Not Everything About Your Ex is Bad

Just about everyone out there seems to have dating horror stories. Seriously, ask anybody; chances are they’ll tell you that they have a relationship that they wish had just never happened. I myself went through a pretty nasty break up earlier this year. Not only was I with the guy for over 3 years, we lived together and were planning a wedding when I realized that what we were doing was a mistake and called everything off.

I’ve spent the past 7 months trying to put my life back together and pretty much hating my ex for how nasty he got post-breakup.

Recently, however, a friend and I were talking about living without regrets. She said, “I don’t regret anything. Sure I’ve made mistakes and have had rough times, but all of that made me who I am today. And I love what I see in the mirror, so why bother with regrets?” I love my friend for her incredible amount of self confidence, and she really made me think. I realized that instead of hating my ex and wishing that I’d never met him, not EVERYTHING about our time together was bad.

From every relationship I’ve been in, I’ve taken something away and learned from them all: Read More »

Fashion Porn: Getting Sweaty in Sweaters

While it might seem tempting to stay curled up in bed and hibernate as the temperature starts to drop, it’s getting to that time of year when you probably can’t afford to be skipping class. Yes, you might of realized this and reluctantly headed to class in what you consider your comfiest outfit ever (read: sweats and Uggs).

Big mistake.
Huge.

Look, I can’t change the weather for you, but I can introduce you to one of my wardrobe favs that will keep you feeling cozy, without looking like a slob.

Meet my best friend during cold Canadian winters: the sweater! (OK, so you probably already know about sweaters, but sometimes – like when it’s 9am and we’re staring at a pile of sweats – we all need a little reminder.) We’ve been through a lot of cold winter days when all I want to do is curl up under the covers and sleep until spring. Somehow even in the -40 degrees Celsius weather I occasionally encounter in my hometown, my good friends get me through the brutal cold. If you don’t have a warm, cozy sweater, you should run – not walk – to your nearest clothing store. Any one will do, because cute knitwear is everywhere this year.

There are cardigans and pullovers, nordic prints and solid colors, light knits and chunky knits – really something for everyone and every climate. And on those cold, dreary days, sweaters are the easiest way to dress; just toss one on over a tee or tank, pair with jeans and a pair of boots and – voila! – instant outfit. Every college girl should have at least one (if not ten!) in her wardrobe. I’ve got 15 beauties to introduce you to – and maybe you’ll meet your new, best, winter friend. Read More »

11 Biggest Celeb Crushes of Your Teenage Years [GALLERY]

Does anyone remember going to the grocery store with Mama in your younger years and rushing for the Capri Sun, and (most importantly) the Teen Bop magazine that provided you with all of the yummy screen shots of Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic and Romeo and Juliet?

I do.

In fact, I remember making my babysitter look through the entire magazine with me every time she came over so I could talk about how I was going to meet Leo one day, and we were going to get married.  My babysitter did not have to worry about playing Barbie-and-Ken-take-Miami with me.  All they had to worry about was my heart self-combusting with love and excitement in the presence of a shiny photo of Leo.  I hope my mother payed her overtime.

Therefore, in ode to Leonardo’s birthday week,  we are going to talk about our biggest celeb crushes of our teenage years.  After all, these are the first guys that made us want to learn to french kiss. Read More »

The Starting Line: Ready to Go Home

Amidst naked trees, pee on the toilet seat, and icy treks from the shower to the dorm room, the happy charm of college is beginning to wear thin.

Right now, I just want to go home and watch Desperate Housewives with my mom and not wear flip-flops in the shower! Ah, such are the woes of homesickness.

While this time is not as bad as the last time homesickness hit (sixth grade 3-day sleep away camp. . .never again), it certainly has taken its toll. Recently, I’ve found myself creeping through my high school albums on Facebook an unhealthy amount, as well as reading up on news from Cincinnati (my hometown) that I otherwise wouldn’t care about (apparently a fire halted production of a local potato chip company…).

I’m sure my lovely suitemates are already starting to get annoyed with my constant “I miss Ohio!” and variations of it — so what do I do to combat it?

It definitely helps to stay in touch with friends from back home. Because Thanksgiving break is so near, I know a lot of friends and I are already planning times to hang out over that week. We have happy coffee breaks, shopping trips and ole-fashioned sleepovers planned. It’s a nice, fuzzy feeling to realize that you have things to look forward to and people to meet up with when you go back.

Also, I’ve found it helps to call my mom sometimes. She helps on two levels: First, she happily agrees to cook my carefully selected menu for the week I’m home—nothing beats Mom’s Chinese dumplings. But perhaps more importantly, she fills me in on the fact that absolutely nothing is happening back at home. None of my friends are in town and the weather is just as cold there as it is here. My car is still sitting idle in our driveway and the kids who still go to high school still have to wake up at 6 in the morning to catch the bus.

The Know: Oil For Weight Loss? True Story

[Got something awesome everyone needs to know about? A really rad singer? A wicked new book? A chic and cheap clothing line? Email your “The Know” ideas to Jill@collegecandy.com or tweet me and I’ll pass them along to everyone right here, every week. Make your kindergarten teacher proud and share!]

Here is a totally random piece of info that I bet you didn’t know about.

It’s that time of year where we realize perhaps we’ve eaten a bit too much late night cheesy bread and we want to start losing some of the extra poundage so we look good in our skinny jeans by Thanksgiving weekend, lest our 8th grade crush see the dreaded muffin top eating all those pumpkin chocolate chip muffins has created.

So here’s a tip: Start cooking with coconut oil!

Seriously.

I know it sounds counter-intutive to use oil for weight loss, but coconut oil (available at any health food store) has been known to help with weight loss! Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight because it contains medium-chain fatty acids. MCFA’s, unlike other fats, are digested and utilized differently. They do not circulate in the bloodstream like other fats, but are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into energy – just like a carbohydrate. So when you eat coconut oil, the body uses it immediately to make energy rather than store it as body fat. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Not to mention, it actually helps your body’s metabolism, kicking it into high gear! Read More »

5 Simple Ways to Thank Veterans

Where else but America could we devote our lives to whatever career we want, eat whatever we want (and as much as we want), while subjecting ourselves to whatever guilty pleasures we want — and spoof the government that makes it all possible at the same time?

Compared with the rest of the world, Americans tend to live privileged lives. You know the spiel: it’s all possible thanks to the incredibly brave people who serve in the armed forces. But how often do we really stop and give them that thanks?

Well, it’s time. So today, Veterans Day, here are a few ways we ladies can show our appreciation for those who’ve helped preserve our uniquely American way of life.

Say Thank-You, Literally
College girls are gutsy. Put some of your verve to good use. Approach a family member, or – even better – a complete stranger on the street (veterans often sport their pride with commemorative T-shirts and ball caps, especially around the holiday). All you have to say is something like, “Thank you for your service,” or “I’m glad you’re alive.” This tiny exchange may seem awkward to you, but you will touch a veteran’s heart beyond belief with your consideration. Veterans often go years without hearing these simple words of gratitude.

Wardrobe Wish List: Anthropologie Gams Games Tights

I’ve been afraid of patterned tights since Gossip Girl made them such a trend. They look a tad bit tricky to pull off, which so makes me want to be the one who can pull them off perfectly.  Now that it’s just chilly enough that bare legs are gawked at but a winter coat is on hold until someone gets if for you for Christmas (hey mom!), tights are an affordable accessory that can keep your gams both warm and fashionable.

Enter the Gams Games Tights form Anthropologie. A very detailed floral pattern makes the flowers in the thigh area look like they were meant to be that large, not like they’re stretched out by the unfortunate truth that thighs are bigger than calves (especially after a few too many late-night pizza binges). The detail is also so becoming and shadowy enough that you won’t look like you wallpapered your legs, an unfortunate byproduct of some other floral tights.

There aren’t a lot of pieces out there that you can wear on any given occasion that can be considered wearable art – unless you’re Lady Gaga. These not only look like an artist sketched them onto your legs with the grey colors and shading details, but they’re the simplest way to add a wow factor to a plain, tailored dress or a tired plain skirt. Sexy Time: Stop Your Sexting

I never had a cell phone in high school. I guess I just wasn’t interested in being constantly plugged into the social web that was teenagerdom. It worked out pretty well for me, except for the fact that I missed out on all the juicy high school gossip as it happened. What I also managed to miss out on, though, was sexting – and I’m awfully glad I did.

It makes sense that in the age of information, fast internet, and viral videos, that eventually we horny humans would find a way to make all of these things sexual. I mean, why not text someone a picture of your boobs? Or record yourself having sex with your boyfriend? It’s not like there’s anything wrong with it if it stays between two people who love each other… right?
