True Story: I Regret The Way I Lost My Virginity

Everyone says your first time should be with someone you love. Well, here’s something “everyone” didn’t tell you: just because you lose it with someone you love doesn’t mean you won’t regret it. I certainly do. While I loved Sam very much, it was not at all the right time. When I look back on it, I don’t have a pleasant memory.

I had a really tumultuous relationship with Sam for about six years on and off at the time, which probably was a red flag to begin with. But I was young and in love, and he was “the one.” The timing with us was always wrong. We’d both be seeing other people, but always gravitated back to each other regardless. We would stay up all night on the phone, bitching to each other about anything and everything.

One night we were talking, and the topic of sex came up. He was curious, I think, if I had slept with someone. I was shocked that Sam would even propose the idea that I would lose it to someone other than him. He was relieved; “Good because I love you, and I want to have that experience with you.” That’s funny because he wasn’t a virgin. He had actually lost it to my ex-best-friend, but that’s a whole other story that we won’t get into now. Read More »

Morning After: Never Drinking Again

[Everyone’s got a morning after story (though most don't involve a large group of potential sorority sisters) and we wanna hear yours! Send it over to us and we’ll post it – anonymously, of course – right here!]

It’s safe to say that my New Year’s Eve celebration got way out of control this year.

This year my college friends and I decided to go all out for the night. It’s our last year of college and we barely even talk to our home friends anymore, so it made perfect sense that we have a mid-break reunion in the big city. One of my friend’s aunt lives in NYC and she offered up her apartment for the weekend while she was away skiing with her family.

While we spent hours online figuring out travel arrangements and outfit choices, we never got around to actually planning our night. So when the clock start ticking on the 31st we had to go with the only thing we knew was actually happening. A friend of a friend of a cousin of a roommate of a Craigslist killer of a friend was throwing a party in his apartment and told us we were more than welcome to come. We’ve watched Sex and the City so we thought we knew what we were in for — a gorgeous, spacious apartment overflowing with booze and horny well-dressed men.

Intro to Cooking: Peanut Butter Banana Bread

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston may be ancient history, but there’s one American super-couple that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon: peanut butter and banana. Today’s recipe takes the classic sandwich and, well, turns it inside out to create a savory snack or a meal on the go.

The Ingredients: Everyone knows bananas are high in potassium, but their high fiber content and the variety of sugars they offer (glucose, fructose, and sucrose) make them ideal sources for extended energy. They are also high in iron. Besides being the one of the tastiest snacks, peanut butter is also one of the healthiest: it’s high in monosaturated (good!) fats that help prevent bad cholesterol from building up. PB also contains nutrients like niacin and calcium.

The Recipe:

3 large, very ripe (read: disgusting and brown) bananas

2 eggs

1/2 cup butter or substitute (my fave for baking is Earth Balance)

1 1/2 TBS sour cream or buttermilk

1 tsp lemon juice

1 cup sugar

1 cup natural peanut butter

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

2 cups flour

Note: For a real peanutty punch, replace 1/2 cup of flour with peanut flour

CC Beauty Live: Winter Woes

A few weeks ago, I gave you all some winter tips to keep your skin and hair in check as the weather started getting chilly. Well, now I’ve got some more! There are some of the same (like moisturize A LOT! And use Aquaphor!), but how else will I drill it into your head? This stuff’s important, yo.

If you live at the beach and are not suffering from any winter issues, then I hope you know how jealous I am of you. But you’re jealous of my winter hat because it’s so freakin’ cute, so I guess we’re even.  And just because you’ll be really tan when I get back from winter break doesn’t mean I won’t be, too. That’s what Jergen’s Gradual Tanning Lotion is for, duh.

If you are having winter issues, then I hope I’m some help to you! And if you have other problems that aren’t mentioned, ask away in the comments, and I’ll try my best to help you out!

One Month Challenge: Coffee-Free January, Week One

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. Last month, Megan went 4 weeks without dining out. This month, Charlotte's kicking her bean habit. At least she's gonna try....]

Like I said before, I was feeling cocky about this challenge. I stocked up on energy drinks and planned to get at least 8 hours sleep a night. I’ll be fine, I thought. It’s only a month.

But obviously, what was the first day of my challenge? You’ve got it, New Year’s Day. I didn’t exactly have a riot of a New Year’s; in fact, I kinda hate it. I went to my auntie’s 50th Birthday party with my parents and banked on a reasonably early night. However, there was a mix up getting our lift home and we ended up waiting almost two hours for a taxi. Two am rolled by and I found myself half-asleep on a chair. I got home around 2:30 and then ended up staying up until three. Why, well I had someone to speak to.

See, I’m a British girl studying abroad in America home for Christmas, and I’m seeing a boy back in the States. Here in the UK we’re 6 hours ahead, so 3am is a perfect time to speak to him. I always intend to turn off my phone and go to sleep, but once the conversation starts, it’s hard to stop. And sometimes when I wake up in the night I can’t resist seeing if he’s online, which he usually is. Three am turns into four…

And I’m a morning person. So is my family. Activity starts in our house around 8am, even in the holidays, which usually leaves me reaching for the coffee. Something which I can no longer have. No matter how good it smells when I walk into the kitchen. And trust me, it smells GOOD. Read More »

Your “OMG Winter Break is Ending Soon” Bucket List

Every winter break I always promise myself that I will be more organized than the last. I always mean to do all the things I dreamed of doing during finals when I was stuck in my study war-zone of an apartment, dreaming of the freedom and food of home. And then I get home, spend 10% of my time watching TV and 90% of my time stalking my college friends’ Facebook walls, and before I know it, it’s time to head back to school for round two.

So for those of you who have found yourself in the same sloth-like state as me and have only a few days left until break is officially a thing of the past, here is a list of things to accomplish that will make you feel, er, accomplished.

Now Showing: True Grit

Confession: I don’t do well with Westerns. And maybe that sentence makes no sense to you. But I’m thinking that the majority of people reading this review also conjure up images of confusing plotlines, boring shootouts, and racism when they hear the word “Western.” And if those generalizations don’t prove to you that I am not an expert on the genre, you can ask my TA from film class last semester and I’m sure he will tell you that my paper on Westerns last semester was…less than impressive.

But, all that being said, I loved True Grit.

In True Grit, a fourteen-year-old girl (Hailee Steinfeld) enlists the help of a U.S. Marshal (Jeff Bridges) to avenge her father’s death, with the on-and-off help of a Texas Ranger (Matt Damon). My love for this film probably had everything to do with the Coen brothers’ directing, the acting, and the actual worthwhile message.

From CollegeFashion: Make a North Face Jacket More Stylish

[The following is a guest post from our gal pals at CollegeFashion.net. They're like the college Rachel Zoe (sans baby bump). Have you checked them out yet?!]

On any given day here at OU, I’d bet at least 60% of students are rocking The North Face, Columbia or Patagonia (“Fratagonia”, as some might say) outerwear. Perhaps it’s a southern or midwestern cliche, but literally EVERYONE I know owns a zippered or pull-over fleece jacket. And I’m betting many of you probably own one, too. (Admit it!)

As popular as they are, jackets like these are often negatively associated with “the uniform”, as I like to call it. You know, the Uggs/leggings/oversized V-neck/fleece jacket combo that is popular at countless colleges across the nation. While I’m not saying it’s “wrong” to dress this way, why not challenge yourself to think outside the box and rock a more unique outfit?

There’s a way to rock these babies and still stand out in a crowd. Just because you’re in a situation that requires a warm, tough, and no-frills jacket, it doesn’t mean that you have to give up looking stylish. I hope you find this styling challenge as practical and fun as I did.

Tips and Trick for Making a Fleece Jacket More Stylish

Add a funky scarf. This is the easiest way to dress up a fleece coat. A colorful scarf will catch the eye of people around you. Others will pay attention to the texture, or the unique way it’s tied around your neck.

Wear one with a hat. A slouchy beanie adds a laid-back vibe to any outfit, including one with a plain fleece jacket. Plus, you’ll stay super warm!

If you have to buy a fleece, look for unique styles. I love the plush and fur-lined versions I’ve seen.

Pair one with chic shoes. Fleece jackets go great with riding or motorcycle boots, or those cute lace up ankle boot wedges that are getting popular. They also look fine with oxfords, ballet flats, loafers, and anything casual. Read More »
