Budget Stylista: Lookin’ Hot, Hot, Hot in this Season’s Hottest Swimsuits

June is here!

Memorial Day has passed!

It’s now officially okay to wear white… and to live your in swimsuit! Holler. Bring on the SPF and the finely tanned men. Ah, how I love summer.

There are SO many options this season in swimwear, from bright and bold prints, to white and turquoise, one shoulder, sequined, nautical… The list goes on! And the best part is, aside from the actual design of the swimsuit, so many different styles are on trend. One pieces are hot, hot, hot! Bold colors are sizzling. And retro styles are back in a big way.

When it comes to swimsuit season, my theory is this:

If you feel comfortable in it then ROCK it! Who cares if you ate too much at last night’s BBQ? If you put it on and think you look bootylicious, the world will too. I am a firm believer that the most important ingredient to looking good in a swimsuit is confidence. So shoulders back and stand up proud because in one of these bad boys not only will you be smiling knowing you look amazeballs (I mean, they are all so cute!) but you will be smiling knowing you look like a million bucks for the Budget Stylista price!

Can I get a woot woot?!

WTF Friday: Wrap Your Booty

Oh my gosh! It’s just what I always wanted…

…in 1998. I just hated when I’d go out for a run to school with my Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirt tied around my waist and have nowhere to put my Lip Smackers and gel pens. And now, 13 years later, they’ve come up with an outdated solution to all my problems!

Don’t you see? It looks just like a shirt wrapped around your waist, except it’s not! It’s a random piece of material that will hold all your ish when you run so it knocks against your thighs and butt for the duration of your workout! It’s like a less cool fanny pack, and I didn’t even know that was possible!

Friday Faves: The Difference Between Having Sex and Making Love

sex_thumb love spooning

“I don’t know if we should talk about this…”

“And why not? Everybody has sex!”

“Yeah, but everybody should be making love.”

“Come on, how many guys do you know making love?”

–Salt N Pepa, “Let’s Talk About Sex”

In the past six months, I’ve had sex. I’ve been laid. I f*cked. However, it’s been a long time since I’ve made love, and I kind of miss it. Some people might argue that there’s no difference – physically, they are the same. But emotionally, passionately, and mentally, the two deeds are very different.

1. The First Time.

The first time you make love with your partner, it’s usually a very special moment. It’s often planned out in advance, especially in new relationships. There’s often sensual foreplay, and your bodies fit together perfectly.

If it’s your first time with a new partner and you’re just having sex, it may be spontaneous. Your partner may not be your boyfriend, or even your crush, and the decision to go all the way is frequently a hormonal (thanks, booze!) impulse. First time sex can be sloppy and awkward as you try to find the right position, and after everything’s said and done, it feels like there was something missing. Read More »

Summer in the City: Welcome to NYC

This summer a dream internship with Lucky magazine moved me from Austin, Texas, where I’ve spent all 21 years of my life, to New York City for the summer. Come along for the ride and follow me through this column as I take on all that the city has in store for me. I’ll share tips I’ve picked up along the way about everything from how to pack (stop, drop and roll people!) to dating to fitting in (or standing out) and so much more.

Tip #1 – If you have the means, go where your industry takes you during your undergrad years to prepare yourself for post-grad life.

The wisest advice I’ve ever been given was from one of my professors my freshman year of college. He pushed up his elbow-patched sleeves and sternly looked me in the eye and said, “Go where your industry takes you, even if you’re scared out of your mind — Go.” As a journalism major aspiring to work in women’s magazines, I put my college education to good use and figured that at some point my industry would take me to New York; I guess I just didn’t think it’d be before graduation.

(Goodbye) Letter from the Editor

My Dear, Dear CollegeCandy Readers,

I graduated college with a degree in Secondary Education. Yes, at some point (probably after 12 games of beer pong) I thought it would be a good idea to spend my life with high school brats. You can imagine why that didn’t pan out for me…. After doin’ the whole graduation thang (for which I was horribly hungover and still wearing my outfit from the night before), I did what any lost/confused/depressed 22-year-old girl would do: I packed up all my stuff and moved to New York City to pursue my dream of writing.

My parents didn’t support it and, unlike the rest of my friends, refused to support me. But I didn’t let that stop me. I knew I would forever regret it if I didn’t at least try. The whole thing was crazy; I was moving to the most expensive city on earth with no job, no plan and no money. But the fear of failing (and having to prove my parents right) fueled me, and a mere 2 months later, I’d landed a job.

And not just any job. An amazing job.
I was hired right here at CollegeCandy.

For the past three years I’ve spent my days working with the most phenomenal college writers, producing the most phenomenal college content. My job requires me to read gossip blogs, to watch horrible reality TV and to share graphic details of my cursed dating life. It’s insane that someone has been paying me to have so much fun, especially when the rest of my friends work tirelessly for ungrateful bosses doing mind-numbing work.

But now it’s time for me to move on; to take the skills I’ve acquired and try something totally new and different. To put my passions into a new company in a new position. And so today is my last day as the Editor in Chief of CollegeCandy.

I am incredibly grateful for the time I’ve spent here (despite the many commenters calling me a whore, a slut, an insensitive a-hole, and a whole lot of other things I’d rather not list), not only because every day was an exciting new adventure, but for the many life-altering lessons I’ve learned. So taking a cue from Oprah, I’m going to use my last post to impart some great wisdom on you all. Below, the 4 biggest lessons I’ve learned at CollegeCandy:

Hot or Hot Mess: Keira Knightley in Rodarte at the 2011 Jameson Empire Awards

[Like it or not, we all judge people every day. Especially when it comes to their fashion choices. From the girl with the too-short skirt for class to the old guy who insists on wearing short shorts and doing butterfly stretches at the gym (yeah, try to get that visual out of your head), it's impossible not to form an opinion. And now we're gonna share those opinions with the world. Every week, I'll be highlighting a celebrity look that I may love/hate/not understand and see what you, my college fashionistas, think about it. So put on your Joan Rivers fashion cap (which is undoubtedly made out of all the skin she's had nipped and tucked over the years) and let it all out.]

One thing I love about being British is the word “quirky.” This word is frequently flung around as an affectionate way of saying that we dress kinda eclectically and often downright weird. It’s the word that allows us to get away with looking like our Grandmas and wearing our boyfriend’s clothes (the delightful Ms. Chung springs to mind). But being “quirky” and a little out-there doesn’t always work, no matter how willowy you are.

Take this dress for example. It has that perfect “found-this-in-a-vintage-store” look, despite the fact it’s price was probably closer to that of a yacht. But it also looks a little too grungy. It really should be a gorgeous dress, with the light tan color, pretty sparkles and adorable collar, but I’m not sure if it’s the odd shoulder that looks like it’s falling off her, or the tiered skirt, but it definitely looks like something old Aunt Hilda donated to Goodwill. I like that she’s kept her makeup and jewelery simple with so much going on in the dress, but maybe a lighter shoe would have tied the look in better — or a black clutch to pull together the black shoes. How Much is too Much? Your Official Summer PDA Guide

Now that Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez have PDA’d all over Hawaii this past weekend, it really got me thinking: how much is too much? Everyone has their own thoughts on PDA. Some love it, some can’t stand it, and others just don’t give a crap! But the truth is, it’s everywhere!

And with the weather warming up, it’s not surprising that our hormones are too. The PDA-ers will be out in full-effect, so we thought we’d put together a little guide to help you decide when PDA is appropriate and when it’s just a bit over the top.

For all you lovebirds out there, this is for you!
