Intro to Cooking: The I Love Trader Joe’s College Cookbook Recipe Review

When I started college, I didn’t cook. I had never really had to. I was one of those lucky kids who always came home to a homeade family dinner every single night. I was also one of those kids who was shaken back into reality by college meal plans and the reality that food is kind of expensive.

So when I was lucky enough to get Andrea Lynn’s cookbook, the I Love Trader Joe’s College Cookbook: 150 Cheap-and-easy Gourmet Recipes, sent to me for free (yay, for being a cheap student!), I was excited. Through college, I taught myself how to cook and found recipes I could reasonably enjoy with my limited means, both monetary and equipment wise. But I wish I had had a sweet cookbook to guide me through the process.

Trader Joe’s is a chain of grocery stores primarily on the West Coast, so unfortunately, a lot of  college students won’t have access to the specific products mentioned in the book. That being said, I toured through a few chain grocery stores in my area and found really similar products. SO that doesn’t devalue this cookbook.

CC Beauty Live: Bronzed & Glowing

Obviously, summer is the perfect time to go all J. Lo and be a bronzed goddess. It’s easy to look good with dewy, sun kissed skin. But it’s not always so easy to achieve said look. With the wrong bronzer application, you’ll look like Snooki. With too much dew, you’ll look like an oil slick. So where’s the in between? I just happen to know. And I love you all so much that I’m going to share it with you.

One of my tricks to bronzer is to make sure you’re not going matte. I like my skin to be matte most of the time, but if I’m using bronzer I keep it fresh, yo. For a bronzed look, I say go with a tinted moisturizer and a spritz of water. It gives you a very “I just came off the beach” feel. That being said, I’ve been using SUPER’s Sun Kissed tinted moisturizer with SPF 25 (safe and pretty!) which can be found at Sephora ($42). It’s pricey, but so great if you have dry or normal skin. For us oily girls, I wouldn’t go near it without a primer and finishing powder. But I love it anyway. And it has lots of healthy stuff in it that works wonders for your skin. Read More »

One Month Challenge: Outward Bound, Week Two

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. Last month Charlotte tried to stop biting her nails. This month, Tiffany is going to attempt to conquer Outward Bound. Can she do it!? Could you?]

So I’m actually here. I’m actually in the mountains trying to survive in the wilderness. The first week has been such a challenge for me. It’s one thing to imagine being in the wilderness but I don’t think that the reality of the situation really hit me until I had 60 pounds of gear strapped to my back and 2 miles to trek on my first night. Surprisingly, I’ve had little trouble adjusting to actual camping itself. In fact, I’ve come to like sleeping on the ground and find ferns quite comfortable.

However, I do still find my self waking up in the middle of the night to flick spiders away (I don’t even want to think about how many spiders I haven’t seen on myself…shudder). But just when I thought I was getting the hang of it, my instructors decided to shake up my world by having my crew complete a bush push. Now, what is a bush push you may ask? A bush push (not to be called a  bush whack) is where hikers go off trail and push through the plant life to reach their desired location. Bush pushing takes a lot of precise navigation, which can be hard to accurately do when everything looks the same. The other key to bush pushing is that you aren’t supposed to follow others so that a trail is not created. Read More »

Life of the Party vs. Mess of the Party

We all have that one friend. You know, the one who unknowingly initiates a game of “nose goes” upon downing her first Dirty Shirley of the night. Whether it’s her barely-there wardrobe or her promiscuous dance moves, she makes sure she gets noticed. And at the end of the night her head isn’t the only thing in the toilet—her reputation is, too. Follow these tips to make sure you’re life of the party, not the mess.

1. Wear the right clothes

Sure, we all love to show a little skin, but keep some stuff tucked away. Pick an outfit that is “drunk proof,” meaning it doesn’t require your attention throughout the night. Strapless tops and so-short-you-can’t-bend-down-in-them dresses definitely aren’t drunk-proof options. And take a cue from our pop princess, put on some panties, please.

2. Pregame wisely

Perfecting your pregame takes trial and error. One too many shots, and you’ll be slurring your words before you can say “bar crawl,” let alone partake. So be smart when starting your evening. Pick your poison, and try to stick to it. Remember: You want to be tipsy, not totally hammered when you hit the bars.

Saturday Flashbacks: Disney Movie Hotties

Everyone who wasn’t a home schooled jungle freak during their childhood and had a TV with a VHS player probably saw every Disney movie 500+ times as a kid and knew all the songs by heart– the hardcore kids even had the singalong cassette tapes for their karaoke machine. Disney movies were a major staple of all our childhoods, which is why even as young adults we can’t help but get nostalgic when we think about them.

However, these memories aren’t all singing and dancing. We all cried when Bambi’s mom was shot and when Scar pushed Mufasa off that cliff, and we were all totally scared when the Beast held Belle hostage. So since Disney has already racked our therapy bills high enough, we’re going to switch gears. In this list we’re going to reminisce on the happiest memories Walt Disney gave us: The Hotties.

Fashion Essentials for College Theme Parties

[This post and contest come hot off the Internet presses from our friends at CollegeFashion!]

Every college girl knows that theme parties can be some of the most fun events to attend during your four years. And while the parties themselves are great, the act of dressing up and creating a costume can often be the highlight of the night.

We all know the importance of building a wardrobe full of basics for mixing and matching, but in college, creating a “dress up drawer” with a few key pieces for costume parties can prove just as useful. The best part? You probably already have some of these theme party “essentials” in your closet.

Read on to see our top ten picks!

Single Girl Society – Dealing With Miss Thang

There’s always going to be that one girl in your group of friends who seems to take personal pride in your current single status. Regardless of whether she’s single or not, or even somewhere in between (aka dating some aspiring rapper who has a recurrent gig at the local BBQ joint with his not-so-talented beat-boxing cousin), it seems the night hasn’t ended until she’s gone out of her way to make you feel bad about your single life. Since a bitchy attitude has yet to hold up as a reasonable excuse for murder in court, just know there are plenty of other ways to deal with Miss I-Hate-My-Life-So-I’m-Going-To-Make-You-Hate-Yours-Too.

Lesson #34 – How To Deal With A Mean Girl, maturely and not-so-maturely.

First, you can follow your mom’s advice and brush her and her snide remarks off. Don’t get me wrong, I love my mother and she has given me some amazing life advice (examples include, “When it comes to coffee stains, dab, don’t rub” and my personal favorite, “It’s time you found some inner peace, dammit”) but let’s face it, there are just some days you don’t feel like being the bigger person. I respect the girls who can walk away from every snide comment, just like our mothers preached, because it really does takes more empowerment to walk away. But on days when you get sick of ignoring Miss Thang and her attitude, you can try some of these methods. Read More »

Here at CollegeCandy we’re all about abbrevs. They save time, they’re funny and we like to think they spice up mundane conversation. But these sayings come with a serious problem. Obvs it’s all fun in games when we’re talking, but how on earth do you spell them?? Do you go with phonetics or just shorten the original word? Take a look at the CollegeCandy approved abbrev spelling, because we totes need to set the record straight.
