Lesson 20: Take a personal time-out.
So, you’re single, huh? Maybe it’s time to reevaluate whether or not you’ve really taken advantage or it. I know what you’re thinking, “What could I possibly have to take advantage of besides the sale on single serving frozen vegetables?” And while I fully support fulfilling your five servings a day, I think it’s time to branch out. Alone.
This past Saturday morning, it was a particularly gorgeous sunny day in my city and I knew I wanted to spend it outside. I called the guy I’ve been seeing recently and asked him if he wanted to tag along but his hangover had the best of him (over the toilet) so I wished him luck and decided to hit a local greenbelt solo. With my iPod, a Nalgene water bottle and time on my hands I wandered down the trails and couldn’t help but feel like I never wanted it to end.

Something tells me this lady isn’t making a salad.
[Special thanks to BuzzFeed for making us LOL.]

I’m making the official declaration: Flats are THE shoe of April.
It’s still too cold for sandals and wedges (especially this April where Detroit witnessed a 4-inch snow storm on April 18th! WTF, Mother Nature?!), but we shudder at the thought of having to tuck our calves into our boots for the 1,478th day in a row. Flats are the perfect in-betweener. They keep things polished but still keep your toes warm.
And this spring, there is so much fun to be had with the official shoe of the month. So many bright colors, fun prints, bold sparkles; there is no reason to stick to a basic black. As far as flats go this season, even if your head screams, “wow that is one loud shoe,” you can wear it as a neutral. (Same goes for bags!)
You can mix bold colors in a cute way by pairing a bold yellow flat with jeans and a bright orangey-red sweater. Prints that seem to go with nothing (leopard print, anyone?) suddenly go with everything. I never thought I’d say this, but leopard is the new black!
Nervous? Don’t be! Shoes are also the best baby step to take when you’re trying to get outside your comfort zone. Are you the type of chick who usually wears all black and would never dare to buy a bright sweater? Try a bright flat to lean into it! Are you loving the sequins but feel like you couldn’t pull off a sequined dress? Try the sequined flat instead.
So until the weather lets you really play with your wardrobe, use these next few weeks to play with your flat footwear. Here are 9 killer pairs, perfect for all occasions, to get you started. Read More »

So abstinence underwear exists.
I’m starting to think that the people who come with elaborate and creative abstinence plans are completely asexual. Because when you’re hooking up with someone and contemplating the horizontal mambo, you’re really in the mood to throw on your spectacles and read the messages on someone’s underwear.
“Oh wait, what’s that, your body language is saying you want to have sex, but your underwear is saying not tonight? Well blue balls be damned, I’m pulling up my pants, and I’m going to go finish off my night reading the bible and eating dry toast.”
The only way this underwear method could possibly work would be if it had a high-res image of a baby being born and a Teen Mom DVD set coupon stapled on the back. That might remind some people of the possible consequences of sex…and hopefully remind them to use birth control.
Earth Day. The only holiday that somehow doesn’t have a college drinking game associated with it. So, since you’re sober, why not take a moment to save the planet. Or at least support companies that are making their own attempts to go green.
The following 5 companies are all my favorite eco-friendly brands. These are brands that include being kind to the earth in their manifesto and take steps towards “greenifying” their processing, despite the hike in cost. Often, they supply products on or above par with their less eco-minded competitors and are definitely worth a look!
Make Mother Nature proud and check ‘em out (just make sure you have your credit card handy!):
What other earth friendly companies should we know about? Sound off below!

When it comes to wooing the opposite sex, men have it easy. As far as I know, they approach you and whip out the pick-up line. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.
Women on the other hand, play a whole different game. Sometimes it seems as if our entire existence is based on impressing a guy. And it’s exhausting. We don’t think about it often (or we argue that we’re doing these things for ourselves as much as for the men), but when you stop and take notice of all the things we do to woo the gentlemen, well, it’s absurd:
1. Padded Bras
Guys have been trained to like a nice set of boobs, and women have been trained to do anything to give them to them. Hell, that must be Victoria’s Secret. But push-up bras are often uncomfortable, expensive and so. effing. hard. to wash without totally ruining them. And yet we wear them. All the time. In fact, you’re probably wearing one right now.
2. High Heels
Although I do enjoy how I feel when I slip on some pumps and strut my shiz at the bar, I don’t enjoy the throbbing blisters that plague me. And they always plague me. But I wear those torture devices every weekend anyway, because while it would be far more comfortable, there’s nothing sexy to the campus boys about a pair of worn-in sweatpants and some flip flops. Nothing brightens up an ugly rainy day like bold, colorful rain boots. Especially on those icky, brooding, stormy days where going to class seems like a life or death decision. That’s where Kamik comes in!
Kamik, a Canadian footwear company, manufactures the very rain boots that make a gray day that much brighter! Not only are they beautiful, they’re also functional. They’re waterproof, have great traction, and have soft, insulated Polartec on the inside of the boots to keep your feet warm and dry, despite any wind, rain, or snow!
But the coolest part of it all is that they’re made out of completely recycled materials. Can you believe it? The boots 100% recyclable!
The way these boots are made is also amazing. Kamik uses a green hydro-generated power source that uses and reuses the water so there’s practically no waste at all! Also, Kamik has had a long-standing recycling program that rescues scraps and old boots to create fresh pairs. From start to finish, Kamik is completely and 100% eco-friendly! How many other companies can say that?!
And because we think they’re so awesome – and because it’s Earth Day! – we’re going to give one of you, our devoted readers, your very own pair of Kamik rain boots.

Today is Good Friday, which for many Christians means the a day to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. But that doesn’t mean the holiday is only for practicing Christians. Nope. Whether you’re celebrating the holiday for religious reasons or not, it’s a great reminder to turn your Good Friday into a GREAT FRIDAY. And let’s face it: with the spring semester quickly coming to a close, we all need a good 24 hours to just do something, anything, that doesn’t involve work or exams or extracurricular activities.
So here a few ideas to make those 24 hours blissful and entertaining!
1. Go on a reality TV binges
There’s really so much to choose from. Jersey Shore, My Life As Liz, or my personal favorite, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, or any other offshoot of that show that has to do with the Kardashians. (I simply love that family. They’re just too entertaining. It should be illegal…but I’m really glad it’s not.) There’s really nothing better than watching impossibly raunchy boys, a strong-willed indie redhead, or amazingly chic girls while lazing about on the couch with a bag of chips and a blanket. Nothing.
2. Check out a buy one, get one free at H&M
“Buy one get one,” “free,” and “sale” are three of my favorite phrases. They’re even better when they’re applied to stores I actually like shopping at! Like H&M, for example. Have you seen their spring line?! Gorgeous. Plus, they’re always having sales and discounts (and I’m sure they’re running an Easter sale today), so it’s hard not to feed into the shopping frenzy that leaves your wallet lighter and your hands heavier (bags don’t carry themselves, you know). Clothing is a necessity, after all! Read More »
