You might not have noticed this, but here at CollegeCandy, we’re kind of TV addicts. Comedies. Dramas. Dramedies. It doesn’t really matter. As long as it’s on, we’ll watch it. And if we’re not there to see it, we’ll DVR it and watch it later.
But there’s one genre in particular that holds a special place in our hearts. That’s right, you guessed it, I’m talking about reality TV. Who needs actors and scripts when reality is just so damn entertaining all on its own? The people we watch, the situations they put themselves in, just can’t compete with figments of the imagination. And love ‘em or hate ‘em, reality shows have altered our lives and pop culture as we know it.
So, since it’s early on a Monday morning and there’s nothing on but the news (boring) and some Proactive infomercial (it’s too early for Avril Lavigne’s skin problems), let’s count down the top ten reality TV shows that changed our lives.
10. The Real Word. What? Do you think I have no sense of history? This is the longest running show on MTV. One of the longest running reality TV shows of all time. It set the standard for hot tubs and co-ed bathrooms and super dramatic fights that often involve throwing things. It’s a classic. It had to be here.
9. Iron Chef America. Or Top Chef. Everyday Italian with Giada De Laurentiis. Or Throw down with Bobby Flay. Basically any show that makes me hungry… while also teaching me what an amuse-bouche is. Or how to reduce cooking wine. Or the beauty of scallops. Seriously, why do I know these things? Oh yeah, TV. Read More »
You didn’t leave all your work until Sunday night did you? What!?! You did. That’s okay. No stress. You’ll get it all done. We’re so sure that you’ll get it all done that we’re giving you a few more excuses to procrastinate.
You’re welcome.

What do you have planned for Monday night?
A group meeting?
A date with the treadmill?
Well reschedule, because we’re teaming up with Philo (What’s Philo?! Um, only the hottest social networking thingy since Facebook) to throw the ultimate CollegeCandy Gossip Girl viewing party. As all of our loyal readers know, we’re obsessed with the show…even when it’s absolutely, completely ridiculous. But watching it alone gets boring, so we’re inviting everyone to watch it with us. Top 50 ways to make money in college

To most, summer means reuniting with hometown friends, hosting backyard barbecues with beer pong, and traveling around the world with the college budget out of sight. But for me, this past summer meant going home to jobs, internships and the tiny closet I haven’t used since high school. The three months of being at home again would be the longest period of time I would be living under my parents’ roof (and rules, again) since coming to college, which meant three months without going out, partying and/or anything else of college student fun.
It also meant three months without sex. I’m not a nympho, but I do have a functioning vagina. So it was a loooonnng summer.
Recently, I was given the opportunity to fly out to NYC, shack up at a nice little hotel in the Fashion District, and attend a Windows press event in an art gallery in Chelsea. Yes, my life is pretty baller. To add to the excitement, I was able to get an inside scoop on the new Windows Phone 7, which is in stores now and looking like a pretty nice addition to your technology arsenal.
I’m a loyal iPhone user, but I must admit – the Windows Phone 7 was pulling out some pretty cool tricks, including your own personal avatar (woot woot). And today, I’m standing in as your personal messenger. I hereby introduce to you: Windows Phone 7. Hey iPhone? You may have to scooch over a little bit…
Here are the features of the new Windows Phone 7 that may tickle your technological fancy:
Informative lock screen: In a lot of ways, the lock screen resembles iPhone’s. However, it lets you give your friends individual tiles on the start screen (essentially, you add your friends as apps) and it aggregates everything they do! Yes, from texts to Facebook and Twitter updates, you can follow it all in one handy little place. Creepy? Maybe, but totally satisfying.
Facebook Integration/Social Media Hub: Microsoft really took our Facebook/Twitter addictions to heart with a Social Media Hub, which allows you to pull up a friend’s contact information and contact them in your avenue of choice: posting on their FB wall, Tweeting @ them, texting them or, if you still even do this, calling them. Like I mentioned last week, skin care is one of the most important things in a beauty regimen. I treasure my skincare products, and I think it’s crucial to find a line of products that truly works for your skin. And it’s not easy with the shelves and shelves full of “miracle products” that claim to fix everything wrong with your skin (and generally don’t work).
But there are some companies out there with wonder products that truly, truly work!
The Body Deli is one of them.
They sent me two of their top selling products to test out and let me tell you: I am in love! Their products contain only organic, raw, and fresh ingredients. No crazy chemicals or acids whatsoever! The biggest qualm I have is the price, but overall I think it’s totally worth it if you’re looking for a good quality line with all the natural stuff your skin needs and loves. Read More »
[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. Last month Emmy dabbled in vegetarianism. This month, Melanie is putting her health first and going to the gym....every day....without excuses. How did her first 6 days go?]
How often do I go to the gym lately? I guess I would use the word “sparingly.” Since starting a full-time job, my fitness has taken a backseat to schoolwork, regular work and all the lovely stresses of living in New York City. Never mind the fact that I live in an apartment building with a gym. I’ve tried to justify my lack of rigorous exercise by walking to and from work every day (30 minutes both ways) but in reality, the only reason I do that is because I have a crippling fear of the subway and all public transportation.
Let’s face it, the only marathon I’ve ever participated in only happens when I’m too lazy to turn off E! and I get suckered into 5 hours of the Kardashians. It was time to make a change and get my ass back into shape and take full advantage of the fitness room in my building. So I’ve begun my month challenge, which I’ve endearingly nicknamed “Gymvember.” I’m not skipping a single day of exercise at the gym and have vowed to go for a minimum of 25 minutes a day. This minimum will ideally be exceeded. And no, Bravo marathons and walking around the city don’t count as exercise.
This is going to hurt. Read More »
