Top 5 Things I Wish I Had Known Freshman Year

Remember freshman year? How scared you were? Nervous? So determined to make all the right decisions? Don’t you wish someone had handed you advice on what you should actually know before going into college?

Well, our good friends over at College Magazine compiled 100 postcards by upperclass students, sharing something they wish they had known while in their freshman year. And here, at CollegeCandy we consider ourselves experts on college life so we wanted to add in some things we wish we had known.

1. It’s okay to change your mind. We’re not all that mature or worldly during high school. It’s okay to change your mind if you hate your major or your school. It might only be four years of college, but it’s worth choosing something that will keep you happy the rest of your life.

Ask A Dude: How Do I NOT Scare Him Off?

Dear Dude,

So I was recently visiting my best guy friend who has an internship an hour away from where I go to school/live. I was introduced to one of his friends on my first night and ended up staying at his place after a night out. My guy friend gave me major grief but he approved, and his friend got my number to hang out later. The next night when we went out again I ended up back at his place for the second night in a row. He was really nice, funny, and we had a lot in common. He was nicer than a lot of other college guys I’ve dealt with. The next day he walked me to the subway stop, asked if I would be back and I said maybe. He kept texting me through out the day I left and stuff. So now I’m home, I really liked him thought he was cute and funny. I would really like to see him again but I don’t know how to go about it. Please help I can’t get him off my mind and could use some great man advice.

sincerely,

City Summer Queen

The Do’s and Don’ts of Going to College With Your BFF

It started at the bus stop. I was probably wearing obnoxiously colored leggings and keds, and she was probably wearing a denim jumper and Mary Janes with those little white socks with the frilly edges. You know the types. She asked if I wanted to share a  bus seat with her since we were in the same kindergarten class. I said yes. Fast forward 13 years, and we’re texting each other about our plans for the first night of college. Were we going to be going to the same rager with jungle juice being served in a fishtank? Was her roommate going to faceplant off of a bar in the basement of a frat house? Were we going to find a DD just so we could go to Wawa at 3am? Not quite yet.

Going to college with my BFF wasn’t always so kosher. Here are a few things that really helped us out.

1. DO make your own decision. We didn’t decide to go to school together. In fact, we refused to tell each other what our final results were from each college, just in case one of us would be swayed by the other’s decision. We wanted to make our own, independent decision.

Make Your Man Better In Bed

This Post Grad Life: I Talk About This Stuff?

“Oh.Em.Gee.  And then I woke up in his bed and he had peed all over his Superman sheets after we made out for four hours.”

“If one more person raises their hand in class and asks what time the final exam is as it is written in the 80 page syllabus, I’m going to vow to never eat a scone from the caf ever again. And that’s serious.”

“I think somebody farted in class today and I hope it wasn’t the hot dude. I really like looking at him and that would totally ruin things for me.”

These aren’t conversations I have anymore. In fact, I can’t even believe I used to have them. They are completely pointless, entirely stupid and absolutely glorious.  Ok FINE, I wish I still talked about this kind of stuff on a daily basis – but things have been a little different in my new post grad life. I never said people don’t fart in meetings rooms, but they aren’t sexy and I won’t tell anyone about it.

I’ve noticed a huge shift in my conversations lately. They’re like, slightly grown up. Flash Notice: I still talk about sex, flatulence, snot and totally gross 5-year-old boy things – just bare with me while I try to sound cool and old. Here are the top five new things I’m chatting about these days (that I’m not quite used to yet): Read More »

Interning in Ghana: Not your Typical Development Project

While many university students spent their summers in minimum wage jobs or fetching coffee, I spent mine interning in Ghana.

In case you need a little geography and history lesson, Ghana is located in west Africa, and shares borders with Cote D’Ivoire, Togo and Burkina Faso. It’s also one of Africa’s leading examples for democracy; it was the first sub-saharan country to gain independence from its colonial power, and since the 1992 constitution was approved there have been five relatively democratic elections.

I traveled to Ghana with the Canadian ngo, Journalists for Human Rights, as one of five university interns. My internship was spent in the newsroom of an English radio station, Kapital Radio, in the country’s second largest city, Kumasi. Four days a week I would head to the station to work on daily news bulletins, go out to cover stories with local journalists, then head back to the station to edit sound clips and write scripts. Every Saturday I would help produce Ghana’s only exclusive human rights talk show, Know Your Rights, hosted by my supervisor, Muftaw Mohammed. Each week we would tackle one of the country’s human rights issues, from the highly controversial homosexuality to land rights under traditional rule.

Though I only worked at the station four days a week, I didn’t exactly get a long weekend. On top of the work I did at Kapital Radio, I had a series of deliverables to be completed for jhr, including weekly video and written blogs and research on Maternal Health. So I got to see a lot of adorable Ghanaian babies.

My summer wasn’t all work though. During our week long vacation, one of my Canadian colleagues and I traveled through six regions –  from Accra to Bawku – in eight days, with many stops along the way. All on buses and tro-tros, which are kind of like a large van. Throughout my 14 weeks in Ghana I went on a walking safari at Mole National Park, trekked through the forest at the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, watched the national soccer team play and hung out at a popular beach spot at night.

My experience wasn’t your typical going to Africa to do development work and think you’re saving the world experience. I learned more from my time in the country than I’m sure anyone learned from me. I stumbled my way through Twi, the local dialect in Kumasi; learned how to properly eat fufu (a local dish) with my hands and learned about the history of the Ashanti people. The beautiful landscapes and welcoming people are just a few of the reasons I would recommend spending some time in Ghana.

Check out some of my amazing photos from Ghana below:

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Blake Lively is Red Hot

I can’t get enough of Blake Lively. In my humble opinion, she is one of the consistently most well-dressed celebs. Her street style is always fresh and eye-catching, and her red carpet style never ceases to dazzle. I love how her style is the perfect marriage of California casual, edgy haute couture and pure elegance. Recently, she was spotted on the set of Gossip Girl rocking a perfect laidback summer fashionista ensemble.

30 “Got Milk?” Ads from Today AND Back in the Day

A few weeks ago, the seemingly innocent “Got Milk?” team launched their raciest campaign yet: a sexist, controversial set of ads that tries to imply that drinking milk reduces the effects of PMS. The ridiculous and offensive ads went viral and received tons of criticism until the Got Milk? corporation decided to pull the ads off all media outlets (while still claiming the campaign was a “huge success”).

All this controversy makes me look back on a much simpler time. Ah yes, the iconic white mustache years. Even though it’s hard to believe that celebrities break free from their strict diet plans to enjoy a tall glass of milk every day, I definitely fell for that “drink milk and you’ll be pretty” message back in the day. I mean… if Angelina Jolie was drinking milk, wouldn’t you drink milk? Check out some of our favorite ads from back in the day as well as some of the more recent ones. Read More »
