Body Blog: When in Doubt, Stretch It Out

Sometimes, we may be really enthusiastic when we’re working out (i.e. hot guy at 9:00 and I know he’s watching me work this treadmill). This extra push on the body may cause strain to your muscles and no one wants leg cramps or excessive soreness the following morning!

Stretching is good for us pre-work out because it warms up our otherwise stiff muscles, which get especially stiff in this cold, cold weather. Post-work out, it reinforces your flexibility and rewards those hard worked muscles. Plus, it just feels good. (Tip: Be sure not to bounce when you stretch because it can cause tears in within your muscle fibers – instead, hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds and even it out on both sides.)

Here are a few of my favorites! Cool down with these easy moves in between classes or right after some crazy leg squats. Read More »

The Weekly Ten: High School Fashion Mistakes

Big mistake. Huge.

So I was flipping through some old Facebook albums the other day (you know the ones people label THROWBACKS! OLDSCHOOL! And OMG WHAT WAS I THINKING!!!! ) when in between fits of hysterical laughter, I started to catch sight of what I actually looked like. And all I can say is, seriously? I mean, seriously? I know I was young and naïve, but I don’t remember being that naïve.

Unstyled hair.
Poorly applied makeup.
And terrible, terrible fashion choices.

But the thing is, I wasn’t alone in these choices. No, they were all the rage once upon a time. Don’t pretend you didn’t think you were so cool with your Victoria’s Secret PINK sweatpants and ponchos (hopefully not worn together). I know you were right there with me, doing the sideways look in the mirror, thinking you looked so good. But really, none of us had any no clue what we were doing. And now years later, as seasoned fashionistas, we can look back on these fashion disasters and laugh.

Or cry. Whichever you prefer, really.

10. The original Ugg Boot. I already know people are going to rage against this one, but Uggs are not attractive. They’re just not. Comfortable? Yes. Warm? Yes. But not attractive. And although they’re still around today, worn on those rainy/snowy/slushy/extra cold days when nothing else seems quite as appropriate, I will forever think of my high school years as the Uggs-with-skirts years. And those are some very bad years.

9. The Messy Bun. Flip your head over. Compile all of your hair into a ball atop your head. Wrap a hair tie around it. Styling complete. It’s still worn today, but at least in college we can admit that it’s not so much attractive as it is convenient… Read More »

9 Mistakes Everyone Makes on Their First Date— and How to Avoid Them

Ahhhhh, the first date.  It can be the start of something great or can easily take a quick turn down the crapper.  You may have thought the date went as perfect as can be, but if Mr. Lover Boy hasn’t called you back for another one in over three days, chances are it didn’t.

Instead of sitting there overanalyzing every single detail of the date and what could have gone wrong (like we all do), I’ll make it simple for you. Here are the mistakes everyone makes on their first date and what you can do to avoid them.

1. Not dressing for the occasion. If you’re going to a baseball game, don’t wear stiletto heels. If you’re going out to eat somewhere nicer than McDonald’s, change out of your sweats. It’s as simple as that. And if you’re Lady Gaga, obviously no rules apply to you.

How to Avoid Making the Mistake: Make sure you know where you’re going on the date. If it’s a surprise, it’s always better to play it safe and wear something casual. Not too sloppy, not too dressy.

2. Talking about exes. Talking about ex-boyfriends isn’t just annoying on dates— it’s annoying all the time. 3 words: Get. Over. It. And if you can’t, maybe you shouldn’t be dating quite yet. If you do decide it’s time to enter the wonderful world of dating, make sure you keep the conversation far away from ex-land. No guy wants to sit and listen to you whine about how his eyebrows aren’t groomed as well as your ex-boyfriend’s.

Morning After: Okay, Maybe Wine Juice Boxes Aren’t a Good Idea

[Everyone’s got a morning after story (though most don't involve a large group of potential sorority sisters) and we wanna hear yours! Send it over to us and we’ll post it – anonymously, of course – right here!]

Wine is cheap in Europe, super cheap. I made that discovery early on during my semester abroad, and took advantage of it during my spring break in Italy. As all college students know, boxed wine in the States is a great invention which allows for portable drinking, but this idea has been one-upped in Europe, with the creation of what my friends and I would lovingly refer to as “wine boxes.” One liter of “table” (ie. awful) wine in a pouch, with an oh-so convenient pop tab opening which allows you to reseal your wine and take it on the go! They’re adult juice boxes, with alarming consequences I would eventually realize.

CC Beauty Live: The Bang Trim

I love my bangs, but when they get too long and unruly, it can be a huge pain. While there are some cute ways to pin them back, I’d rather have them down. But how can I have them down if they’re hanging in my eyes? It’s not like I have endless time or money to be popping into the salon for a trim.

What’s a girl to do?
Grab your scissors, girls. We’re gonna learn to trim!

A lot of you have asked about how to trim your bangs and I’m going to show you. In this video, I go through how to trim and style swoop bangs. For those looking for a blunt/straight across trim, that might happen in the near future if I get bored with my hair, but for now you can follow the same kind of process I’m doing here.

A little advice: Breathe. It really is easy once you get over the nerves! But seriously, if you were bad with safety scissors as a kid, just go to the salon. Oftentimes if you know your stylist well, they’ll fit you in and give you a little bang trim for free between regular haircuts.

Got something you want me to cover? Post it in the comments below. And don’t forget to check out my other videos right here!

One Month Challenge: Coffee-Free January, Week 3

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. This month, Charlotte’s kicking her bean habit. Her first week wasn’t as easy as she was expecting, her second week was worse. Is the withdrawal finally over?

Okay, this month was going to be hard no matter what. A month without coffee? Find me a hundred college students who would voluntarily do that. Hell, find me one. But add to that the fact that a) it’s January, notoriously the hardest, coldest and most depressing month of the year and b) the fact that I’m an international student who not only tried to pack in as much as she could while she was home but also has to deal with jet-lag and a full day of traveling.

Put it this way: contrary to what I expected to happen as this month progressed, this week has been the hardest yet.

My flight was at 9am Saturday morning. I had to be at the airport at 6am and we decided that 4am would be the most appropriate time to get up. Great, I thought, I’ll hit the hay about 8pm so I get a solid 8 hours before my flight. As with most plans for an early night, this did not happen.

At 7pm my Dad suggested an episode of Dexter. Now I’m new to the Dexter thing; after a semester in America I realized I was clearly missing out on something so we borrowed the first two seasons while I was home. Fine, a couple of episodes will be great. Unfortunately, we only had 3 episodes left, so after two I knew I had to know what happened next. One more episode? Hey, why not, it’s not like I can’t have a gallon of coffee to wake me up in the morning. I fell into bed around 10pm. Read More »
