Hot or Hot Mess: Ashley Olsen in The Row Red Suit in New York

[Like it or not, we all judge people every day. Especially when it comes to their fashion choices. From the girl with the too-short skirt for class to the old guy who insists on wearing short shorts and doing butterfly stretches at the gym (yeah, try to get that visual out of your head), it's impossible not to form an opinion. And now we're gonna share those opinions with the world. Every week, I'll be highlighting a celebrity look that I may love/hate/not understand and see what you, my college fashionistas, think about it. So put on your Joan Rivers fashion cap (which is undoubtedly made out of all the skin she's had nipped and tucked over the years) and let it all out.]

Let’s face is, style-wise, the Olsens often make some… er….unusual fashion choices, but usually end up looking incredibly chic in something that really, really shouldn’t work. But does this outfit just cross over the line of odd?

Ashley Olsen stepped out of her New York apartment this week in a red suit from her and Mary Kate’s line, The Row, and black and gold Chanel sandals. The outfit was perfectly on-trend with this season’s brights, and I love the striped shirt under the jacket, but I’m not sure how I feel about the sandals. Perhaps this would have looked better (or less school-teacher-trying-to-look-”hip”) with more fitted-style trousers and oxfords instead? Or maybe the whole suit is the problem. The ill fit makes it look like something Ms. Olsen picked up at the local Salvation Army….

What do you think, is this outfit a hit or a miss?

Rashida Jones is Pure Talent….and Sex Appeal

Rashida Jones is one of Hollywood’s leading funny ladies. From her spot on The Office to her permanent role on Parks and Rec (pretty much the funniest show on TV right now), she’s won my affection. What can I say – I’ve got a soft spot for smart, talented, funny ladies.

So it hurt my heart when I spotted Ms. Jones sporting skimpy lingerie and doing some sexy crawl thing in this month’s GQ. Don’t get me wrong, Rashida looked gorgeous, but did she really need to be half-naked to do an interview about her upcoming indie flick, ‘Our Idiot Brother’?

While Rashida kept it cool and claims she’ll “never be the person doing a cartwheel and landing with the skirt over my head,” the interview (read all about it here) still begs the question: Why do women in the media have to put sex appeal first in order to sell their product? Is it possible for a woman do be successful in Hollywood today without doing a sexy photo shoot?

Can’t we just recognize her for the awesome woman that she is?

Welcome to the Real World: Get The Interview

[Life after college is hard. Like really hard. But it's not so hard that you should curl up in a ball and watch E! marathons all day long. Not only are we covering the experience from a first-hand perspective, but we're now covering it from a how-to-survive-it perspective. Every week, we're going to bringing the best advice to getting through your first post-grad year. Because sometimes, your grandmother's "just go to law school" advice just doesn't cut it.]

There are a million (give or take) articles out there on how to ace an interview and write a stellar cover letter. But there aren’t that many that tell you how to get the interview or how to make sure someone reads your cover letter. So today, we’re giving you a a few insider tips on making sure you get the interview.

Send emails at the right times. If you send an email on Friday (or heavens forbid, Friday afternoon), it will most likely get forgotten. There’s only one thing on someone’s mind on Friday…”how can I convincingly make it look like I’m doing real work when I’m just gchatting my friends for weekend plans.” On that same note, don’t send anything on Mondays, either. Everyone is catching up on their email and prioritizing the important stuff. Your stuff will be put a list to deal with later…and sadly forgotten.

Follow instructions. And double check that you followed instructions. No seriously, I’m constantly amazed at how many people don’t include a writing sample when we specifically ask for one. Follow the application instructions to a T. Don’t attach anything they don’t ask for and don’t forget anything that they did. Read More »

10 Things That Will Be Obsolete When Our Children are in College

Our generation has been called a lot of things over the years, and not all of them have been particularly flattering. But I think we can all agree that we are the generation that thrives on technology. They call us the “thumb generation” because we’re always texting or typing, and that’s not really something we can argue with. We are the age of the internet, the cell phone, and the iPad. We are the age of all things digital.

Just think of all the technological developments that there have been since our parents were college seniors. For one thing, if you were a college girl when you mom was a college girl you wouldn’t be reading a blog. You wouldn’t even know what a blog is. You wouldn’t even have cordless phones, never mind a cell phone, AND you’d be using a typewriter to write your final papers. And none of it would have seemed the least bit weird to you. But it seems weird to us. But you know what, all the stuff that we do now may eventually seem outdated to our children some day.

Like what, you say? Why I’m so glad you asked…

The 6 Most Annoying Things about Move-Out Day

Move-out day is usually a good thing, right? You get to move out of the tiny room you’ve been living in for the past few months and move back to the real world: a place where you don’t have to live out of plastic storage containers. Though exciting, packing can be tedious and stressful. And hot. Why is it always hot? And it doesn’t help that there are tons of annoying things that always seem to happen when move-out day comes around.

1. Forgetting things
Even when you think you’ve double-checked every drawer, desk, and closet, you always manage to forget some tiny (but completely essential) item. Whether it be a cell phone charger, iPod cord, toothbrush, or any other little gadget that you usually take for granted, there’s always that one little thing left behind. And you always realize it 3 seconds after you hand in your keys and drive off into the sunset.

I’m starting to think it’s a conspiracy by the cell phone companies. I mean, I can honestly say that the only time I ever buy anything at Radio Shack is when I need to buy a replacement charger. So THAT must be how they manage to stay in business… Read More »

Baggin’ Out: Wayuu Taya Bags

Every girl needs a good purse (or 12). Whether you’re going for groceries or running from class to class, they are simply essential for holding all your, uh, essentials. Each week, I’m going to show you a fashionable, yet functional purse for the college crowd and let you know why you absolutely need it! I apologize ahead of time to your bank account.

Northern Ontario has been experiencing delightfully hot weather this past week. I was finally able to sit outside, enjoy a book and bask in the sunshine. It resulted in a big sunburn on my chest (not so hot), but other than that, it was great! And the best part? Because the weather has been consistently hot, I’ve packed away my winter clothing and purses and busted out my summer gear. That means I’ll be sporting a wardrobe of neon, breezy chiffon, and most importantly, fun summery purses!

I just received my first summer paycheck and have been browsing the web, looking for the perfect summer addition to my handbag collection. I have plenty of neutral, fringed and leather bags and wanted something punchy, yet low maintenance. Cue the Wayuu Taya collection of bags! Read More »

Sexy Time: Declare War on Insecurities

Sex can breed a lot of things – familiarity, contempt, intimacy, orgasms, babies, hysterically awful stories to tell your friends… but the association with sex I want to address this week is insecurity. That crippling insecurity that a fellow CC writer detailed struck a nerve with me, and I’m sure many of you as well. I completely relate to those crippling fears that totally take me out of the moment. I’ve seriously stopped guys from taking off my skirt because, oh my god, it’s been over a month since my last wax (yes, my insecurity over a little hair outweighed my love of oral). I’ve almost had meltdowns while giving head because I was so worried about my technique.

Eventually, I realized I had to rectify this situation. Sexy time doesn’t have to leave you drowning in self-doubt. There are a few little things you can do to increase your confidence and feel great and sexy. Read More »
