Lesson 22: You Haven’t Seen It All Before
There you are on another Friday night, being walked to your door by yet another clueless guy after yet another date so bad it made you long for the pain of getting your wisdom teeth removed. He’s invading your personal space, closing his eyes, leaning in for a kiss he thinks is totally deserved but you can’t help but cringe. So in the words of Carrie Underwood, “you kiss that frog” and slam the door behind you, shudder and rub the traces of his saliva off your MAC lipstick and tell your roommate you’re giving up dating to become asexual.
As single girls running around the college dating scene, it’s so easy to convince ourselves that we’ve seen it all, that nothing comes as a surprise to us anymore. The frat guys who balance pseudo-drinking problems with the hands they insist on keeping glued to your ass, the guy from your Chem lab who could make a living off being awkward, the hipster whose band you could care less about – they all become the same clueless guy in the jaded, single girl’s eyes.

It’s almost the end of the school year and for those unfortunate seniors out there, it may also be the end of college. (Wah Wah) The second most asked question (right after “what are you doing to do after you graduate?”), will be “what do you want for your graduation gift?” While my wise brother always claims that cash is king, the older generation often wants to give you something more tangible as a gift.
So here’s a list of things you should ask for so you don’t end up with five copies of Oh the Places You’ll Go:

So by now we all know the statistics.
The economy is suffering and because of that post-grads are suffering as well. More college graduates are left without job prospects than ever before, and maybe even more importantly, more college graduates are moving back in with their parents than ever before. Years ago, this may have been taboo. It was practically unheard of. But now, it’s happening more and more often, and is far more widely accepted. And that’s because for the first time, my generation does not expect to have a better lifestyle than that of their parents. That’s right, ladies – the recession has officially become a depression, and post grads are eying their limited prospects wearily.
According to The Huffington Post, in a survey conducted only 44% of those interviewed believed that they would surpass the lifestyle they grew up with. And as one of those soon-to-be post grads, let me say that I understand this lack of optimism completely. The economy is still recovering. The job market is terrible. And companies are downsizing instead of hiring. So how can we know be sure that we’ll even find a job, never mind a job that will provide us with a better lifestyle than the one we grew up with?
It’s a dark realization. Read More »

Those Baby Phat designers really know how to flatter a woman's body.
I have to be honest, I used to be a little scared of maxi-dresses. Okay, not waking-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night scared, but just a little nervous. They were always one of those trends that I thought looked great on other people – usually tall, gorgeous people – but I’d always been too nervous to try. I also wasn’t really sure if they were my style. While I tend to keep things pretty girly, I also like to go a little edgy with lots of leather and blazers, and I’d always found it was girls with that effortless Nicole Richie boho thing going on that pulled the maxi-dress off best. Then, of course, there was the issue of length and height. I am average height, but I always consider myself a bit of a shortie and I was worried I’d be overwhelmed by this much material.
But then I decided to face my fears head on (and procrastinate studying for exams), so I got myself a maxi-dress and went to town in my closet mixing and matching pieces to make a ton of different looks. And much to my surprise, the dress was not only totally flattering on my body, but also a really versatile piece. You really can do so much with these dresses….the dresses that will now officially be my spring and summer staple (partly because it doesn’t require me to shave my legs).
So, for those of you who’ve also feared the maxi-dress, here are just a few different ways to style ‘em up for every style and occasion: Read More »
Nothing I say about this story will do it justice. Because the actual news story alone is enough to make you think you’re high on something. There is not one sentence that doens’t make you say “WTF” or “OMG “or “of course this happened in West Virginia.” Seriously, it’s like a reporter printed out a journalism mad libs kit and played it with his 7-year-old daughter.
So with no further ado, I present “Man High on Bath Salts Kills Neighbor’s Goat, Police Say.”
So I hope this doesn’t come as a shock to you girls, but Sunday is Mother’s Day. Yes, Mother’s Day. Go ahead, check your calendars. I’m right? I know.
What? You forgot to buy your mom a card? A gift? That’s okay. All hope is not lost. I’ve got the perfect gift idea for you. If you want your mom to have a great Mother’s Day than just forget that she ever did any of these things…
1. Pulled out the naked baby pictures at parties.
2. Came inside at your middle school dance when you told her to wait in the car.
3. Looked at your outfit, raised her eyebrow and said, “that’s what you’re wearing?”

[After four years of writing in our undies, we've accumulated a lot of great content on CollegeCandy. I realized this when I was reading the site the other night....also in my undies. So many awesome posts get forgotten, so we decided it was time to bring 'em back. So kick off your pants, kick up your feet and enjoy.]
I love dudes. Straight up, dudes are amazing with their tallness and deep voices and facial hair and whatnot. I even like their ability to eat astounding amounts of food and their random, dorky humor. There are so many awesome things about guys that girls in general just don’t have.
However, there are some things that girls have that guys should just stay away from. These things mostly exist in the realm of fashion (and make-up, but we won’t go there because dudes should not wear make-up, period. We’re talking to you, Adam Lambert). Here is the list of the most heinous fashion crimes committed by the male population.

Women. Weight. And the media.
Three words that are thrown together more often than we realize in today’s society. Whether it be a news story about an anorexic woman, a magazine ad telling readers how to go about getting a bikini body, or a blog post about the double standard that exists for women, it’s safe to say that our culture covers women and their weight pretty heavily. (No pun intended.) But has anyone ever actually bothered to question why exactly society is so concerned not just with “fat people” but “fat women”?
Kim Brittingham, author of Read My Hips: How I Learned to Love My Body, Ditch Dieting, and Live Large has. And what she realized upon further exploration was so troubling that she wrote a memoir about it, chronicling not only her own struggles with her weight, and accepting herself for who she is, but also an exploration of the reasons why she, and so many other women, have these troubles. The result? An inspiration and heartfelt memoir so worthwhile that we just had to share it with our readers. So keep reading to find out why she is against the idea of dieting and how she learned to love her body as it is.
What gave you the inspiration to write Read My Hips: How I Learned to Love My Body, Ditch Dieting, and Live Large?
I feel like I wasted a lot of precious time as a younger person worrying about the size, shape and texture of my body. It makes me sad to remember how passionately I used to plot these physical overhauls for myself. So much energy and planning went into these self-transformation campaigns – and they were motivated by stupid things, like a desire to lessen the curve of my hips, or eliminate that little nugget of chub where my armpit meets my upper arm. You know that chub? I used to want a smooth line there so badly! None of those grand makeovers had anything to do with health, strength or longevity. It was about whittling and sculpting myself into somebody else’s image. And the things I did to change those physical details – like dieting, for example – were the very things that made me fatter in the long run. I wish I’d invested that energy in discovering more about myself and the world. My life could’ve been a REAL dream come true, much sooner.
Why do you think plus-sized women are treated differently than model-sized women in society?
Americans love to pick on fat people – and what qualifies as “fat” seems to get smaller every year. All this fat stigmatization might have something to do with the fact that our culture tolerates fewer and fewer prejudices as time goes on. It’s not nearly as socially acceptable today to spout ignorance about blacks or gays, for example, as it might have been even just 25 years ago. And people are no more secure today than they’ve ever been – maybe even less so. So they’re looking around for somebody to dump on, and fat people are a favorite target. Read More »
