Summer in the City: Drinkin’ on the Cheap

[This summer a dream internship with Lucky magazine moved me from Austin, Texas, where I’ve spent all 21 years of my life, to New York City for the summer. Come along for the ride and follow me through this column as I take on all that the city has in store for me. I’ll share tips I’ve picked up along the way about everything from how to pack (stop, drop and roll people!) to dating to fitting in (or standing out) and so much more.]

It’s safe to say that coming from the land of Thirsty Thursday nights, where $5 liquor pitchers and $1 beers reign, to the land of $12 mixed well drinks has been an adjustment. It’s enough to wonder whether the experience from my unpaid internship is worth as I dish out more cash in one night than I do in a month at the bars from my university town. Of course I love my internship, but my drinking habit is hard to maintain in the city.

Tip #22 – Scope out bars by the universities around town.

Lately my friends and I have been spending our weekends (and some of our weeknights) at the bars around St. Marks Place because, whether the atmosphere is pleasant or not, the drinks are cheap. At The Continental $10 buys you five shots of anything and when you’re living on next to nothing, you cant be picky about minor details like the douchebag drenched in Cool Water pressed up against your back. We passed the NYU flags draped on buildings as we made our way to the street of bars. Though the ambiance doesn’t fit the hipster NYU stereotype- opting for more of a frat-tastic vibe instead- we were perfectly happy doing the stanky leg with our $4 drinks in hand…regardless of the fact that every guy was wearing the same Polo, just in different colors. Overall, you get what you pay for and most of the time, the value (judging by our BAC levels by the end of the night) is worth it. Read More »

Win a Sony VAIO S Series Laptop (Like We Use Here at CC!)

Okay, so here at the CollegeCandy offices, we’re pretty obsessed with our candy pink Sony VAIO S series laptop PC. Why, you ask? Because this thing has a 15 hour battery life and looks amazing when we bring it to meetings. We have to tell you, it’s pretty freakin’ amazing living in a world free of tangled power cords and low batteries.

Just in time for back to school, Windows is giving away a VAIO and a sheet battery to one lucky winner. All you have to do is tweet @windows or post on their blog what you would do with your laptop if you had up to 15 hours of battery life. You can enter up until 7pm PST on July 17, so get going!

Celebs Were Teased Too

Middle school sucks, hands down. I don’t know anyone who has ever claimed that middle school was the best three years of their life. And if I did know someone who said that, I would also know that they were a pathological liar. Between the ages of 12 and 14, kids are awkwardly trying to adjust to their pubescent bodies. And they have braces. So things are just awkward all around.

And to make things worse, middle school kids are mean. Like, really mean. Name-calling is like eating for middle schoolers–they do it compulsively. Last time I visited my middle school (don’t ask me why I ever went back to that awful place), the halls were plastered with signs telling kids to stop being so mean to each other. Waste of money, obviously. At least they tried.

It will probably never stop, that’s just the middle school MO. But if you thought you were the only one out there getting called chicken legs on the regular, you are oh so wrong. Even celebs got teased when they were kids. Oh you thought they were perfect? Well they are, of course. But they had to be 13 sometime.

Check out these nicknames celebs were teased with when they were younger.

Hot or Hot Mess: HP Cast at the London Premier

[Like it or not, we all judge people every day. Especially when it comes to their fashion choices. From the girl with the too-short skirt for class to the old guy who insists on wearing short shorts and doing butterfly stretches at the gym (yeah, try to get that visual out of your head), it's impossible not to form an opinion. And now we're gonna share those opinions with the world. Every week, I'll be highlighting a celebrity look that I may love/hate/not understand and see what you, my college fashionistas, think about it. So put on your Joan Rivers fashion cap (which is undoubtedly made out of all the skin she's had nipped and tucked over the years) and let it all out.]

The stars were out for the premiere of the final Harry Potter movie in London last week, the there was a mix of good, bad and Helena Bonham Carter.

The dress of the night has to go to Emma Watson, who wore a stunning, strapless Oscar de la Renta dress. The dress had a silvery detailed bodice and incredible tulle skirt. She accessorized with simple earrings and a cocktail ring. The whole look was sophisticated and stylish, but also exciting and fun. Read More »

Beat the Heat with Sweat-Proof Makeup for Less than $10!

Sweat and water are great… when you’re at the beach, covered in sand and enjoying a day off, but when you have somewhere to go and people to meet- you want to look your best. When it gets to be hot and humid out, make-up just loves to run and smudge at the most inconvenient of times. That being said, sweat-proof and oil-free make-up is obviously the way to go during the summer months, but don’t worry! It won’t burn a hole in your pockets either!

How to Survive without Harry Potter

I read “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” for the first time when I was 12 years old. I am now 22. For at least ten years, we have all lived with the saga of Harry Potter existing in a sort of screensaver background to our lives. I can measure events through high school by Harry Potter book releases and movie premieres. The end of Harry Potter really signifies the true end of childhood for us. And now, as the premiere for the very last Harry Potter movie approaches, I have to wonder: how the hell are we going to survive without Harry Potter?

I mean, really? What excuse will we have for discussing the politics of a fantasy world without looking like complete nerds? What other opportunities will exist for us to dress up in schoolgirl outfits and capes? Let’s be real: Harry Potter was the greatest thing to ever happen to us. It became socially acceptable to tap into your inner nerd. So, really, what are we going to do now?

Now that we won’t have Harry Potter, that triumphant hero, in our lives, I have a few suggestions that may or may not work.

Welcome to the Real World: Finding Your First Apartment

[Life after college is hard. Like really hard. But it's not so hard that you should curl up in a ball and watch E! marathons all day long. Not only are we covering the experience from a first-hand perspective, but we're now covering it from a how-to-survive-it perspective. Every week, we're going to bringing the best advice to getting through your first post-grad year. Because sometimes, your grandmother's "just go to law school" advice just doesn't cut it.]

This past Saturday  I finally moved into my new apartment with my old best friend. We started out apartment hunt June 1st…looked at over 20 apartments, and finally found one we liked. It’s a work in progress.

Before June I knew nothing about looking for apartments, we had no idea what to expect the first time we saw one. It was pretty frightening. It didn’t help that we both grew up in the suburbs and had no idea what it was like to live, let alone rent an affordable apartment, in a city.

Needless to say I’ve learned a thing for two about hunting for apartments that I wish I had known about a month ago, like research neighborhoods before you drive to them and waste gas money.

So in order to help all of our readers I thought I would put together a few things I’ve learned along the way to help you all in search of your first (second, or third) place:

Oil vs Electric vs Gas Heat: Luckily this was one of the things my ex-boyfriend told me early on, “Make sure you get gas heat, it’s wicked cheap” however, I ended up finding an apartment with oil. But regardless, and for the most part (well depending on where you live), the price of heat goes like this: electric is the most expensive, oil is the second most expensive, and gas is the cheapest. Just something to keep in mind when looking at non-utility inclusive apartments.

You Can Now Apply to College Via Twitter

Remember back in the day when you wanted to apply to college and you had to take weeks to write several different 5oo word essays about what song best describes your personality and how much your mom inspired you when you were growing up? Well, thanks to Twitter, those essays may soon be a thing of the past.

Colleges across the country are picking up Twitter as a recruitment and communication tool. The MBA program at the University of Iowa even went as far as to offer a full ride to the applicant with the most creative tweet about why they should be accepted. So rather than the tedious process of writing/reading thousands of carefully constructed and overly edited essays, the school decided that it would be beneficial for the applicants to express their interest in the school in a concise 140 characters.
