Valentine’s Day is supposed to be about expressing your love for…uh…the people you love. But what it actually is, is a commercialized way to turn love into a cheese-tastic card with the words “I wuv u” written across the top.
And for many people, it’s a commercialized way to turn love into a cheese-tastic card with the words “I wuv u” written across the top purchased last minute on their way to see that special someone. I know this because I watched 10 guys scramble around the drugstore snatching cheap crap up while I picked up some chocolate for breakfast this morning.
And let me tell you, it was hard to watch. My heart totally went out to whomever is on the receiving end of these “gifts.”
So for your viewing pleasure (or a little sneak peek into what you might be feigning enthusiasm for later tonight), here is a small sampling of the crappiest ways to say ‘I Luv You.’ Read More »
So last week I sat down and thought of all of the things I’m not going to miss about being a college student. I convinced myself that this whole graduation thing was good. That I wouldn’t really miss college, so much as the friends that I’d leave behind in college. The classes and the books were going, but that didn’t mean my social life would have to go with it. And that’s all fine and good, except well, there are quite a few things about college that make my social life possible, quite a few things I recently realized I won’t have after May.
So, here are five reasons I’m going to miss college. A lot, a lot.
1. Three Day Weekends. The first semester of my freshman year I was blessed with an amazing schedule. Classes three days a week. I had Mondays and Wednesdays off. As a senior, I would complain about having Friday classes, but as a freshman just the idea of not having classes every single week day was enough to make me jump for joy (literally). But as a college senior it’s kind of expected. Classes end on Thursday. Friday is part of the weekend. Two semester ago there was a class offered on Friday mornings that I simply had to take. It was horrible, and I was out by 11:00. In the real world? I’m going to have to work all day on Friday. All day!?!
2. Knowing My World. I’m comfortable at college. I have my friends. My frenemies. My job. My classes. My extracurricular activities. Professors I love. Professors I avoid at all costs. I know my world, socially and academically. I know where I am and what I’m doing at all times. (Except maybe on Friday nights.) I am comfortable at college. But I won’t be comfortable in the real world. And that reminds me… Next year… Read More »
Almost three weeks after riots began in Egypt, protesters’ demands were met and President Mubarak stepped down. In what is being talked about as one of the most stunning revolutions in Arab history, hundreds of thousands of people descended on Tahrir Square in Cairo in protest of the president’s 30-year reign. Now, many of the same people who were involved in the riots have stuck around to help clean up- sweeping, painting and cleaning their home. Since Mubarak stepped down, the military has dissolved Parliament and taken control until elections take place in six months. The story in Egypt is far from over, so, like I said last week, stay tuned.
So, the Grammys happened last night. At least I think they did. I mean, did anyone actually receive an award? Oh wait. Yes. Esperanza Spalding did, much to the chagrin of Justin Bieber’s super fans. Watch your back, girlfriend. They’re coming to get you!
Not that I’m complaining. It was the perfect show for me. I had brownies, wine, amazing performances from beginning (Divas, what?) to middle (I’m talking to you Cee-Lo) to end (Rihanna, you take my breath away), and of course, the kind of fashion that only happens when you put a lot of creative (and rich) people in one room.
A while back, I was power walking to my class in a fierce rage. I was extremely late, like usual, and I didn’t want to deal with any feet draggers/text-and-walkers on my way to class. Lucky for me, I was stuck with a group worse than someone moving at the speed of a lost freshman….a campus tour. As I gritted my teeth behind them on the path, I listened in on the overly chipper leader in the khaki pants.
“And, there is our workout facility. It’s just like Lifetime fitness…but purple!” (Side Note: Our school colors are purple and silver). I snorted loudly into the cold air; just like Lifetime fitness…but purple?!? You have got to be kidding me. Our campus workout facility was a pile of workout sh*t, and in no way resembled a national, popular facility people actually paid for. Either the tour guide was paid to say that, or he was color blind (it wasn’t even purple)… and on drugs.
Every college student who has been on a campus tour is well aware that those guides are full of silly little lies. And sometimes, the lies are the things they didn’t even tell you. You know, that whole “lie by omission” thing. So let’s wipe the sleep out of our eyes, lift our heads off of our too-small lecture hall desks, and take a look at the little things your campus guide should have told you: Read More »
With three words I’ve probably caused every single reader to groan in frustration. You’re probably trying to forget this day exists, aren’t you? Trying to pretend this is just a normal Monday.
Well it’s not. Today is Valentine’s Day. And single or coupled, or complicated, Valentine’s Day is a day worth celebrating. (Hello, we spent an entire week trying to get that point across!) You cannot escape the mayhem that surrounds this day. You cannot ignore it. You cannot hide from it. So you might as well embrace it. And here’s why…
10. Those valentines you used to get as a little kid. You know what I’m talking about. You probably have a whole bunch of them saved somewhere. The ones that have your favorite cartoon characters on them. The ones with too much lace and cheesy sayings. The ones you loved then and still love now.
9. Chocolate. Not only is it delicious, but apparently it’s also good for you. And Valentine’s Day is one of very few holidays when you can eat an entire box of chocolate truffles without getting strange looks, whether you bought them for yourself or they’re a gift from your beau. Read More »
Wow. So happy you’re here! For a little while there we thought all our CollegeCandy fans would be off studying and highlighting…but no (sigh of relief), you’re better than that. It’s Sunday night and you have a few more hours of freedom before the school week kicks in. You’ve made the right choice!
So do what you do best – pour yourself a drink and make fun of our favorite autotuned talented performers. And it’s the Grammys so that shouldn’t be hard. I mean Lady Gaga’s outfits write their own jokes. No but seriously, I think her dress this year is made up of discarded knock-knock jokes written on construction paper.
All you have to do to join in on the fun is Tweet @ccliveblog and your tweets will show up below! Let’s get our liveblog on! Read More »
You didn’t leave all your work until Sunday night did you? What!?! You did. That’s okay. No stress. You’ll get it all done. We’re so sure that you’ll get it all done that we’re giving you a few more excuses to procrastinate.
This was a special week. Not because of the Super Bowl or Fashion Week or anything else that’s happened this week that I’ve already managed to forget about, but because after weeks and weeks without our favorite group of singers, we got two episodes of Glee. That’s right, not one but two.
And as I sat down to revel in their renditions of Michael Jackson and Katy Perry’s greatest hits, I was glad to see that the writers had kept Lauren Zizes around even after sectionals. And even more so, I was glad to see that she had a pretty large part in this past Tuesday’s episode.
Here at CollegeCandy we love Glee not just for its cute but oh so dumb boys and awesome musical numbers, but also for what’s at the heart of the show: being true to one’s self. Embracing who you are, strengths and weaknesses, the good and the bad, and taking pride in that. These characters are all underdogs in one way or another but being in Glee helps them to remember who they are, and to be okay with that.
But Lauren Zizes doesn’t need Glee club to help her break out of her shell. She’s a confident, independent, strong, badass woman, and she owns that. And that’s why Puck is crushing on her.
