If You Like This Expensive Store, You’ll Love This Cheap Store

I’m going to be honest with you — my first thought after watching that Shopaholic film was ‘so this means if I got a credit card, I could have amazing clothes like that too?’

Definitely not the point, as every person I shared my revelation with was quick to point out. But what’s a shopaholic on a limited budget to do? Figure out how to do it on the cheap!  I’ve rounded up some less expensive alternatives to those pricey stores we all love in hopes that we can look super trendy, without being super broke.

Welcome To The Real World: Telecommuting 101

This past summer I got my first post grad position. I worked for Monster.com as one of 34 community managers for their new Facebook application, BeKnown. Although they are based in Massachusetts, it was a telecommuting/make your own hours kind of job.

Working from home is a learning experience. Some people thrive in it, they learn how to be productive without having a boss tell them every little step. A very important trait to have in today’s workforce. But some people, like myself, are workaholics…and should never be allowed to work from home. To give you an example, in the past 48 hours, 26 of them have been spent working.

Now, I am not new to telecommuting or designing my own hours; this is my fourth job doing so. I love the freedom that you’re allowed, and how comfortable you can opt to be (although I recommend getting dressed daily before “heading” to work). But it gets tricky separating your work life and your home life since there isn’t any spacial difference.

So here are a few things to keep in mind while searching for that after grad job: Read More »

8 Crazy Unhealthy Diets That You Should Avoid

When it comes to losing weight, some people are desperate enough to try anything. Even though it’s well-known  that committing to a healthy lifestyle of eating right and exercising will give you slow, but ultimately successful results, it doesn’t stop people from jumping the gun and buying into ridiculous diet fads — most of which are probably more unhealthy than being overweight anyway. Seriously. Some of these are downright disgusting.

Ali Lohan: Skinnier, Scarier and Abandoning her Famed Roots

Here’s a shocking headline for you: Lindsay is no longer the only Lohan to become food for public thought!! Wow! You don’t say!? No way!

Well, yes way, I do say! Oh, the times, how they are a-changin’.

Surprisingly, it’s not her dad, Michael, or her mom, Dina. Nope. This time, folks, it’s her once adorable, once normal (or as near normal as possible) little sister, Ali. Maybe while we’ve all been distracted by her spotlight hogging, tabloid crazy older sister, Lindsay, we forgot to keep a close eye on the future of the Lohan clan. How celebrity irresponsible of us.

Most of you may be wondering what the big deal is, anyway. Let me give you a moment to take in the picture above: the cheek implants, the nose job, the…whatever they did to her eyebrows. But honestly, I can’t blame her. If I had Lohan blood in me, around me or even down the hall from me, you couldn’t ask me to crawl out of my own skin fast enough.

Think you can guess the top seven reasons why Ali Lohan is trying to pull the change-up of the century on her roots, her fam and her celeb status? CollegeCandy does! Watch and learn while we dissect the most important reasons Ali is abruptly abandoning her “adored” family name and looks: Read More »

The Real Way vs. the College Way: Theme Parties

There are always those girls who will use any excuse to get a little skanky, and college parties are generally their go to moment. Halloween is the one night a year Theme parties are the few nights a month when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it…Well, only a few snarky comments anyway.

Of course, in real life librarians don’t leave all but one of their cardigan buttons undone, businesswomen don’t rock spandex, and schoolgirls really aren’t that trashy. But hey, we’ll chalk these outfits up to sexual desperation, er, creativity.

Sexy Time: Rape is Too Rampant

Most sexual assaults on college campuses are reported in September. The Department of Justice estimates that at least one in five women will be the victim of rape or attempted rape while she’s in college. Women between the ages of 16 and 24 are four times more likely to be raped than any other demographic of women. To say that this is frustrating and infuriating would be an understatement. The reasons for rape are numerous – between institutionalized patriarchy and general objectification of women to individual needs to assert power, combined with the fact that prosecution of rape is notoriously difficult equals a recipe for sexual violence against women.

In typical discussions of rape, there is a lot of emphasis on”prevention”, and the responsibility always seems to land on women. Rape is a unique crime in that it tends to inspire victim-blaming. If someone is mugged, for example, very rarely do people come out of the woodwork to say they were asking for it, that they could have prevented it, that because of their lack of character, they deserved it. When a woman is raped, it is because she was doing something to invite it. She shouldn’t have been [wearing a skirt/drinking/flirting]. Read More »

Ask a Roommate: Sharing Closet Space

Back-to-school shopping is wildly fun, especially when you’re in college. On top of needing things to wear to class, you’ll want some cute going out outfits, fun stuff to wear around the dorm, maybe some fierce accessories, oh snap — you can’t forget your handbag collection at home…and what about all your shoes? Those have got to come, too.

The thing about having a great wardrobe is that it’s all fun and games, until you need to split the closet with someone. Watch what Marysa has to say below about navigating these tricky roommate waters… Read More »
