Single Girl Society: It’s Only Romantic The First Time You Go Back

In the last year, it seems as though being single has been my specialty. While flings and hookups have come and gone (pun intended) and dates have left me with some less than desirable memories, my current single status has remained loyally by my side. I’ve learned a lot in the past year and I’ve discovered that single girls around the world are all in the same fabulous pair of shoes.

So if you’re sick of sitting at a table for one, eating a meal portioned for two, I cordially invite you to join The Single Girl Society, where being single is more than status, it’s a lifestyle. Of course, with everything in life, the single girl lifestyle comes with rules and I’ve picked up quite a few along the way. So kick back, grab a drink and let the lessons I’ve learned serve as your very own roadmap to transitioning to and enduring the single life.

Though we’re all in a full-on finals crunch and the last thing your 5 Hour Energy buzz can handle is another lesson, I promise this is one you’ll actually use after college.

Lesson 2: It’s only romantic the first time you go back.

If you find yourself at a crossroad, where your single life intersects with your ex who wants you back, you should keep in mind that after the first time, going back won’t be considered romantic anymore. Nobody likes the couple that breaks up after every fight and then gets back together just weeks later. Just ask the Jersey Shore kids who’ve had to deal with Sammi and Ronnie for 2 years.

Just to clarify, that means you get one break up and one chance to go back after said breakup; the breakups and make-ups after that are treacherous. Girls who rush back into relationships with the same ex over and over are like the little girl who cried “break up” so many times that after a while, nobody believed her anymore. Her words have lost their value, as even her closest friends doubt her when she says, “Ugh guys, for real this time, I’m so done with him.”

While I believe in second chances, I find it harder to believe in third, fourth and fifty-second chances. Second chances can be like the band-aid of the relationship realm. Some of the strongest couples I know were ones who took a break and got back together. If it weren’t for second chances and girls going back to guys, our favorite romances would not exist and who really wants to imagine a world without The Notebook? Read More »

Everyone Needs Daily Affirmations

Finals blow. Studying blows. And now, Mother Nature blows. Does it really need to be this cold out?

It’s that time of year when it seems like everything is gray and bleak….and that’s why we thought it was a great day for a comeback tour for this awesome video. Jessica, one of our favorite preschoolers, reminds us just how awesome our lives can be. Because when times get rough, and writing a 12-page paper in 3 hours is rough, we all need our daily affirmations.

What To Wear To Your Winter Internship

After spending weeks searching Internships.com, writing cover letters and getting a few interviews, you’ve finally managed to land an internship for next semester. Wahoooo! You’re all ready to start – now what the heck do you wear? Dressing for internships can be difficult, especially on the limited college girl wardrobe. You want to look professional, obviously, but you also want to look, well, like you.

How do you create a work wardrobe that doesn’t make you look old and boring?

Don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

When you’re dressing for an internship, keep a few things in mind. One, if you’re going to be doing any errand running or anything that involves standing, how comfortable are your shoes? If you can’t walk in heels, don’t wear them to the office no matter how cute they look. Also, if you’re not sure of the office dress code, it’s always better to overdress for your first few days than to under dress. Dress pants, skirts and dresses are the safest and most desirable options. Read More »

WTF Friday: A Remote for Dorks

Why yes, dear readers, that is indeed a grown man in a wizard cap waving a wand. And what exactly is that man doing with the wand? Turning on his TV, obvi.

Wait, wizards don’t wear ill fitting Dad jeans….

Of course! That guy’s not a wizard! He’s just a dorky old dude who’s so obsessed with Harry Potter that he purchased a $100 remote that looks like a wand so he could pretend he went to Hogwarts with Harry and the crew!! Read More »

Lay Off Mark Zuckerberg!

If you’ve seen The Social Network, you peeked into the founding of Facebook (and commended Jesse Eisenberg for accurately acting like such a pretentious tech genius) and left feeling disdain for the Harvard drop-out behind it.

If you’ve logged onto Facebook sometime over the past week, you probably got “The New Profile” and begrudgingly forced yourself to get used to yet another new layout (after slamming Mr. Zuckerberg in a curse word-riddled status update).

And if you read headlines yesterday, you may have heard that Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg recently signed onto Bill Gates and Warren Buffet’s initiative called the “Giving Pledge.” According to Mashable, Zuckerberg has now promised to give more than half of his wealth (in the BILLION DOLLAR RANGE) to charity, either during his lifetime or after his death.

Is this simply a publicity stunt to make us love him?
And doesn’t that just make us loathe him even more? Read More »

Holiday Gift Guide: For the Fashionista [GALLERY]

The holiday seasons are all about eating too many dips, spending way too much money on frenemy gifts, and watching Elf on repeat. This year we’re prepared to take the stress and the frustration out of holiday gift giving by giving you the ultimate gift guides to buying the perfect presents for your favorite people (and we’re splitting into 3 different price ranges so you can choose the gift based on how much you actually like the person!). So set this series as your favorite because all week we’re bringing you the best.

We all have that friend, you know, the one who has the perfect outfit for every occasion. The one whose wardrobe makes your mouth water. The one whose every outfit looks like it stepped out of the pages of Vogue. She spends hours studying fashion magazines and style blogs and would rather be shopping than anywhere else. She knows exactly what she wants and exactly how to make it happen. Style is her sixth sense. So how do you even attempt to go about buying a present for someone with that type of shopping experience?

You get her something else to add to her fabulous wardrobe.

I’ve done some fashion magazine studying myself these last few days and found you ladies the perfect gifts for your fashion forward friends. Not only are all of these items absolutely on trend, but they’re also absolutely affordable, and any one of them would be a welcome addition to a fashionista’s wardrobe. Read More »

Friday Faves: The 8 People You Will Meet In The Library During Finals [GALLERY]

Finals Week has officially crept into our lives like the Grinch who stole Thirsty Thursdays.  I know I’ve spent the past three days straight camping out in the library, creating classical music radio stations on my Pandora and eating Wheat Thins and coffee for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I can’t even remember the last time I’ve showered at this point, but a recent armpit sniff test proves it’s been too long. All I want is a long day at the spa, lots of dark chocolate, and a(n abnormally long) happy hour.

Although Finals Week may be a brutal task, at least it is reassuring to know everybody has to fight through it. And when I say everybody, I mean everybody. The library has become a home away from home for many college students, most of whom I could definitely do without. Read More »

Duke It Out: Rating Sites

http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet/2010/12/07/rate_your_classmates/md_horiz.jpg

[It's pretty obvious that the average CollegeCandy reader has some very strong opinions. Opinions that she likes to share with everyone on the site. Sometimes with mean words. We love a strong woman (unless she happens to be charging at us with her fists raised), so we thought we'd give her a real forum to discuss her thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. Every Friday I'll be featuring a hot topic (like whether the first date is dead!) and leaving it up to you, the readers, to duke it out. So, read it and get your debate on in the comments section below!]

There has been a lot of controversy lately over sites like RateBU, where pictures of girls are posted online and people vote on whether or not they’re hot. Yeah, I only wish I’d made that up. Regardless of whether you think this kind of thing is just fine or is a pathetic excuse for shallow douchbaggery, the question that a lot of schools are facing is – should this be allowed to happen? The question’s on the table ladies, let’s get to it!

Side A – We’re not talking about consensual sites here, where people post pics of themselves for others to judge. What we’re talking about is random people finding photos of others and posting them for the world to rate. Is it just me, or hasn’t cyber-bullying been one of the big hot button issues of the last few years… and isn’t this pretty much exactly the same thing? Whether the girls get rated well or not, it’s still submitting them for judgment and potential ridicule without their knowledge or acceptance. And particularly when these websites are affiliated or related to colleges, shouldn’t they be required to shut down this kind of content and punish the offenders the same way they would if someone, say, put up derogatory posters about someone else all over campus?
