Spring Break Safety Tips

Spring Break is approaching quickly.  Soon a number of the nation’s college students will be basking in the warm sunlight and frolicking in blue-green waters of the tropics. But before you pack your bikini and tuck your passport safely into your Longchamp, take a minute to think about safety. Like, really think about it. Between the daily violence in Mexico and the general safety issues that could arise by merely being away from home in a foreign country, it’s important that you take your safety seriously.

I know, I sound like a helicopter parent and you’re probably all, “Oh, that would never happen to me!” But girl, you aren’t invincible!

I can’t help but think about Natalee Holloway. She was a regular girl on a senior trip and just like us, heading off to Aruba for a vacation with her friends. And then tragedy struck. Contrary to what you’re convincing yourself, it could happen to any one of us, so now we must learn from her tragic incident and take some safety precautions to stay safe abroad.

There are many safety tips we learned in elementary school—don’t trust strangers, always travel in groups—that still hold true today. So let’s brush up on those rules to ensure a safe and memorable Spring Break trip.

I don’t think I’m in Kansas anymore!” You got it, Dorothy, you’re no longer in the good ole’ U.S. of A.  You don’t know a soul, besides your friends or your Spring Break group, and everyone (the cab driver, the guy selling knock-off purses on the corner, the bartender) seems like someone you can trust.  While there are many trustworthy people abroad, there are also many who prey on college Spring Breakers. And why not? Drunk, stumbling and toting expensive purses full of cash, we’re easy targets. Stay on your game, be aware of your surroundings and take precaution. This includes everything from zipping your bag when you carry it to not walking home alone.

Speaking of which…. Read More »

The Biggest Trends from Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week

Another New York Fashion Week has come and gone, and if it weren’t for the fact that London starts up just as it ends, I’d be spiraling into a deep pit of fashion depression, downing Chunky Monkey as I flipped through pictures of my favorite collections for the 47th time. I’m not crazy, I just feel like this year NYFW and I took our relationship to the next level. Though we’ve been doing long distance forever, the live-streaming of my favorite shows has been making it easier to cope. We even spent Valentine’s day together this year, with our dear friends, Betsey and Marc.

Yeah, it’s kinda serious.

While shopping for Fall clothes is still many months away, there is lots to look forward to once you hit the mall come August (despite what we originally expected/feared). Next fall will be far from drab, with lots of bright and neon colors. And the little red dress you rocked on Valentine’s Day appears to have some staying power, so hang onto it! Oh and if you’re sick of the horizontal stripe, have no fear; Marc Jacobs was all about the polka dots, so you may have a new simple pattern to hate next year.

With some designers looking to the post-war 1940s for inspiration and others drawing from the grunge era of the ’90s, fall fashion is going to be varied, fun and exciting. And I can’t wait! Wonder what you’ll be wearing on the first day of classes? Here’s a look at the biggest trends from Fall 2011 NYFW: Read More »

Jenna Marbles’ Foolproof Way to Avoid Talking to People

So you might remember Jenna Marbles from the last time we featured this lovely lady here on CollegeCandy. Back then, she was teaching us how to trick people into thinking we’re really good looking. (It’s funny because its true.) And it worked. So well, in fact, that Jenna needs to give us some more advice.

You see, now that we’ve got our good looking girl disguises on we’ve got guys hitting on us ALL. THE. TIME. And by “hitting on us” we mean “grinding up against us while we try to throw our hands up in the air like Taio Cruz.” And frankly, it can get a little annoying. So Jenna solved that problem for us, too. Check out the video below to hear Jenna’s Foolproof Way to Avoid Talking to People.

Totally trying this tonight.

5 Job Hunting Mistakes that Scream “I’m Unprofessional”

Whether you’re graduating this spring or you’re hunting for a summer internship, you’re probably stressed about acing your interviews. To help alleviate some of that stress, we reached out to the experts from Excelle and asked them for their tips on making a great first impression. Check back every Thursday for more helpful career tips and articles!

In most job-filling situations, the employer has the luxury of choosing from several well-qualified applicants, all of whom could probably do the job. That’s when the little things, like the common but often unrecognized mistakes described here, almost always come into play. Make sure you avoid them, so they don’t cost you a shot at the job.

1. Using a Cutesy Email Address for Correspondence

Example: cutiepie@domain.com, or — far worse — something like sexkitten@domain.com.

You Might Think: It’s a clever, memorable email address everyone will get a kick out of.

The Employer Will Probably Think: I can’t believe someone would actually list this email address on her resume, let alone use it to correspond with me. Will she do the same thing on the job if I hire her? Yikes! Read More »

The Know: Kick Those Chocolate Cravings to the Curb

Here’s a fact: there are few times in a day when I would pass up the temptation of something chocolate. Save for when I first wake up… er… scratch that. Let’s try this again:

There is NEVER a time in the day – not even once, not even a half second – where I wouldn’t want something chocolate. It’s getting to the point where I totally get how Charlie Sheen feels. Mmmhmmm, it’s that bad.

Except, if I gave into my chocolate obsession I wouldn’t just be filling the void in my belly, I would also be filling out my dress. And my jeans. And my swimsuits. In a big, not-so-cute-way. Chocolate chip muffin? Good. Muffin top as a result of chocolate? Not so much.

So in order to keep myself happy, sane and clothed, I’ve resorted to indulging in the good stuff once in a while (I’m talking to you, Sprinkles Cupcakes!) and finding healthy chocolate alternatives to kill my daily (or a few times daily) cravings. It both satisfies the chocolate craving AND the reassurance that my jeans will still fit up over my thighs tomorrow. And those two things are pretty much all the happiness a girl could ask for, right? Well, that and Jason Segel showing up at my doorstep…covered in chocolate. What? A girl can dream.

Anyway, here are my three favorite chocolate-distractions. If you’ve got an unyielding need for the ooey, gooey, creamy goodness of chocolate, these should kick that unhealthy craving to the curb. Read More »

A Generation of Oversharers Joins the Workforce

So…here’s the thing.

I am a big fan of social networking. Huge. Some might call me an addict. Facebook. Twitter. The internet in general. You don’t spend your time blogging, tweeting, and updating all day if you’re not a fan of the internet. But even I have to admit that sometimes being a product of the Facebook generation has its faults.

Just look at what happened to Natalie Munroe, the Central Bucks High School English teacher, who was suspended after posting degrading comments about her students on a personal blog. And now, she’s all over the internet, and not in a good way. Munroe posted the comments over a year ago, but the blog was recently discovered when someone posted it on a Facebook page and eventually one of the parents turned it into the school.

Munroe claims that she never imagined that anyone would actually read what she wrote. But they did. And now she’s one of the biggest stories of the week. The blog has since been taken down. But the quotes and comments still live on. And that’s the most important part to remember, I think, for our generation, at least.

We’re a generation of oversharers (and if you think you’re not, think again). We lack boundaries. People post about everything from their bathroom habits to their sexcapades without giving it a second thought. But what happens when someone reads that comment about your horrible boss and shows it to said horrible boss? Or when you tell your friend you’re home sick and then post pictures of yourself with your boyfriend two hours later? How many times do you update your Facebook a day? Probably more than you realize. We do it without even thinking about it. Everything that happens has to be shared. It’s part of who we are. It’s part of what we do. But now we need to think about how what we do on the internet will affect what we do in real life.

Baggin’ Out: Rebecca Minkoff Nikki

Every girl needs a good purse. Whether you’re going for groceries or running from class to class, they are simply essential for holding all your, uh, essentials. Now, clutches and tiny crossbody bags are convenient when you don’t have much to carry, but what about when you’re lugging around textbooks? Every college girl understands the challenge that is finding a chic and stylish purse that also fits all your junk.

That’s where the Rebecca Minkoff ‘Nikki’ comes in.

Rebecca began designing purses in 2005 after a successful run in the indie apparel world. Her bags caught on like wildfire (thanks to her creatively designed/named ‘Morning After Bag’) and are now among the most coveted out there. Purse afficianados (me!) wait in suspense for the newest Minkoff line every season. However, Rebecca also knows what her fans want and keeps her classics in rotation, adding new, fun colors every season.

The Nikki is part of this Classic line and rightly so. It’s a hobo-style that rebeccaminkoff.com say is “As slouchy as your Sunday jeans and as vibrant as the smile on your face when you carry it.” How cute is that?! (I know, I have a total purse crush on the entire Rebecca Minkoff team!) They all sport the buckle hardware on both sides, and you can also get styles with linear or circular studs, adding a touch of rocker chic to the mix. Read More »
