Put This on Your iPod: AFI’s The Art of Drowning

[Sarabeth here, back with some more jams to add to your iTunes library! Every Wednesday, I'm bringing you music suggestions - could be something new, old, hugely popular or fairly unknown -  to awesome-ify your  collection.]

This week, I’m in nostalgia/angry mode. Angry because my Dbag of an ex-boyfriend has decided to try to start calling me again (barf). Nostalgic because when I’m trying to blow off steam, I tend to go into organization mode and this time around, my music collection got my attention. While re-labeling my iTunes collection I came across an old favorite album of mine: AFI’s ‘The Art of Drowning.’ It immediately took me back to my punk rocker days in middle school. The days I would trick myself out in Hot Topic clothes from head to toe before my town even got one. Embarrassing, yes. But while my fashion sense wasn’t top notch, I did have good taste in music as a 12-year-old.

About the Band:
AFI, or A Fire Inside, started back in 1991 in California and currently consists of Davey Havok, Adam Carson, Hunter Burgan, and Jade Puget. They formed when the members were all in high school, but they disbanded when they went off to separate colleges. After reuniting for a live performance, they all decided to drop out of college to make AFI a full time thing. Read More »

In Our Makeup Bag: Clarins Instant Smooth Self Tanning

What It Is:
Clarins Instant Smooth Self Tanning Primer

Why This Should Be in Your Bag:
Maintaining a glowy complexion during the dreary winter months can be darn right difficult! If you’re like me, you’ve been scared silly of tanning beds (and if you’re not scared, read this) and have tried a couple self-tanners with less than pleasing (ahem, orange) results.

Clarins takes their cult-fave, Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch Primer, and kicks it up a notch by adding self-tanning pigments. Here it is, straight from Clarins: The silky, lightweight mousse melts into the skin, for quick and ultra-easy application. Lines and enlarged pores are instantly smoothed away, the complexion is luminous and later develops a subtle healthy glow. With regular application, the tan intensifies, but always with a subtle, natural-looking color result.” Read More »

This Post-Grad Life: I Have Invisible Friends

[Life after college is different for every single grad. While some might be going to grad school, others enter the real world in attempts to make their dreams come true pay off their student loans. We've been following Charlsie on her post-grad journey since September, but now it's time to check see what someone else's post-grad life brings. And apparently what it brings is a quarter-life crisis. (But don't worry - Charlsie will still be writing!) So ladies, allow me to introduce you to Brittany and her tumultuous life after college.]

Pre-grad text conversation:
“===D hahaha im druInk”
“shut Up me 2! hehee”

Post-grad text conversation:
“Wanna watch HGTV and eat a quesadilla with me after work?”
“I will be on your couch waiting for you. Whoa, I almost typed I will be waiting on your cooch, eating for you.”

Basically, sober thoughts come in disappointing packages.  And the packaging runs small.  That makes communicating with friends post-college even more difficult.

Back in the days of making unlimited bad decisions and opting out of doing anything productive (read: college) I would spend valuable time with my friends grilling Texas toast on our George Foreman, laughing with Joel McHale on ‘The Soup,’ and spending four hours a night putting on our whore faces to Britney Spears’ ‘The Hook Up’ on repeat.  Having friends was so effortless. Spending time with them was easier than spending time with myself. Read More »

The 50 Most Popular Men on the Web (According to Google) 2010

http://collegecandy.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/picture-113-1.jpg?w=590&h=284

How many times a week a day do you Google yourself? An embarrassing amount, right? Almost as embarrassing as the amount of time I spend diagnosing myself with fatal diseases on WebMD. But when we’re not googling our own name and Facebook stalking our frenemies, we’re googling (and ogling) guys. Like, a lot. So we wanted to do a totally scientific study (please note that we did this research while also doing research on the effects of Four Loko on a professional work day) on the most googled guys on the internet. And we were SHOCKED by the results. Like apparently no one else is as into Barry Manilow as I am. But a lot of people are really into Ne-Yo. Who knew?! Now you do!

5 Days Every College Girl Would Want to Relive

When most people think of Groundhog Day, they probably picture a medium sized rodent climbing out of a hole in an attempt to determine whether we’re going to have an early spring, or if the mountains of snow are just going to keep on coming. But when we think of Groundhog Day, we think of Bill Murray.

You know, Groundhog Day. The movie. You’re with me? Right. Well in Groundhog Day Murray gets to relive the same day over and over again, Groundhog Day, which wasn’t so great for him because he kept messing everything up. But still, we’re a little bit jealous. There are plenty of days in college we’d love to live over and over and over again, and never change a thing. (Editor’s Note: Or the whole thing? Please?)

Here are our top 5:

1. Your 21st Birthday. This is it. The day you’ve been waiting for. The day you take your first legal drink. The day that’s all about you. An excuse to splurge on a fabulous new, totally 21 outfit. Silly hats. Sashes. Maybe even a tiara to go with that sparkly dress? Free shots. Lots and lots of liquor. And the perfect excuse to go up to a boy and ask him if he’ll buy you a drink. The perfect excuse to do whatever you want, whenever you want to. Because nothing is a better excuse for drunken bar top dancing than “It’s my 21st birthday!” It should be noted though, powers that be, that we want to relive our 21st birthdays, not the morning after hangovers. Web Spy: Bloglovin

[There are over 100 million sites on the Internet. 100 million! You might think you know about all the important ones (CollegeCandy, Gmail, Google, Facebook…), but there are thousands of other sweet sites out there (like We Are Hunted, Paper Back Swap and Stingy Campus) and more showing up every day! We get it – it’s not easy or fun sifting through the crap and porn to find those gems, so we’re gonna bring the gems to you. Just sit back, kick up those feet and allow us to introduce you to the diamonds in the internet rough.]

I like reading blogs, but sometimes it can be really obnoxious to log on to each site separately (especially when it’s not updated very often) and to try to remember web addresses.

I wanted to introduce all of you to Bloglovin, my new obsession. It’s helps simplify my blog reading by allowing me to read all blogs in one place (like Google Reader), but takes it further by helping keep track of which ones you’ve already read and presenting it all in a simple, clean, reader-friendly interface.

Who Deserves the OfficeMax Desk Makeover? VOTE NOW.

We’ve teamed up with our favorite organizing guru Peter Walsh and OfficeMax to give one lucky CollegeCandy fan an entirely new workspace. As in a new desk, message board, file tray, cord management station, portable inbox station, expanding files, writing board, notebooks, letter tray, ottoman with hanging files inside, and more!

Yeah it’s a lot — I’m out of breath just typing it!

Last week we invited people to upload their messiest desk pictures to our Facebook fan page to prove to us why they deserved to win this awesome prize. And even though our desks are filled with old wrappers, crumb-filled keyboards, and coffee stains, you guys managed to out-do us. We’ve chosen the 5 MESSIEST desks from all the entries and now we’re asking you to help us pick a winner by voting for the person who NEEDS the new workspace the most.

Check out the pictures below, then place your vote at the bottom! The contest ends this Friday, February 4th, so don’t forget to vote! Read More »

Greek Speak: What’s With All The Negativity?

Hazing. It’s a touchy subject, and by “touchy” I mean one that we never want to touch on… or ever be a part of. I happen to come from a very anti-hazing chapter and university, both of which take ample precautions to eliminate hazing. Yet at colleges across the country, hazing still exists (and goes too far). And it exists in student groups and organizations that don’t have Greek letters in their names.

Why, then, are sorority and fraternity incidents the ones that are always making national news?

Most recently, two fraternities and one sorority at George Washington University were stripped of their houses on campus for hazing and underage drinking incidents. And of course, the story made it into the Washington Post. And this wasn’t the first time that’s happened.

In fact, it seems to me that the only time hazing stories get any media attention, they involve the Greek community. (It also seems that the only time the Greek community gets any media attention it’s for hazing, but that’s a whole different issue.) Should those who break the rules (and the law!) be punished for their actions? Absolutely. Should those who stand by and let it happen be punished too? Yes. But we all know that it’s not just the frat boys and sorority girls who partake in hazing rituals. Read More »
