Baby Phat Review & Giveaway [20 Prizes!]
August 1, 2011 11:30 am Posted in Cool Stuff, Fashion, Style Charlotte- University of Birmingham g+ page

A few months ago I was lucky enough to be sent a gorgeous maxi dress from BabyPhat to review for College Candy, so I was super-excited when BabyPhat asked me to review some items from their Spring/Summer 2011 range. They sent me a selection of cute tank tops, perfect for summer, ranging in style from cute, daytime tops to sparkly evening wear. Each top is fun and wearable, with key summer trends — perfectly for looking stylish in the sun! And after you read my review (or cheat and just scroll down) you can enter to win one of these super cute items for yourself.
The first top I tried was the gorgeous crocheted tank top. I’ve never worn anything crocheted before, but it was a hot trend for this season that I’ve been anxious to try. A word of warning though — layers are key with this look. Crochet on its own can be almost completely see-through, so make sure you wear a tank underneath. For this look I decided to go for a festival inspired look, pairing the top (with a white tank underneath!!) with white shorts, ankle boots, a leather vest and lots of jewelery. The top can be worn as a dress, too, depending on your height, but for me at 5’5”, I was just a little too tall to pull it off as a dress without bearing my butt cheeks.
Another comment too was that as a curvy girl, I needed to add a belt for some extra definition in this top, but if you’re naturally slim the loose cut would look fab on you.
crocheted top/denim jacket/floral shorts/oxfords/boater hat
For extra wardrobe-mileage (because who can afford to buy something they can’t remix?), this top would also look great with a floral skirt or shorts, denim jacket and boater hat.
The second top was undoubtedly my favourite. Yellow and stripes? Yes please! Stripes were really big this season, and went outside of simply black and white. This top was also a little more fitted which flattered my curves much more. It has a bit of an unusual back, though, so chose your bra wisely. A racerback, strapless, or stick-on bra is probably the best for this top. I kept it simple with a grey bandage skirt and belt.
tank/baseball jacket/denim shorts/converse
This top would also look great paired with sports-luxe pieces, a huge trend this season. Pair it with converse, denim shorts and a baseball jacket for sportswear cool.
Now, the third top presented me with a big of a challenge. Hanky hem tops look great on tall skinny girls, but on me look distinctively tent-like. I tried a belt, but it didn’t really work, and I panicked over how to style the top so it was more my style. Crop-tops were a huge trend this season, and paired with high-waisted shorts or skirts they were great for those of use who could use a few (thousand) more ab crunches to bare our midriffs. I decided to take both ends of the hanky hem and tie it, voilà- crop top!! I paired it with little denim shorts and sandals — a perfect beach outfit.
If you’re fortunate enough to have the shape to pull off a hanky hem, this top would look great with light wash skinny jeans and nude heels.
Finally, the jewel detailed tank top. This proved to be the most difficult of all to style. Originally mistaking it for black, I found the brown difficult to fit in with the rest of my wardrobe, and the gathering at the bottom of the top made my already generous hips look as though I’d recently given birth to triplets. I cursed my curves and floundered. I tried tucking it into skirts, shorts, anything, but couldn’t make it work. Then finally, in a desperate attempt to make it work, I paired it with camel shorts. Perfect. The light material of the shorts allowed the top to lie right, without giving me monster hips, and adding wedges elongated my legs. I grew to like it’s non-fitted style (I am a slave to belts) and am excited to find new ways to style it. If you’re blessed with slim hips, this will give you wonderful curves.
similar top/jeans/red heels/clutch/earrings
Pair with dark-wash skinnies and bright red heels for a gorgeous evening look. Plus, the detailing on the top means you don’t need to add jewellery to look perfectly polished.
BabyPhat has everything you need for summer, from day-time tanks and shorts, to gorgeous evening dresses. These tops are perfect for my summer wardrobe and into fall (and we’re thrilled to see they’re still available online). And that’s why College Candy is giving away TWENTY items of their clothing to TWENTY winners. Can you believe it? I almost can’t. Here’s what we’re giving away: crochet tank (see photo #1), slashed back striped tank (see photo #2), floral handkerchief tank (see photo #3), olive bubble top (see photo #4),

What I will miss most about summer is the ability to turn everyday into a new adventure. During summer, if you’re bored, you can text a couple friends and find something totally random and fun to do! And of course, I will miss not having to worry about midterms and finals =)

I'm going to miss the comfortable, lazy "come as you are" attitude. People are okay when you look greasy coming into the grocery store on a 90 degree day to "shop" and escape your non-air conditioned apartment.. Somehow you looking greasing in the middle of February is just uncomfortable for everyone.

I'm going to be completely honest and say just about absolutely everything. Summer is the perfect time for any college student. Clearly, there are no stuffy classrooms and 10 page papers to turn it, what could be better. I know I'll miss rolling out of bed and b-lineing straight for the pool. That's my summer classroom where I read my favorite magazine and learn information much more valuable than anything I learn in econ 201. I'll definitely miss all the cute sundresses and the matching accessories to die for. Ohhhh summer why are you gone so fast?

Most definitely spending a lot of times with my beautiful and handsome children, watching them have a good time and keeping them cool and safe!!!!

Imma miss summer on the whole because it's my favorite season of the year, the time when I get to travel with family and loved ones and catch up on old times, just seeing these ones, in particular relatives I havent seen since childhood after moving to the US, etc….. But, to answer the question less vaguely and more specifically, I will miss this heat, it has been hella hot this summer, that contributed to being able to wear some nice fashionable statement pieces from my fav. desidners…. So au revoir and hasta luego summer…
