As it turns out, very few TV shows make much sense. From crazy plot concoctions to questionable directing choices, we’re meant to let our imagines soar past any inherent flaws. Of course, as a young child, I did not think twice about the premise of these shows. They provided 30 minutes of giggling and excitement and who was I to question that? But now, I’m older, wiser, and an English major who is still equally addicted to TV… so I feel like it’s time to start pointing out some of the problems. Especially with Tia and Tamara returning to TV, engaged and pregnant.

We’re at our wit’s end with this country and their improper use of the word spinster. Once, a very long time ago (or maybe not a very long time ago, I’m no history buff), the word spinster actually meant something. And that something was NOT an unmarried woman living with cats. It was a woman who spun — and as a country we owe these original spinsters a big apology for stealing their professional title and turning it into something dirty.
So in honor of them, we present the original spinsters!

The word “diva” doesn’t have the best connotation. It’s often used as an elegant, tactful, refined alternative to “bitch.” Divas are lambasted for their nasty attitudes, their ridiculous demands, their lack of humility, their inability to play well with others…but I take another perspective on divas. A true diva is a woman who is talented and is determined to be successful, and if someone gets in the way of that, their wrath knows no bounds. Divas also possess a set of traits that I think every woman should have in her arsenal. In honor of Whitney Houston’s birthday, I would like to offer some advice on being the best diva you can be.
1. Find your talent and own it.
Everyone has a talent. Whether it’s singing, dancing, writing, being a leader, giving great advice, etc. Everyone has at least one thing that they excel at. Once you find it, hone it. Dedicate a significant amount of your time to improving it. Take pride in it. Make it a part of your identity.
2. Don’t be afraid to get a little cocky.
Arrogance is generally not lauded in our society, but sometimes mere confidence is not enough. Whether you’re interviewing for a job, or making the best impression you can to your professors, the ability to effectively sell yourself relies on having (or at least projecting) high self esteem. That doesn’t mean you need to make every interaction with someone all about how fabulous you are, but when the opportunity arises, don’t be afraid to toot your own horn. Read More »
My freshman year of college I knew someone who’s ringtone was When I Grow Up by The Pussycat Dolls. Basically the whole “I want to have groupies” vs. “boobies” debate was sparked in my mind every time this girl received a damn phone call. Not only was I plagued with that ordeal but also I find the song down right annoying. And of course, her phone would always be on loud.
Sometimes, people make questionable ringtone choices. Our friends at Lovelyish took a moment to recall embarrassing ringtones of yore, but let’s do one better.
Here is a foolproof plan to selecting a ringtone you will be proud of, not one that will provide your friends with ammo to write about your lame choices on a blog for everyone to read.
1. Classics>Current Hits: If you love the song and it’s five years later, it’s probably pretty awesome. You’ll get sick of the current chart topper (if someone plays Give Me Everything one more time…) but if the jam has already endured the test of time and you’re still loving it, I promise it’s a keeper.

[There comes a time in every girl’s life, (usually after a third or fourth martini), when she realizes “Damn, I need to do something… travel to Europe, take up Chinese, get married…someeeething! I need to change my life.” Finding myself in one such rut and without the cash-flow for a capricious jet-set to France, I decided to live by the book, take the plunge, and tackle the Benrik challenge.]
Week 7 – Task 1
Day 109: Test the foot you get out of bed on – Right
I always knew there was a risk of getting up on the wrong side of the bed, but I didn’t know that I had to deal with a “wrong foot,” as well. And so, to begin this journey, I decided to put my right foot down first, instead of my left. There was strategy to this decision. First of all, I am left-handed so I have always been partial to the left side. Then, assuming that the left foot would give me a luckier day, I decided to save it for Friday – a day I had some high hopes for.
But it turned out that I had a perfectly fine day. There were no storm clouds and I had a fun night out. So I figured, maybe there isn’t anything to this “lucky foot” thing either way… Read More »

I’ve recently been assessing the column and noticed that it’s severely lacking pants, so that was my mission for this week. Summertime is all about lightweight, flowy fabrics that allow your skin to breathe. Even though most of my pants-wardrobe consists of jeans, I try to remember that and pick up a few pairs of lighter pants for hot summer days and nights. Cargo-style pants are huge right now, especially after the release of J Brand’s Houlihan cargo. After searching for a lightweight cargo that was also budget-friendly, I came upon the often overlooked Victoria’s Secret website and hit the jackpot.
The Marisa Crop Cargo from Victoria’s Secret is the perfect summer bottom. It’s lightweight, trendy and comes in a rainbow of colors. They actually make this style in a few other fabrics too, including a super light linen. The cargo pockets are perfectly placed and designed to flatter your curves instead of add bulk. However, most people have no idea how to make them work at night. And that’s where I come in. Read More »
