie comes out this Friday, and if it’s as good as the trailer makes it seem, I may or may not be catching a midnight showing. (If any of you ladies go to Brown and are donning your wizard robes with Emma Watson, I am totes jealous. Major girl crush here.) And if that’s not enough to get you in a Harry Potter frenzy, the International Quidditch Association’s Quidditch World Cup is taking place right now in New York City.

If you’re planning on recreating some of the magic of either of these grand events at home, I’ve found some mouth-watering recreations of famous Potter treats. Cauldron cakes, butterbeer, licorice wands…all simple to make, and perfect for a dorm party! Read More »

CC Beauty Live: Gold Smokey Eye

I know you guys have been waiting for another tutorial, and it’s finally here! I had a cocktail party this weekend and usually, I do a super dark smokey eye. This time I wanted to do something different, so I went with a black and gold look that I think turned out fabulously.

And the best part is, it takes under 10 minutes to do! You can’t beat that (especially when you got pre-partying to do)!

I honestly don’t have the time to spend 20 minutes doing my makeup, so I’ve been working on ways to save time. I do my whole face and hair in less than fifteen minutes for class (yes, really), and I figured I should share how I work with you all. I think this look is perfect for the holidays and you could definitely play with a variety of gold color combos. Read More »

One Month Challenge: Gymvember, Week Two

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. This month, Melanie is putting her health first and going to the gym....every day....without excuses. We watched her suffer through her first week, so how did she handle week 2?]

So I’ve made it through week two, and surprisingly, it’s gotten better every day. I’ve been pushing myself and have discovered the joys of OnDemand exercise videos featuring Jillian Michaels, which I use to warm up before I put in my time at the gym. I asked you all last week for some tips and tricks to get through this and I was overwhelmed with the responses. The encouragement you guys dispensed made me feel great and it made me feel even better when some of you indicated that you’d be joining me for Gymvember!

One piece of advice that I wish I had heeded this week came from a comment warning me, “Obviously if you are not a morning person do not workout in the morning. You are just going to hate it and your performance will reflect your feelings.” (Thanks “A Dude”!) However, I had a lot to do after work one day and knew I wouldn’t have time to go to the gym at night. So, I begrudgingly woke up an extra hour or so earlier and went to the gym. That was awful. I hate mornings and it absolutely did reflect in my workout. I was sluggish, cranky and felt like a zombie afterward. I think I’m going to stick to my evening workouts from now on; the morning does nothing for me, especially before I’ve had my iced coffee (yes, I realize it’s November… I mean, Gymvember). Harry Potter Goes to College?

In the back of my closet sits a neatly folded black robe, a phoenix feather wand, and costume makeup. Like Nagini’s eerie parseltongue, they seem to whisper my name louder and louder as the release date for part one of The Deathly Hallows nears. For those die-hard Harry Potter fans out there like me—whose favorite pastime includes arguing over which house their real-life friends would be in— it can seem unfathomable, absolutely preposterous that some people have never read the Harry Potter series.

How, they ask, could parents let their children miss out on such a blissful and beautiful reading experience? And, likewise, how could some children not force their parents to reignite their now-dead imaginations with a bit of wizardry? Some cite the evils and villains the novels include as too harsh for children. Some feel they are above the pre-teen categorized stories.

However, I am here to prove these naysayers wrong. Not only is the Harry Potter series a must-read for any literate human being, it’s also a beacon of literary, religious, and historical references. It challenges readers’ ideas of ethics and provides youngins with information they would otherwise toss-aside if in a different format.

Still unconvinced that Harry Potter isn’t worth a second glance? Or that it shouldn’t be considered lasting literature? Well, just ask these following universities that offer or have offered various interesting and completely awesome courses analyzing J. K. Rowling’s genius series. Read More »

Saturday Read: Change of Heart, by Jodi Picoult

I know, I know. I’m a total book hypocrite. I used to make fun of women who read boatloads of Jodi Picoult and look at me now! This is the 4th. book of hers I’ve reviewed for CC! (“My Sister’s Keeper,” “The Pact,” and “Plain Truth.”) But, I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again – she is GREAT for entertaining reading. This woman can write, which probably explains why she is so darn popular.

“Change of Heart” starts out sad. So sad, in fact, that I actually debated even reading it. June’s husband Jack passes away in a car accident and she is left all alone with their two-year-old, Elizabeth. Yes, that is how the book starts.  But I’m not surprised because, after all, I’m reading Jodi Picoult. Begrudgingly, I continued on. June falls in love with the police officer who broke the bad news of Jack’s death to her, Kurt Nealon, and they marry. Then June becomes pregnant. And then Kurt and Elizabeth are murdered by a handyman June hired to help out around the house.

Yes, it does come out of nowhere. And yes, three of the main characters die within the first 25 pages.

When I got to this point, I once again considered putting the book back on my bookshelf for good, but decided that Jodi Picoult would have to revive the story and it was probably worth reading. And luckily, I was right!

The handyman who killed June’s family is suddenly at the forefront of the novel. His name is Shay Bourne and he is definitely simple-minded. He is tried and sentenced, where we meet another character in the novel, Michael. He is on the jury that decides to invoke the rarely-used New Hampshire death penalty sentence and is so upset over the whole ordeal that he joins the seminary and emerges as “Father Michael.” Read More »

From CollegeFashion: How To Rock Faux Fur

[The following is a guest post from our gal pals at CollegeFashion.net. They're like college Rachel Zoe (with a little extra meat on their bones). Have you checked them out yet?!]

I know that there are a lot of mixed feelings on fur — personally, I’m an advocate of faux fur. Not only is is cheaper and animal-friendly, but there are incredible plush pieces available that keep you warm and look great. That said, my mom gave me her vintage white rabbit fur coat a couple years ago; I haven’t had the nerve to wear it in public, but it’s a shame that it has just been hanging out in my closet for so long. Although I would never buy a real fur item, I can understand keeping a vintage piece that holds sentimental value.

The other great thing about faux fur is that it is SO warm. There is nothing cozier to wrap around yourself on a windy night than a fuzzy coat. It also carries an air of sophistication and class — pair a coat with a string of pearls and red lipstick for some old Hollywood glamour.

There are many ways to rock faux fur without channeling stuffy old ladies who lunch or looking tacky. Curious to know how? Read More »
