When Loving Harry Potter Turns Ugly

It’s one thing to be a fan, but these people take their Harry Potter devotion to an entirely new level. Like a “are you sure you want to permanently put that Dumbledore quote on your neck?!” level.  And the scariest part of this whole thing? You KNOW these people are already waiting in line for the movie.

Okay, admittedly, some of those tattoos are pretty cool.

      Cool or completely regrettable?

Some of the things you consider crazy, others consider devotion. There is absolutely nothing wrong with letting this change your life, but there is also nothing wrong with not letting it change your life. Some of 'em, you know very questionable, but it's not our place to judge what other people will or will not regret.

      What’s wrong with the drawings??

Some Dumbledore quotes are profound and would make great tattoos, just so long as they don't have a picture with them and don't take up half your skin. And what is wrong with the art! When you read you imagine it in your head, if you're an artist what is in your head is transferred into art.

Wow, way to be judgmental. Some of this art is actually pretty amazing.

      Pretty judgmental claims you're making….
What about all the girls in the world obsessed with Gossip Girl or 90210?
Why is it okay to be crazy over things like that but not Harry Potter?

I like the golden snitch and dark mark tats! I'm thinking about getting the lightning bolt scar tattooed on the back of my shoulder. And I don't see anything wrong with the fanart… that's why it's FAN-art.

You have tattoos and fanart as evidence of weird obsession? You suck at life. Seriously go kill yourself.

Who cares what people get tattooed on their body. It’s there body not yours. They can do what they want, and if people don’t like it. They can shove it where the sun
      don’t shine.

i agree with everyone else: as long as what you get doesn't take up your whole body or is in some place you can't easily cover up with clothes let people do what they want! and some of that art was amazing, there's nothing wrong with creatively expressing your love for something in whatever what you can–drawing fanart, writing fanfiction, making costumes, whatever.

Agreed. I actually have the Dark Mark tattooed. Harry Potter is more than just a story, it is apart of a whole generation and it helped many children in many ways. The only people that have a problem with avid HP fans, are the ones that never had an imagination growing up. They have nothing to believe in and never did.

In a world where being bored and indifferent is considered cool, I always enjoy seeing people showing enthusiasm for something. People need to geek out more often.

I'm incredibly offended by this article. The Harry Potter fandom is a beautiful thing, and it is wonderful to see people passionate about something. It is not anyone's place to judge anyone else's favourite books. I don't usually expect to see high quality articles from CollegeCandy, but I don't usually expect to see offensive ones either.

All really sad and creepy. Makes you lose hope to discover such cluelessness exists.

Way to harshly judge things you don't understand. I see nothing wrong with any of those things. Sure some of the tattoos are a bit garish and those people might someday wish they had gotten something a bit smaller, but there is nothing inherently wrong about getting a tattoo of something that has had an affect on your life. The Harry Potter fandom has had a huge impact on a lot of people. For some people the people they meet their are the only people who really understand them. There is a sense of camaraderie that they can't find anywhere else. The fandom has brought people together and for some people it has changed their lives.

This is a world with a lot of very unhappy people. Who are you to say something where people can find happiness is wrong.

You just dissed over one million people. But you probably aren't capable of comprehending the ridiculous amount of Harry Potter fans and their devotion to something that went on for over a decade. A majority of Harry Potter fans grew up with the series and it's become an important and memorable part of their childhood. Myself included. I started reading the series when I was in third grade and thus began my love for reading.
And you know what the best thing about Harry Potter is? It's ability to appeal to children, males, females, and bridge gaps between generations. It's the bestselling series of all time for a reason. There's so much creativity, so much moral value.. so many life lessons, can be found in one of those books. But you couldn't understand that, could you?
"And the scariest part of this whole thing? You KNOW these people are already waiting in line for the movie." You bet I was. I even met a hot guy and got to talk to him for 5 hours while I waited.
Anyways, what really gets me about this article is that you pass off anyone who has a deep passion or connection to something (and I assume you're picking on this because to you it's just 'nerdy') as obsessive, when maybe it's just something they can really relate to.

    Tell us what you're thinking...
