5 Music Videos that Make Us Go “WTF?”

Once upon a time, music videos were just that: a video to go along with a song, but over the past few years, music videos have gone from simple, low-budget, dance-along clips to 10 minute long mini-movies complete with deep plots, intense battle scenes, and A-list actors. Although I’ve come to prefer the latter, I think we can all agree that music videos are no longer cute, little visuals to play in the background of parties, but feature-length films that require popcorn.

In honor of the upcoming 2011 VMA’s, let’s check out some recent videos that made us all make the “WTF” face.

1. Beyonce feat. Lady Gaga – Video Phone

This video is basically five minutes of Beyonce and Gaga chair dancing, hanging out with dudes who have cameras for heads, wearing multicolored costumes, and shooting plastic guns at each other. Kind of a crazy concept for a song that’s more or less just about letting some guy videotape you. Sidenote, Gaga looks really… pretty in this video — not weird or obscene, just pretty.

Intro to Cooking: Veggie Pockets

Hot Pockets. Tiny capsules of molten hot cheese and questionable meat products and even more questionable vegetables. For a quick lunch, they aren’t terribly satisfying. They’re also packed with fat… even the low calorie varieties are packed with salt and MSG flavorings that aren’t too good for you.

You know what’s an easy, healthy solution? Making your own at home. Don’t panic. It’s easier than it sounds. Plus, these guys are delicious.

The main vegetables I use are broccoli, carrots, tomatoes and spinach. Broccoli is a great source of vitamin E, protein, and calcium. Carrots are great sources of vitamin C and iron. Tomatoes are known for being excellent sources of lycopene, which is believed to prevent certain types of cancer. Spinach is one of the most nutrient rich foods out there – it’s a great source of fiber, iron, protein and a slew of vitamins Read More »

One Month Challenge: Outward Bound, Week 5

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. Last month Charlotte tried to stop biting her nails. This month, Tiffany is going to attempt to conquer Outward Bound. Can she do it!? Could you?]

Day 28, I never thought that I would meet you! I thought that I would be long gone before you ever arrived. But here I am and it’s a glorious feeling to see you; well, not completely glorious. I’m still pretty sore after the half marathon we ran yesterday. As with most of the trip, I didn’t know that the personal course challenge meant running 13.1 miles through the woods and up a mountain but I haven’t made it 28 days without expecting Outward Bound to kick my butt on a daily basis. Apart from putting my body through the ringer every day, Outward Bound managed to teach me invaluable life lessons. Here’s what I learned: Read More »

One of These Women Is Not Like the Others

Take a look at this Playtex tampon ad. One of these women is not like the others.

This popped up on my Pandora page, and I couldn’t help but be distracted by it.  Playtex’s current ad campaign is based on the idea that “every woman’s body is different,” and at first glance it’s a pretty standard tampon ad. Lots of pink and girly girls – note the skirts and long hair. But if you look at this ad, you’ll see that two out of the three female figures depicted here are almost identical, just posed differently. The woman in the middle and the one on the right are both very slim. They are ideal according to the “thin is in” mentality glorified in the media, but in all likelihood quite a bit smaller than the average American woman. The woman on the left is the only who looks “different,” as her silhouette is significantly more curvy than the others featured in the ad. (I’ll be using “curvy” as a very relative term – obviously, the “curvy” woman here is really pretty average, but she’s rather curvy in comparison to the other women in the ad.)

This is a tampon ad, and obviously a woman’s physical appearance has nothing to do with what type of tampon is right for her. But because it presents a picture of female silhouettes, in which we can see only the superficial outlines of three bodies, the focus of this ad becomes female body size and shape. Read More »

Saturday Read: The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood

Sometimes, I just need a chick-lit read. I’ve been trying to get into a whole stack of “serious” books and it’s just not happening. As summer comes to a close, I want to enjoy every second instead of working my brain into a novel I’m not really feeling. The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud has been sitting on my shelf on a while and, even though it’s sappy and predictable, I really enjoyed it!

I hate feeling like I need to justify a choice, but I think this one may garner plenty of dirty looks. After the movie version of this novel (starring none other than Zac Efron) was released a year or so back, to not-so-good reviews, the book has received some of the same undeserved flack. The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud is the story of Charlie, a man who survived a terrible accident that claimed the lives of his younger brother and dog when he was a teen. Ever since that night, Charlie has lived with not only guilt, but the haunting of his brother. Charlie takes care of the local cemetery, and every evening, goes into the woods to play catch with the ghost of his little brother. He organizes his life around this ritual, never missing a night for years. Then, Charlie meets Tess, a free-spirited sailor who wants to see the globe and everything changes. Read More »

Is Nail Stamping a Yay or a Nay

[This post and contest come hot off the Internet presses from our friends at CollegeFashion!]

I remember my first manicure vividly – I was in 5th grade and had just gotten braces, and my mom took me to the nail salon to try to cheer me up. I loved everything about the experience – especially my bright, sky-blue nails.

Fast-forward seven years to my senior year of high school, where I spent 30 minutes at the drugstore searching for the perfect neon coral-pink polish – even though the polish is totally old, I still can’t bring myself to throw away the bottle.
