Summer Internship vs. Part-Time Job – Making the Most of Your Summer Break

The following post is written by Brian Willett from UNC-Chapel Hill, one of our many friends at Uloop, a student powered marketplace. Read more great posts in their blog.

Ask any student what the best part about school is, and you’ll most likely get the same answer – summer vacation. The carefree days of summer make all of the homework and pop quizzes bearable and give students something to look forward to during April showers.

Because summer is so precious to students, making the most of every moment of the two or three month respite is crucial. So when it comes to filling the time between fun and games, a fierce debate rages over which is better – a summer internship or a part-time job. Though many assume the only point of contention is filling one’s resume versus filling one’s wallet, there’s more to the question than that. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Kim Kardashian Makes Sexy Simple

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (like the queen of shabby chic, Vanessa Hudgens) are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you an spend way less...and save the rest for Margarita Mondays.]

After alternating between actively hating and actively ignoring Kim Kardashian’s status as a celebrity for years, I recently decided to let it go and just embrace it. Though I find her by far the least interesting of the adult Kardashian sisters, I can’t help but be in awe by how she stole Paris’s hustle, perfected it, and progressively gets more relevant as time goes on.

How is that possible?

I could probably wrack my brain and crank out a seriously amazing sociology paper on the phenomenon of Kim Kardashian and how she parlayed having a big butt and a sex tape into a legitimate, relatively long-lasting career (if this isn’t a sign of success, I don’t know what is), but I’d much rather talk about her banging sense of style. Kim is all about trendy pieces that accentuate her killer body. It seems like a solid 99 percent of her wardrobe is black, so her aesthetic always looks sleek and sophisticated. Recently, she hit the red carpet in an ensemble that I immediately fell head over heels for, and I hope you will too! Read More »

Glee-cap: I’m Talking About Everybody Gettin’ Crunk, Crunk

Another week, another round of criticism for the creators of Glee. So what’s the problemo this time around? Too many guest stars? Exploitation of the young cast? Matthew Morrison’s poor attempts at rap?

No, nope and thank god, no.
This week, it’s all about the controversial storyline. (Because, you know, drinking is way more controversial than the teen pregnancy from last season….)

This week’s episode caused quite a buzz (tee hee) before it even aired:  entitled “Blame it On The Alcohol,” this week’s installment featured its high school-aged characters participating in illegal drinking.  Which, might I add, was sorta hilarious. But that’s not the point. I understand the origin of these concerns.  Glee does have a very young fan base, and surely some of its viewers are impressionable – like, “Hey! Brittany’s drinking!  I want to drink, too!”

But Glee is nothing if not incredibly relevant and always manages to turn everything into a very well-packaged and expertly delivered lesson.  The truth is, very few people wait until they turn twenty-one to start drinking and that’s not going to change anytime soon, whether or not this issue is given media attention. Web Spy: When Parents Text

[There are over 100 million sites on the Internet. 100 million! You might think you know about all the important ones (CollegeCandy, Gmail, Google, Facebook…), but there are thousands of other sweet sites out there (like BlogLovin, Exercise TV and Any New Books?) and more showing up every day! We get it – it’s not easy or fun sifting through the crap and porn to find those gems, so we’re gonna bring the gems to you. Just sit back, kick up those feet and allow us to introduce you to the diamonds in the internet rough.]

We all know parents aren’t exactly pros when it comes to dealing with new technology. It took my mom two years to learn how to watch a recorded show off the DVR (I’m pretty sure she still doesn’t know how to actually record anything), and my dad constantly refers to Facebook as “Face-Space”. I’m actually pretty amazed that either of them even knows how to send a text!

That’s why I’ve been loving the site When Parents Text lately — it’s sort of like Texts From Last Night, but instead of random messages about last night’s escapades, each post features a text sent from a reader’s parent (or sometimes a grandparent). They’re all hilarious and filled with the awkward lack of technological and social knowledge that all parents possess. Some of my favorites: “twitter? thats the same thing as quidditch right?” and “Hi leah. Am at a friend’s and he let me get face book. Would you like to be my friend? Dad xoxo” and “Please dont mention on facebook or to your friends we are gone. Do not want to get robbed. Xoxo.”

11 Things You Shouldn’t Bring With You on Spring Break

Forgot the typical packing lists – most of us already know what we need to take with us on vacation (Camera? Check! Sandals? Check! Cute sundress? Already packed five!).

Here’s a look at 11 things you should definitely leave at home this Spring Break. Just think, with all the space you’ll be saving in your suitcase you will have room for five more sundresses (!!)… and that donkey pinata you will inevitably be bringing home with you. Read More »

8 Under $20: Tribal Jewelry

Along with bold, bright bags and loose-fitting tops, tribal-themed accessories and clothing, particularly Aztec-inspired items, are going to be everywhere this spring. Personally, I’m a big fan of this trend in jewelry – the bright colors and interesting patterns and shapes create bold statement pieces that are as fun to wear as they are to look at.

These styles look particularly great with the bright hues and breezy shapes of summer clothing, but you might want to think about starting to incorporate some pieces now. Many stores are already carrying great tribal-themed jewelry, and it’s just the pick-me-up our wardrobes need as we suffer through another 6 weeks of the dull grays and blacks of winter-wear. Even more, you can get a lot of it for less than $20, like all the pieces shown here! Read More »

Stand Up, Speak Out: The College Girl’s Guide to Activism

A lot is happening in the world right now. Egypt said no more to their President, and since then, other countries such as Bahrain, Libya, Yemen, Iran, Kuwait, Algeria, and Dijbouti have actively started seeking change from their governments. Tons of stuff is happening back in the United States too. There are the Wisconsin protests rising up against the newly elected governor’s budget, the House voting to ban federal funding to Planned Parenthood, possible threats to cut funding for programs like Americorps, and of course, we’re still in a terrible economic recession.

As college students and young women, we should be aware of what’s going on around us. For example, the federal funding to Planned Parenthood could hurt women across the country and prevent us from having affordable birth control options (such as the Pill and IUDs) and annual health screenings. Sometimes sitting around doesn’t seem good enough, but people often say “I’d get involved, but I don’t know how.” Consider this your friendly college guide to activism so you can get involved:

Utilize Facebook and other social media platforms: The world of social media is meant to be an extension of your personality, so why not use it to share what you believe in? Passionate about animal rights — don’t be afraid to ‘Like’ PETA or post a video about puppy mills. Are you upset that funding was cut in your home state for education? Post an article about it on your blog — use it to start a dialogue. Tweet about what’s on your mind. Send out Facebook event invites for club meetings about campus fundraising or for the Gay/Straight alliance you just joined.

Register to vote: This is straightforward and simple. By registering to vote, even if elections are right around the corner, you are taking a proactive step to say, “Hey, I want to voice my opinion.” You can register to vote here.

He Said/She Said: Making it Official

[He Said/She Said is a new series designed to help all our wonderfully confused readers figure out what he’s really thinking. So every week we’ll be throwing out a topic for debate…and unlike our fave dude, these guys won’t be sugar coating anything for you. But before you jump into their heads (which seriously will make you feel like you need to shower), check out what we think!]

I’m not a crazy person. On the contrary, I like to think that I’m quite level-headed in all aspects of my life. I tend to think things through and really try to understand all perspectives in a situation before I say or do anything. And that’s probably why all of my friends come to me for advice; they trust what I have to say and know I’ll be objective.

Of course, there is always an exception to that rule.
And of course that exception has to do with guys.

There’s something about liking a guy that can make even the sanest girl go crazy. And I’m not talking “show up at his house in the middle of the night and profess my love outside his window” sorta crazy. I’m referring to the more internal diagnosis: thinking about him all the time, analyzing every single interaction you’ve ever had with him, going to every person you know and asking them to analyze every single interaction you’ve ever had with him, carrying your phone with you everywhere you go just in case he calls or texts, or checking your email in the middle of the night to see if he sent you a Facebook message.

And what drives a girl to such a low level on the pathetic scale?

The not knowing. Read More »
