Ah, the theme party. The chance for college students to mix things up for the night….or yet another opportunity to dress up in something slutty. Theme parties are an essential part of college life and you can’t graduate without attending at least one (hundred). But after four (or more, if you’re lucky) years on a college campus, there are certain theme parties that just get old. Really old. Wrinkly, saggy skin old. They’re cliche, they’re annoying, they’re the ones you go to freshman year and, if you’re smart, you never go to again.
So pack up the slutty pencil skirts and white wife beaters, people, because here are 9 theme parties you won’t be indulging in any time soon. (Editor’s Note: That is until you graduate and crave a crazy college party to take you back to the glory days. Sigh.) Read More »

Super Bowl detox is now in effect. I won’t tempt you with my cheesecake bar recipe or my cheeseburger pie casserole this week. But one of our lovely commenters last week had a great idea: all day stew! This week we’ll look at a veggie-based stew that you can savor slowly and that will keep you full all day (sans chocolate).
Featured ingredients:
Acorn squash: This little bugger is loaded with Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C. Many studies suggest is also has anti-cancer properties, not to mention its rich texture and savory flavor make it seem way too tasty to be healthy.
Chickpeas: Sure, they taste amazing ground up as hummus, but chickpeas don’t have to be pulverized to be appreciated. They are loaded with protein and fiber while being low-fat.

So if you haven’t heard by now, I am in the latest issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine on page 36! I did an advertorial for Olay on three of their skincare products, and I’m going to be doing a more in depth review right here on CC Beauty Live! I don’t usually have a ton of success with drug store brand skin care lines, but Olay has definitely made me a believer. I loved the products they sent me, and I hope you do too!
Olay sent me their Pore Minimizing Cleanser & Scrub’s 2-in-1 Foaming Formula, the Daily Facials Deep Cleansing Dual-Textured Cloths, and the Shine Control Lathering Cleanser. All of the products are gentle enough to use every day, although you can use their Lathering Cleanser as more of a mask every few days. I even ran out of the cleansing cloths because I used them so often!
I really enjoyed this stuff (almost as I enjoyed seeing my face in my favorite magazine!), so watch this vid to find out why! Read More »
[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. Last month Charlotte gave up coffee. This month, Melissa's going to stop her late night snacking. Can she do it!? Could you?]
It’s one week in. And my late-night self is hungry. Really hungry. Ugh.
The college atmosphere definitely makes it really difficult to complete this challenge. I definitely had a few nights that I caved, and when I caved, I caved badly. After a long day of sorority recruitment, all the girls ordered pizza at 11:30 p.m. Seeing how we had to be at the house for even longer after 11:30 to clean up, my starving self quickly forgot about my challenge and caved on a slice of pizza. Oops.
Another night, my roommates and I were thinking of our costume ideas for a themed social we were having this weekend. My costume involved making a dress out of candy (it looks AWESOME, by the way!), and when I had a little bit of candy left over, instead of looking the other way and remembering my challenge, I unwrapped those little chocolates like a little kid unwrapping presents on Christmas morning. Oops again. Read More »

Whatcha doin’ Sunday night?
You better not say “studying,” because we know that’s about as realistic as Heidi Montag having a successful singing career.
If you’re like us, you’ll be ordering in some Thai food, cracking a bottle slapping a bag of wine, and catching the Grammys. And if you’re already doing that anyway, why not do it with us?
OK, not actually with us – our NYC studio apartment is only big for so many people (read: 2…and that’s pushing it), but online with us. We’ll have our laptops out and will be live blogging the entire show, from Christina Aguilera to Eminem and everyone in between. As always, we’ll be unusually cruel to the fashion train-wrecks and drooling over dapper dudes in suits (with guitars!!).
The show starts at 8 p.m. EST/PST on CBS, so DVR the Kardashians, grab your laptop (or iPad, lucky biatch) and watch with us.
Oh, and if you wanna join in and voice your own opinion (on whatever crazy sh*t Gaga is wearing, to celebrate a successful Christina performance, or when Kanye inevitably does/says something stupid), just hop on Twitter and either Tweet @cclive blog or include the hashtag #GrammysCC and you can really join the party.
See ya tomorrow night!
I’m going to be up front and honest with ya’ll. I’m the single girl who hates Valentine’s Day solely because I am single. I’m not going to try to deny it, I’m not going to go ahead and be all “why can’t single girls just love themselves on Valentine’s Day!?” I am going to be loud and proud about my haste during the “holiday.” I am going to admit how I go into Target, touch all of the red hearts, hold a dark chocolate box against my chest, and restrain myself from pulling all of the pedals off the soft roses conveniently placed near the peanut butter in the grocery store.
Being single on Valentine’s Day is not fun. Hallmark doesn’t want it to be, all of the couples on the planet don’t want it to be, and those big teddy bears staring at you buying the 2nd Season of Gossip Girl to consume your evening DEFINITELY don’t want it to be. As much as we single chicks try to make it better, constantly letting the thoughts run silk blankets all over our minds (“You’ll have someone next year, you’re beautiful, you’re the best!”) and letting honey Teddy Grahams absorb the sadness – we can’t. The pity party must be thrown. And the party must go on.
However, like a sad graduation party, there are ways you can be there for yourself and make it better. And I’m not talking about getting hammered on the booze in your parents’ liquor cabinet. You wanna make it out of this day without self-loathing and 5 extra pounds on your thighs unscathed? Listen up: Read More »
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m a history buff. I love reading historical biographies and learning all I can about times long gone. However, historical fiction is a genre I’ve barely scratched the surface of. I just don’t find myself particularly drawn to historical fiction books, but I may soon be changing my tune thanks to “The Midwife of Venice.”
The novel is set in 16th century Venice and features Hannah Levi, a notoriously skilled, Jewish midwife, as our main character. Hannah lives in Ghetto Nuevo, the Jewish ghetto in Venice. One evening, she is approached by a Christian count to assist in his wife’s delivery. He must bear an heir soon or else his entire inheritance will be lost to his two brothers. Hannah initially turns him down; after all, it is illegal for Jews to supply medical assistance to Christians. Her rabbi is also fierce in discouraging Hannah – if the birth goes awry, the whole ghetto will be persecuted. Hannah demands two hundred ducats as her fee, thinking that the man wouldn’t possibly agree, but he does.
She realizes that she cannot pass up an opportunity such as this, especially when the sum will be enough to free her husband, Isaac, from slavery in Malta. Hannah agrees to assist and is quickly taken to the Conte’s palace. Meanwhile, Issac is in Malta and being sold into slavery. Luckily, he manages to convince his master to let him sell his writing skills in the market. You see, in those times it was rare to be able to read and write and a slave with those commodities was a good purchase. Isaac keeps himself alive and away from the harsh labor of working the ports, all while trying to arrange for his escape from Malta and back to Hannah.

[The following is a guest post by our BFFs at CollegeFashion.net. Sigh. What would we do without them!?]
It’s almost spring, which means it’s the perfect time to try out a new fragrance! There’s so many different, amazing perfumes out there that it can be pretty challenging to find one that suits you. Never fear – we have tons of tips to make your search easier!
Before You Begin: 3 Tips to Help Your Search
1. Decide whether you want a “signature scent” or different scents for different occasions.
Some people like the idea of having a “signature scent”; others prefer different perfumes for different moods or occasions, and you need to decide which camp you’re in.
Having a signature scent can be fun; I wore a particular perfume every day for about a year, and my friends came to associate the smell with me. It can get boring though, as there are so many great scents out there and not every perfume is suited to every occasion – some of my favorite “nighttime scents” are ones I’d feel ridiculous wearing during the day because they’re so heavy and attention-grabbing.
If you decide to buy different scents for different occasions, keep this in mind: Heavier scents are more appropriate for the outdoors or nighttime, while lighter scents are better suited for places like work or school. If you want a signature scent, look for something that will transition well between different scenarios. Read More »
