Single Girl Society: Sometimes A Hookup is Just A Hookup

Lesson 14: Sometimes a hookup is just a hookup.

So after a few too many neon blue shots, you’ve let yourself throw caution to the wind and you’ve found yourself in a pretty disconcerting position with your crush or even worse, a guy friend. In the heat of the moment, you’ve shared a steamy night with a guy that’s got you reelin’ for more, not just physically but emotionally, too.

You start to let your mind wander all of the places you’d never let it before, maybe because he was always just a good friend or because you finally got some kind of response from the crush you’ve had for what feels like forever now. While you’re probably not picking up bridal magazines, unleashing all your crazy, you can’t help but wonder what the two of you could be like together, even if you already know it could never work out with him.

Blame it on the female tendency to attach emotion to sexual activity, but there are just some of us girls out there, who cant help but overthink something as primal and physical as hooking up. No need to be ashamed – after all, it’s only natural! And why shouldn’t you connect sexual activity to emotion? For many girls, sex is a deeply personal thing. Read More »

Jane Eyre and 5 High School Reads to Revisit

With devices like the eReader, Kindle and iPad 2 at our fingertips, reading is supposed to be easier than ever, despite the slow extinction of the printed (and pricey) paperback. But try walking into a bookstore for new novels – you’ll find the Best Sellers’ shelves covered in leftovers of celebrity franchises, from Conrad and Kardashian to Bieber’s biography! Sure, we finally have the convenient medium to encourage more frequent reading, but are we running out of leisurely literature too fast these days?

I think it’s time to turn back to the assignments of our high school English classes, the novels taught every year not only to prepare us for those Advanced Placement tests, but also to enlighten us through universal themes and lessons before we went off to college.  Obviously, these stories have withstood the test of time over and over again: according to Focus Features, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre has been adapted into 20 silent films, 27 “talkies” (for theater and television), 23 radio dramas, 48 plays and 8 musicals – and today marks the premiere of Jane Eyre, the film version starring Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, The Kids Are Alright), Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds, 300) and Jamie Bell (The Eagle, Jumper).

The dynamic plot revolving around a bold governess and her mysterious employer is simultaneously an epic love story, a Gothic tale and a piece of social commentary. So in honor of Jane Eyre’s rebirth to a new generation, let’s resurrect some of the narratives we thought used to bore us to death. Here are five more high school books worth a reread in college: Read More »

Budget Stylista: Get Bright With Yo Bad Self

Just when we were getting used to the black and grays that fall brought us, the fashion gods decided to to have a fling with brights. From adorable totes to patent pumps, sunglasses to accessories, you can find just about every shade of ROY.G.BIV. (What up, 6th grade science class! Bet you never thought you’d hear ROY.G.BIV again, did you?!)

And for a new twist, colored bottoms are back. I knew I should have hung on to my bright blue capris from the Gap circa the late ’90s. (Remember those commercials where they were all dancing in tons of bright colored bottoms?!)

Sorry. Having some nostalgia moments up in here. Reeling it in…

This spring is all about bright bottoms, and mixing and matching big, bold colors. I love pairing two complementary colors together – think bright blue and orange, or pink and green. It just makes everything more exciting.

If mixing colors is intimidating, stick with a colorful bottom and a neutral top and shoe. The key when mixing colors is to always keep at least one element neutral. So if you’re wearing a coral top and a blue skirt, go with a neutral bag and skin tone shoe. If you’re doing a colorful shoe and pant, or colorful belt and pant, keep the rest toned down.

Not sure where to start? Here are three foolproof looks that will brighten your mood and your wardrobe!

WTF Friday: Talk About Daddy Issues

So when I saw the title “crazy dance party with Dad,” I thought it would be a nice, cute, little video. I did not think it would resemble footage from I can only assume is an upcoming Maury Povich special all about daddy/daughter combos who make everyone else feel icky inside. I mean the video features a poor man’s poorer Kid Rock, an innocent child, and a tween who is “way too cool” to join in on the fun. All the ingredients needed to completely ruin this child’s chance of ever having a healthy relationship.

For goodness sake, the dad’s wearing wang-exposing sweatpants. Help me understand.

11 Hotties Who Should Be Single (In Honor Of JT’s Breakup)

Yesterday I tripped up some stairs. Yes up. That’s okay, though, because it was still the best day ever. As I hobbled back home and onto my couch, the sweet sound of gossip news on E! informed me that my childhood love, Justin Timberlake was finally, and truly single. Score!

After jumping around shrieking for a few minutes, the whole sitch got me thinking: why are so many Hollywood hotties tied down? Seriously, what’s up with that? OK, I fully realize that I won’t ever meet anyone of these gorgeous gentlemen out at the grocery store and make them fall madly in love with me, but it makes it easier to have naked dreams about drool over them if I think I might possibly have a chance. I mean, it’s hard to get hot and bothered about J. Timberlake when you know he’s doin’ the horizontal mambo with someone far hotter than you else.

But not anymore!

So in the spirit of a happy Friday, here are our favorite not-single-celebrity crushes who need to take a hint from JTim and Ryan Reynolds and sever those relationship ties!

Friday Faves: Brazilian Waxing = Medieval Torture?

My roomie once said, in a conversation that I very much regret missing, “You know, I could see why you would trim your bush if it got a little out of hand…but I don’t know why the hell you would cut the whole thing down. It just makes your lawn look funny!” And, no, we were not talking about horticulture.

Au naturale doesn’t really seem to be the method of style in female nether regions. It supposedly looks neater when it’s taken care of. I know a lot of girls who keep themselves trimmed, and quite a few who wax. It’s easier than shaving, I’ve heard said. You don’t get the obnoxious bumps that you normally get when you shave that inevitably leads to impromptu itchy dances. Not to mention it’s a lot neater and it takes longer to grow back. I never really supported it; it didn’t even seem like it was worth the effort to me and I’m still not sure how I feel about men who want their women’s parts to look prepubescent.

Still, I’d heard so much…

And so, in another one of my infamously stupid ideas, I decided to get a full Brazilian wax last summer. For those who don’t know, there’s a difference between Brazilian waxes and bikini waxes. Bikini waxes are really more like a neat little trimming so that, as the name suggests, you can wear a bikini confidently. Brazilian waxes are when you get everything – EVERYTHING – waxed off. Mind you, no one was going to be seeing the result of this wax except for me. It was nothing but curiosity.

And yes, curiosity really does kill the cat. Warning: this gets a little graphic from here on.

Guys Who Rock: Don Mitchell

Boys, boys, boys. Here at CollegeCandy, we love them. A lot. And being that we have a lot of time on our hands to search for them on the web, we thought we’d use it to our advantage and yours and bring you a little eye candy that not only makes us drool but also tugs at our heartstrings. So here’s your chance to meet some of the most talented guys in the world…who rock. Like, for real. (They’re musicians, people.)

Name: Don Mitchell
Age: 27
Location: Northampton, MA
Type of Music: Rock/Classical/Folk
Why He Rocks: He’s quirky, funny, and he’s in a band that has a unique sound that you won’t be able to stop listening to.

How old were you when you started singing and playing the guitar?
I started singing in a children’s choir and started playing the guitar when I was thirteen or fourteen.

Was being in a band something that you had always planned on doing as a career?
I didn’t really have a plan completely formulated, but I certainly didn’t think that I would ever be in a band. I did think that it would be great to be involved with music but I didn’t know what form that might take. It ended up being a pretty cool opportunity because some of the guys had been in a previous band together during college. Afterward it just kind of came around at the right time that I was considering what to do next and was applying for jobs and thinking about grad school and then I sort of went and visited a couple of the guys and they were talking about how they were forming this band. It ended up working out that we got along well and wrote good songs together.

What is Darlingside all about and what inspired the unique style of music the band plays?
I think our unique sound partly comes from all of the instruments that we happen to play. When you’re writing a rock song or a pop song and you want to use cello and mandolin and violin, and some crazy other instruments that we throw in occasionally too, it just automatically changes the sound. I think the other thing that’s pretty different about our band is that we all can sing, so we write a lot of things from the prospective of a singing group. We all have pretty different background from some classical, jazz, and folk, and we kind of bring it all together. We follow whatever style we’re interested in at a given moment. Read More »
