Ask a Dude: Am I a Trophy Girlfriend?

Dude,

I am dating this guy who everyone else thinks is this amazing guy. And I guess from what they see, he is pretty amazing. He is constantly telling me how beautiful I am, how wonderful I am, and how lucky he is. Now, that’s all great and sh*t, but I guess I should tell you a bit more…

He does that stuff all the time. Treats me nicely. Takes me on dates. Cuddles with me. Blah blah blah. BUTTTTTT, there’s this other side to him that no one knows about except me.

He does NOT invite me to hang with him and his friends… ever. He never wants me around them. It’s not like his friends are drug dealing murderers, either. I’ve met a few of them and they’re great guys! Sometimes I’ll call him and he’ll say, “Well I’m just over here at Josh’s. We’re having taco night! It’s so much fun!” And on the other line I’m waiting for him to invite me over. I like tacos, too!! One night I got frustrated waiting on him to invite me so I just went over. And it was so super awkward. He like latched onto me for dear life and made me feel like I had just crashed boys night. It’s not like I was the only girl there, though! Some of their friends who are girls were there, too.

Another thing – he doesn’t spend time with my friends either. If they are around, he says things to me like, “I wish it was just us, that’s all.” My roommate is my best friend and he makes her feel uncomfortable in her own home. It sucks. I don’t know why he’s acting like that.

It’s not like we’re having some secret relationship where he doesn’t want his friends to know we’re dating. He shows me off to everyone! I just feel like a trophy girlfriend. I feel like he sees only the surface and not me for who I really am. What do I say to this guy?? Am I overreacting?? Is this normal? Do guys do this all the time? What’s really going on here???

HELP.

Is Talent an Excuse for Bad Behavior?

Yeah, you smile with that puppy and hope that fixes your image.

As we all know all too well, back in 2009, Chris Brown assaulted his girlfriend and put a major halt on his career. Now, 2 years later, Rihanna has moved on… but Chris Brown has not.

Chris “beat her down” Brown made a huge mistake when he beat up Rihanna, not only professionally, but as a person. Now, two years later, Brown is not too thrilled that his “mishap” is still bringing him down. He claims he has made numerous public apologies, but still doesn’t feel like this “mishap” is going away. It should be noted, however, that throughout his so-called “apologies,” he blames other people for his negative image and failing career, never actually taking the blame himself. Whose fists were used in that fight, Chris? Just curious.

It’s a sad story. I mean, Chris Brown is incredibly talented. I even still find myself rocking out to Forever and No Air. But is his talent reason enough to not hold him accountable for what he did? Should we really be blamed for turning our backs on someone who did something so horrible just because he’s got a good voice and some sick dance moves?

The same question can be asked about John Galliano, head designer for Dior, who had a little (well, actually a freaking HUGE) “mishap” of his own. A video was leaked of Galliano being openly and aggressively anti-Semitic, which ultimately led to his dismissal from one of the most notable fashion houses in the world. His words offended many, including Natalie Portman who spoke out against him.

But surprisingly, people are taking his side, claiming “he was being theatrical” and that the hateful rant should not lead to the dismissal of such a talented visionary. Read More »

Put This on Your iPod: Matt and Kim’s Grand

[Sarabeth here, back with some more jams to add to your iTunes library! Every Wednesday, I'm bringing you music suggestions - could be something new, old, hugely popular or fairly unknown -  to awesome-ify your collection.]

Spring time is officially here in Austin, TX, and with that comes South by Southwest, only the biggest music/movie/tech conference ever. I may not have a badge, but I do have a massive schedule of free parties and concerts for the next 7 days. And that includes a free show from one of my favorite bands, Matt and Kim!

So this week I figured I’d spread the joy and share my love of these two with their second (and my personal favorite) album, Grand.

About the Band:
Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino have been rocking out since 2004, with Matt on keyboards and Kim on drums. They have a DIY attitude towards their music and do just about everything when it comes to putting out their albums. If they sound familiar, it’s because they’ve been featured on Community, Entourage, and several commercials. Read More »

In Our Makeup Bag: Harajuku Lovers “G of the Sea” Fragrance

What It Is:
Harajuku Lovers “G of the Sea” Fragrance

Why This Should Be in Your Bag:
Fragrance is a part of a beauty routine that I find many gals often overlook. They’re content to use the same old perfume that everyone has (for example, when I was 15, almost every girl at my school had Escada “Magnetism”) and not search for their own signature scent. Besides the fact that your perfume should be unique, scents will react differently to each person’s skin chemistry. This means that the perfume that smells great on your BFF may make you smell like a garbage dump. Okay, maybe not that severe, but you get the idea. With so many perfumes available, why not put in some effort and find your best scent?

Gwen Stefani has been on a rampage to build her empire since the early 2000′s, with the release of her clothing lines L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers. She quickly followed with her Harajuku Lovers fragrance line and is about to release a new edition, “G of the Sea”, inspired by a mermaid’s underwater adventures. The top notes are apple, lily and berry, followed by a floral mid note and a musky, wood base. (No, I’m not quite sure what that means, but it smells good!) Read More »

This Post Grad Life: To Be Passionate Or To Be Practical?

When I was a little girl and thought of growing up, I closed my eyes and saw a life full of prosperity. I saw a world where I could do what I loved most, play Barbies in my spare time, and make a lot of money being a veterinarian, curing boxes of adorable puppies on a daily basis.  Then when I turned thirteen and reality was a little clearer, Celine Dion proved to me I had the pipes to belt out ‘My Heart Will Go On’ until my heart (and those around me) would not go on any longer.  I knew that someday I would date Justin Timberlake because we were at the same place in our musical careers and we could understand each other.

When I graduated high school and Justin Timberlake started dating Cameron Diaz, I knew I had to pick an alternative life.  It took some time (and a few people cringing at the sound of my voice), but I soon realized I could not be the next pop artist. Instead, I would go to college and dig into its grab bag of opportunity.

I wanted to find out who and what I wanted to be.  And I had a four-year time crunch. Read More »

PETA’s Newest Ad Campaign is Another FAIL

PETA has been having some trouble getting their message across with their advertisements lately. It seems that their holier-than-thou messages keep getting lost in the “shock value” of their campaigns, with their latest series being the biggest fail of all:

“I’d rather get Ink than Mink” basically tells people to permanently alter their body, instead of, I don’t know…wearing cotton? Or just not wearing fur? Seems a little extreme. And by “extreme” I mean “an extreme FAIL.”

But this isn’t the first time PETA’s message has gotten lost in a sea of cleavage and butt crack; it actually happens more often than not. Below, PETA’s 10 biggest fails to date.

How to Beat the Economic Doldrums

The following post is written by Josh Olson from UNC, one of our many friends at Uloop, a student powered marketplace. Read more great posts in their blog.

Straight from the dorm onto the street. This might seem to be the fate threatening college students graduating in our current economic doldrums. But there may be hope. There are methods for making yourself more appealing to potential employers. There are ways to manicure your resume; and there’s always the internship option. But you already knew that.

Here are some somewhat less conventional ways to avoid those unemployment lines after graduation. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Jennifer Lopez Makes Plaid Glam

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (or faux-lebrities, like Kimmy K) are spending $5,000 and more on an ensemble, you an spend way less...and save the rest for Margarita Mondays.]

Jennifer Lopez has been one of my style icons for over a decade. As a supremely awkward adolescent girl, I used to watch her music videos and drool over her sexy, trendy, totally stunning outfits that she wore with the kind of confidence that I continue to marvel at to this day. After marriage, two kids, and a few colossally embarrassing career moves (Bennifer, anyone?), J Lo still oozes pure, unadulterated diva swagger. And I absolutely love her for it.

Recently, she showed up to an American Idol party dressed in a schoolgirl inspired outfit, abs bared and all. Had anyone else done this, everyone (myself included), would have written it off as another tacky crime against all things fashionable and chic. Yet somehow, when I saw this 41-year-old mother in this pretty blatantly ridiculous ensemble, I saw a regulation hottie wearing a really cool, funky, edgy outfit. Read More »

Glee-cap: Sexy Time Explosion

Before I get to this week’s Glee-cap, I’d like to point out something about myself:  I’m a little bit psychic.  I mean, if you’ve read my recap of last week’s alcohol-related episode (and if you haven’t, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?)  you’ll recall that I brought two nonalcoholic issues into my discussion of the episode:  the idea that teaching sexual abstinence may not be the best idea, and the idea that bisexuality is a hugely misunderstood concept.  This week, both of these issues came in to the forefront.

Really, I should have my own reality show or something. But I digress…

“Sexy” marked the return of two of our favorite guest stars: John Stamos and Gwyneth Palthrow. It also reintroduced us to Emma, who hasn’t had much screen time recently.  She’s taken over the celibacy club, which now includes only Rachel and Quinn.  Emma feels very strongly about the need for a celibacy club.  She’s obviously a proponent of abstinence-only sex ed (and life in general), which is incidentally something that Holly Holiday finds ridiculous and dangerous.  The kids at McKinley obviously need to be made aware of sex and the consequences it presents.  I mean, Brittany legit thought she was preggers because she saw a “stork” outside her window.  If you thought Finn believing that he got Quinn pregnant in a hot tub was the most ridiculous thing they could come up with, you were wrong.
