Have You Heard of Dorm Room Diva?

Let’s talk dorm life. As an incoming freshman, I’m left to gather my information from other sources, but here’s what I’ve got so far:
- It’s awesome.
- It sucks
- You’ll hate your roommate. Unless you become best friends.
- It’s cramped.
- It’s unorganized.
- and if you don’t bring storage containers, you’re screwed
It’s pretty confusing for an incoming freshman who is trying to figure out what she needs.
So you can imagine my delight when GreatUsefulStuff.com’s Dorm Room Divas generously sent me a few products to test out as I prepared for the biggest move of my life. At reasonable prices (the 3 items reviewed each cost under $15!), these items went from wants to dorm room must-haves. (And I’m not just saying that because I got the stuff for free..they are truly awesome products.)
Over-Towel-Hook Hair Dryer Holder
Phew, that’s a mouthful. But after having used the rungs in my radiator at home for the past year, I realized I was definitely in need of a new location. Not only is it well-designed for its purpose, but it has a place for you to wrap the cord. Talk about convenient!
This durable rubber mesh is perfect for storing bottles and tubes of toiletries, as well as a spacious. The center compartment can hold a small towel or even a change of clothes when trekking to and from the hall bathroom.
This pouch boasts several spots to stash your beauty necessities and it’s the ideal tool for lugging your eyeliner collection between home and school. Additionally, it is wall-mountable via the connector spot for the fastening latch thingy; a great option to have if you’re sick of constantly having to pull your products out of drawers.
What else should a new freshman get for college? You know, besides the usual stuff that everyone recommends.

Bring an area carpet! Most don't think to bring one and then realize it's a necessity, unless you want to be walking on the cold, dusty linoleum floor right when you get out of the shower. Overall, I hated dorm life with a passion. My roomie was a crazy (literally..she got kicked out finally after her boyfriend peed on my carpet), and everyone else on my floor were besties from a small town who didn't associate with anyone outside from their group. But hey, lots of others love it. It really depends on your particular situation I guess.

Residence Life can be a wonderful experience! Don't be afraid to get to know your RA/DON/CA! They are your ultimate resource on what to do in situations and can direct you to any resource on campus that you might need. Don't shut yourself in your room. Get involved on your Hall Council, go to events put on by your RA's and join clubs on campus! There are countless opportunities to make your experience in the dorms a memorable one. Suggest events to your RA such as floor dinners or floor slumber parties in lounges, they are all great ways to get to know your floor mates and create lasting friendships. Most roommates do not become best friends but that isn't a bad thing, work towards keeping open communication and mutual respect and you will be just fine.

Such great ideas. I'm lucky that in my residential college, there is no such thing as room mates. At least, not ones that we have to share a room with- I still share a bathroom and kitchen, etc. I'd recommend non-permanent decor, that is simple and easy- a vase of origami flowers, removable wall stickers (whiteboard/blackboard ones are extra awesome), etc. I would also recommend getting a pancake maker. I use this appliance for not only cooking pancakes, but frying eggs, chicken nuggets, etc – anything that isn't too large. I've found its works better than the stove/oven in the kitchen. (Of course, you should check the dorm rules first- some places do not allow cooking in your dorm room). I also love my hand-held scanner, and my little gadget that lets me attach my old playstation 2 on my computer monitor (it was much cheaper than a TV and saves a lot of space. Also, I can have both the playstation game and my computer work on the screen at once. It's awesome).
On the topic of space saving measures, I actually have two cardboard boxes (which are great for moving things in and out of the dorm room but don't fit under my bed or anywhere during semester) that I combined into a shelf- with a cloth over the top, it us distinguishable from a coffee table, but much, much cheaper and easier to store during the holidays.

pancake maker?! That sounds amazing (and extremely handy), I'll definitely be looking into that. Thanks, Stephanie!
