March Madness: Sometimes Sixteen Isn’t So Sweet

This has been, by far, the craziest NCAA tournament I can ever remember. Every single game so far has increased my blood pressure, spiked my heart rate and probably shaved a few years off my life. If your bracket has survived the madness, props to you; I’m already down a two Final Four teams (I guess that’s what you get for ever having faith in a team from Pittsburgh or Notre Dame). Woof.

After a much needed break to get our heart rates back to normal, the next round of the tournament, the Sweet 16, kicks off this Thursday. Here’s a rundown of everything you need to know before you grab that bucket of wings/anti-anxiety medication and park yourself in front of the TV. Read More »

Ask a Dude: How Do I Make Him Trust Me Again?

Dear Dude,

I need the perspective of a man. Please help. My boyfriend and I have in a LDR for the past year because he’s studying abroad. Four months ago, I broke up with him for stupid reasons and I thought he would never take me back so I got drunk out of my mind and ended up hooking up with his best friend. I know, that’s the most horrible thing I could do and I felt like sh*t.

My boyfriend did try to get back together with me, however, we’re now going through a rough patch because he says he can’t get over the fact that I hooked up with his friend. I told him that it wasn’t because I liked his best friend – I was drunk and I emotionally messed up. I told him that I did it because I regretted breaking up with him and that I tried to fill that void by giving pleasure to someone else, and that it was a mistake. He said it didn’t matter; I hooked up with his best friend and he doesn’t know if he can ever get over it.

Dude, I don’t know what to do. I can’t take back what I did, and no reason I give my boyfriend will make him feel better. I love him and I know that if it wasn’t his best friend, he wouldn’t feel this hurt and I wouldn’t regret it so much. My boyfriend says he loves me and wants to stay together but doesn’t believe we can work out because it haunts him. Is there any hope for us?

Please help,

Put This On Your iPod: Anamanaguchi’s Dawn Metropolis

You might have noticed that I was absent last week. With SXSW going on over Spring Break here in Austin, I was too busy running around town from show to show to write. But never fear! It was all for a good cause, because now I have even more bands to show you! I thought I’d kick this rejuvenation of my iTunes off with one of my personal favorite bands that I got to see live for the first time: Anamanaguchi and their album, Dawn Metropolis.

About the Band: Anamanaguchi bring a whole new meaning to the word nerd-core. It’s a band from New York City that features Peter Berkman and Ary Warnaar on guitar, James DeVito on bass, Luke Silas on drums….and a hacked NES and Gameboy. While they are a chiptune-punk band, they are pretty unique in the fact that they also play traditional instruments like a true rock band. If they sound familiar, then you must have played the Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game; they did the soundtrack for it. Read More »

CollegeCandy Exclusive: I Know Megan Levant, Charlie Sheen’s Newest Goddess

You know what ‘winning’ is? Clicking on a link about Charlie Sheen’s newest “goddess” as a means of procrastination only to discover…

That can’t be her? Is it her?
Yup.
I know Goddess #3.

Her name is Megan Levant, or Princess Megan as she made us call her when she was our Hell Master in college during pledge week. Yes, goddess numero tres is my sorority sister. I wonder if she makes Charlie Sheen call her Princess Megan or if Goddess Megan has taken its place. I also wonder if that makes me Charlie Sheen’s sister in law.

What is there to know about this new insta-lebrity? Well, since Princess Megan has since deactivated her Facebook account (which is tragic because her photos were really entertaining), here are five things to help you get to know the newest goddess a little bit better.

1) She’s from Chicago, and apparently went to catholic school. Which is funny because she’s Jewish. (If she isn’t, then I’m really confused as to why she made us make bar mitzvah cards for her little brother during hell week). I wonder what Sister Mary Something would have to say about her new gig….

2) She went to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. And she had a lot of fun. She was frequently spotted at Bar Time, a late night pit stop before heading to after parties, where she’d often be slurring her words. She also may or may not have fallen one night and knocked out her tooth, though that hasn’t been confirmed. Either way – DUH, WINNING. Read More »

In Our Makeup Bag: Too Faced Aqua Bunny Bronzer

What It Is:
Too Faced Aqua Bunny Bronzer

Why This Should Be in Your Bag:

I think bronzer is one makeup item every girl needs. When used properly, it instantly brightens your complexion, makes you look awake, and gives you a healthy glow. Unfortunately, bronzer is one of those products that many people over-do and end up looking like an Oompa Loompa. Another downside to bronzer is that it’s a summer product that quickly melts off. In the hot months, your makeup is susceptible to run and streak, even if you shop high-end.

And on that cue, in comes Too Faced Aqua Bunny, a cream-to-powder WATERPROOF bronzer (or, as they put it, “splash-proof”) that promises a lightweight, sheer bronze that adapts to all skintones, Too Faced has potentially created a holy grail product for both girls who love the water and those with oil slicks for faces (like me!). This Post Grad Life: Out With the Good, In With the Better

I knew things were going to be different after graduation.  I graduated high school and shiz did not go down in college like it did in high school funky town.  Like any transition in life,  things change.  And with change, I am suddenly given the chance to look back in my life rear view mirror, appreciate what’s been left in my past and look forward to the brand new things that are coming in my future.

Like any college girl, the only thing I could think about upon graduating was how I wouldn’t be able to wear sweatpants to buy Arizona Green Tea at the gas station at 2 P.M. on a Tuesday afternoon.  I knew I was going to miss spending entire days sprawled out on my futon, watching Grey’s Anatomy re-runs and ordering Jimmy Johns for my mid-afternoon snack. My college siesta hour(s) – every day from 2-4 – would no longer be there for me to utilize. And that is something I’ve missed.

I’ve also missed going to the caf with all of my girlfriends on Sunday morning to discuss the weekend’s events over soggy toast and cheesy eggs.  I’ve missed when spring finally came and all of the boys on campus would showcase their forearms, and that bubbly feeling inside me that came from knowing that in just a few more degrees, they would be drinking Coors in their backyard. Shirtless. Read More »

5 TV Reunions I Want to See

Stop whatever you’re doing right now.

I have big news, ladies. Huge.

Apparently Jimmy Fallon is determined to have the set of Saved by the Bell reunited on his show. And he just got one step closer because Elizabeth Berkley, who played Jesse, along with Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, and Dennis Haskins, has agreed to participate if such a reunion were to take place. The only hold outs left are Kelly and Screech! So keep your fingers crossed, because I for one would give up sweatpants to see this happen. It’s that huge.

But that’s not the only reunion show I’d kill for. There are so many great canceled shows out there, and so many casts I would love to see reunited. I want to know where those characters would be now, and what my pre-teen crushes currently look like. (Fingers crossed their not all fat and balding.) I want answers to questions the show never answered and flashbacks to my favorite scenes, and never before seen scenes. I want reunions, dammit!

Starting with these 5 shows….

Six Reasons Why You Should Consider the Tech Industry

The following post is written by Josh Olson from UNC, one of our many friends at Uloop, a student powered marketplace. Read more great posts in their blog.

I once heard a story from the time of the Dot Com boom about young computer science majors, fresh out of college, who sat around their phones taking calls from giant conglomerates. The conglomerates and corporations would offer them six-figure salaries. And the programmers, for fun, would reply with words like, “$300,000? Frankly, I’m insulted” and then hang up with a bang, knowing that half-a-dozen more calls would come.

These may not be quite as heady times as those were. But the tech industry is still where most of the available jobs are. This becomes important as we are coming out of a Great Recession. So here are six reasons to consider getting a job in tech (even if you’re not a techie).

1. Supply and demand.

The Tech industry is one of the only industries with more demand for labor than there is supply. While the unemployment rate dances between nine and ten percent and companies everywhere are figuring out how to do more work with less personnel, the tech industry is currently one of the only industries that is hiring.

2. New markets.

New markets in the tech industry are popping into existence and exploding, like the Big Bang. And, historically, new industries are where people become rich relatively easily. For instance, consider the iPhone (or Droid) app industry: every major company wants an iPhone app; they are willing to pay top dollar; and yet there are not nearly enough programmers who know Objective C (the programming language of the iPhone) to meet the demand. This means that iPhone programmers command huge salaries (see reason 1). Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Whitney Port Looks Rad in Ruche

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (like Lake Bell) are spending $5,000 and more on an ensemble, you an spend way less...and save the rest for Margarita Mondays.]

Whitney Port is definitely my favorite blonde fashionista to come from The Hills (sorry, LC!) I’ve always admired her mix of boho, preppy, vintage, and contemporary pieces. She’s trendy, but still very much true to herself. Her looks are always fresh, never seem too contrived, and could easily be worn by an ordinary college girl.

Loves it. Read More »
