The Recipe for a Perfect St. Patrick’s Day

With St. Patrick’s day just around the corner it’s important to start laying out the necessities. I mean you need to pick the right bars, the right outfit, the right crowd to hang out with. And not to mention, if you want to last all day, lay out some sort of day drinking plan. But have no fear, because your dear ol’ Irish pals at O’CollegeCandy always have your best interests at heart when it comes to a good party and plan on taking care of you!

So here’s our list of everything you need to have a St. Patrick’s Day that will make St. Patrick (whoever he was) proud.

The Perfect Outfit:
One of the most important things to remember about St. Patrick’s day is that there can be a thing as having too much green. You are not in grade school; it’s not cute to put your hair in braids and sprinkle it with green glitter. A little bit of green can go a long way, but there are a few things you should stay away from…well two in particular, green nails and green lips.

The perfect way to spice up your outfit is by adding hints of green, a green cardigan, a muted green dress with a black sweater over it, a green tank with your favorite jeans (maybe find a sequined one for some wow). There are tons of choices out there; pick one of these, and you’ll be good to go! Read More »

Google Docs vs. Microsoft Office: What’s Best for College Students?

The following post is written by Josh Olson from UNC, one of our many friends at Uloop, a student powered marketplace. Read more great posts in their blog.

Once upon a time, Google was only a search engine company. But today they Google dabbles in everything from email to academic databasing. And, in a direct swipe at Microsoft, Google released a free word processing program called Google Docs in 2007. It is what internet gurus call “cloud-based,” which means your data is stored on the internet, rather than on your computer. Not only does this mean who can save a chunk of change on word processing software, it also means you can access your documents from any computer.

But is Google Docs a viable alternative to Microsoft Office? Is it really worth it for college students? Here’s the scoop.

Advantages:

1. It’s free. Office can cost $150, if not more.

2. You can access your docs from any computer connected to the internet. So if your computer has caught a bug or if you just don’t feel like schlepping your computer to campus and would rather use the school’s computers, Google Docs severs the chains to your local device. This can be very convenient. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Lake Bell is Cropped and Cute

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (or trying-to-come-back celebrities, like J-Lo) are spending $5,000 and more on an ensemble, you an spend way less...and save the rest for Margarita Mondays.]

Lake Bell isn’t exactly an A-list actress, although she has been working steadily for almost a decade (most recently, you may have seen her being hilarious in No Strings Attached). However, she is definitely A-list in the fashion world, as her red carpet style has been garnering her tons of accolades for the past few years. She has a reputation for having a quirky style that is different from a lot of other starlets around her age. And I like quirky.

I also like cheap, which works out well for me, because Lake’s uniquely gorgeous outfit is easy to create on my meager college budget. Read More »

Glee-cap: Taking ‘The Road Less Traveled’ All The Way To Regionals

Thankfully, Rachel's performance was better than the dress/pant/boot combo.

This week’s episode of Glee was downright ORIGINAL.  And no, I’m not talking about the New Directions and their decision to unleash their inner Joni Mitchells by writing original songs for Regionals – I’m talking about the fact that this episode opened with a musical number.  As usual, Blaine led the Warblers in a note-perfect cover of a Top 40 song – but this time was a little different, mostly because someone dared to defy the ironclad hierarchy that the Warblers so famously employ.  Kurt called Blaine out on taking all of the group’s solos for himself.

It’s clear that The Warblers are headed for a much-needed change.  Perhaps the most obvious symbol for this change is the death of Pavorotti, their mascot.  To commemorate his life, Kurt dons a fabulous all-black outfit (I’m pretty sure he was wearing an epaulet.  And I’m pretty sure I want one now.)  and does a version of the Beatles classic “Blackbird.”  Kurt’s performance is imperfect, loosely interpreted, and emotionally invested, and it represents the direction the Warblers need to take in their performances if they want a chance at taking Regionals.

Back at home base (aka McKinley High), Rachel had written another uninspired ballad.  Finn, who is apparently the only person who cares enough to listen to her songwriting attempts (and the only person she cares to take any advice from) tells her that second attempt is still not there – she needs to dig deeper, be more emotional to really strike songwriting gold.    It seems like Rachel will never get the chance to debut her original material – until Mr. Schuester tells the club that they’re no longer allowed to perform “Sing,” the anthem they had been rehearsing.  The kids decide to put their heads together to come up with an all-new anthem to perform instead.  Quinn points out that the New Directions are best when they push themselves, do something different, and show some heart – and for once, I actually agree with her.  Her voice is still annoying as all hell, though.

Web Spy: RescueTime

[There are over 100 million sites on the Internet. 100 million! You might think you know about all the important ones (CollegeCandy, Gmail, Google, Facebook…), but there are thousands of other sweet sites out there (like When Parents Text, College Daybreak and iConcertCal) and more showing up every day! We get it – it’s not easy or fun sifting through the crap and porn to find those gems, so we’re gonna bring the gems to you. Just sit back, kick up those feet and allow us to introduce you to the diamonds in the internet rough.]

It’s a terrible habit of nearly every college student: procrastination. I procrastinate as long as I absolutely can, sometimes even opting to vacuum the entire apartment and do the dishes instead of sitting down to do what I have to do. And then when I do finally start studying or writing a paper, I have a hard time staying focused.

Yes, as great as the internet is at keeping us amused, connected, and informed, it’s a major source of distraction that gets in the way of me doing, well, anything. At all. Ever.

I’m sick of wasting all my time, but I don’t have a lot of willpower to keep me off of Zappos.com and on the actual task at hand. That’s why I’m glad I’ve discovered RescueTime. RescueTime is a web-based tool that aims to help you make better use of your time.

Greek Speak: It’s Spring Break, Baby!

So it’s Spring Break and I only have two words: hell yes. Here are the top 10 ways Greeks keep it, well, Greek on vacation.

1.     More flags than the Olympics – You all know what I’m talking about… Greeks are extremely territorial, and this doesn’t stop on Spring Break. Those giant, obnoxious flags you see out on the beach (but can barely make out in your drunken state) are a point of pride for the typical frat-star.

2. Throw what you know – Confused by sorority girls throwing mystery gang signs on the beach for a picture? Don’t be. Fear not, you precious little GDI – sorority girls across the country this week are going on Spring Break, and will undoubtedly scrunch together, pose in the “sorority squat” position, and throw up their sorority letters with their hands. Harmless, I promise.

3. When mixing pastel polos, Sperry’s and board shorts becomes acceptable – By definition? The ultimate frat-star… and grounds to make any sorority girl cringe. But unfortunately, you are still going to see it. A lot of it. It’s frat boy beach fashion at it’s finest, and it’s not going anywhere. Brace yourself. Read More »

8 Under $20: St. Patrick’s Day

I’ve always been a big fan of St. Patrick’s Day, and not just because I’m Irish. There’s so much about it to love: beer, Irish whiskey, corned beef and cabbage, parades, and just the general merry feel to the whole day. Plus, green has always been one of my favorite colors, so seeing it everywhere for a day just puts me in a good mood.

Dressing for St. Patrick’s Day can be fun, but can often times border on tacky. Luckily, there are lots of great green clothing items out there that are festive enough to keep you from getting pinched but you can wear long after St. Patrick’s Day is over! What’s even better, all of these pieces are less than $20 — and there’s not a shamrock in sight! Read More »

Celebrities Have Dreams, Too

So you know how celebs are always telling us that they’re just like you and me, that underneath their cool clothes and their fancy cars and their mansions, they’re just normal people? Well, it turns out they weren’t lying. It turns out they have unachievable dreams too. While we spend our time wishing we could be more like them, certain celebs are wishing and waiting for the day they’ll get to play their idols. Some of them have a thing for comic book heroes. Others prefer remakes or Tim Burton movies.  And some well, some are just weird.

Want to know who Robert Pattinson wishes he could play? (I always thought he was playing his dream role!) What about Channing Tatum (It’s hot.)  Justin Bieber? (It’s disturbing.)  Bradley Cooper? (It’s swoon worthy.) How about Jennifer Garner or Nicki Minaj?
