10 Surprising Style Icons You Should Know

Yves St Laurent once said ”Fashion fades, style is eternal.”  I’ve always found this quote particularly interesting because it reminds us all that it’s not really so much about the clothes as it is about the way in which you wear the clothes. You can wear the most expensive outfit in the world, but that won’t guarantee you style. Style is personal. It comes from within. It’s unique and different and inspiring. It’s why we look back at Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O and Kate Moss and try to emulate their looks, why we try to find the same jacket Rachel Bilson wore to one event and the shoes Lauren Conrad wore to another.

But enough about those girls. You already know they’ve got style, now it’s time to find out who else does. Looking for a new style icon? Another fashionista’s footsteps to follow in, check out these ten right here.

Into to Cooking: Quick Chicken Florentine Pasta

There is something about Fall that makes me crave pasta. Maybe it’s the fact that temperatures are cooling down, I’m wearing more clothes that in the summer, and the holidays are coming up. Or maybe I just really love pasta. Either way, I’m always looking for ways to make pasta dishes healthier, and this is one I dreamed up after enjoying a delicious (but calorie-heavy) Chicken Florentine at a restaurant.

Spinach is one of the “superfoods” out there that is all benefit and no consequence. However, I’ll be the first to admit that spinach is also not the tastiest food I can think of! Sometimes, it can taste a little bit like dirt. To jazz it up, I like to wilt it down and add it to things – jarred spaghetti sauce, taco meat, pizza pockets… you name it, I can probably find a way to hide spinach in it. It instantly ups the healthiness factor without affecting calories and without having to choke down a bag of spinach.

The best part about this quick Chicken Florentine Pasta is that the cream sauce is not full of empty calories – there is no butter used here. By using the already flavorful Philadelphia Cooking Crème (a new product that I’m obsessed with), you save several steps of making your own sauce and calories by avoiding using half-and-half or heavy cream and lots of cheese. CC Beauty Live: Half Up Twisted Bun

It’s been a while since we had a hair tutorial, so I thought it was about time! I’m pretty busy during the day, which means I don’t have a lot of time to do my hair. And you all know I don’t wash it every day, but it’s still a hassle to keep up with. So quick and easy hair styles are essential for me, and they probably are for you too. I like styles that keep my hair out of the way so I can focus on everything else I have to deal with.

Half up is my go-to style because it’s the perfect combination, but it can be boring. That’s why I like to add braids, or in this video, twisted buns. It adds a little oomph to the typical half up hairdo. This style is super easy and quick so you’ll be able to snooze a bit more before class and still look cute when you get there.

On my face: Painted Earth Pore Perfecting Primer, Painted Earth concealer, Painted Earth Perfect Every Thyme Mineral Foundation, NARS Orgasm blush, Mary Kay eyeliner, Mary Kay lash love mascara, BITE Granache lipstick.

Got something you want me to cover? Post it in the comments below. And don’t forget to follow us on YouTube and check out my other videos right here! And for more beauty related tips, check out my website and follow me on Twitter!

I’m On A Boat: Sperry Rainboots

I will never be one of those girls who can pull off bright-colored rain boots. Some ladies can rock ducks, pieces of lemon, or polka dots and look pretty good. Whenever I so much as tried them on I have flashbacks of elementary school, complete with dunk-a-roos and fruit roll ups. I just feel silly. And now that this California girl has found herself attending school in Pittsburgh, rain boots were no longer a fashion option but a necessity.

I’ve been on the hunt for some more sophisticated rain boots. I was hoping to find a pair that look like a cute riding boot. Hunter boots seem to be the go-to college staple but I really wanted to find a pair that is a bit more feminine and less popular. For now anyway…

How to Get Ready for Class in 30 Minutes or Less

If I have learned one thing as an Economics major, it is that life is all about maximization. Maximize money, maximize efficiency, maximize time slept in. These lessons are applicable to college life outside the classroom, particularly when you are deciding between getting your beauty sleep and not looking like a hot mess for that 9 am class. I am pretty much the master of looking presentable in a jiffy. I have come to the realization that to get ready fast in the morning, you have to strategize. Invest some other time into your appearance so that you can hit the snooze button just one more time.

1. Shower at night. This also will usually save you from a hot water outage in the middle of winter. Bonus points if you sleep in the undies and undershirt you will wear the next day.

2. Don’t skimp on your face routine. The one thing that is non-negotiable is skin care. The healthier your face, the less time you will need on makeup. It is better to spend time preventing a problem than covering it up. Don’t forget to moisturize!

One Month Challenge: I Love My Body, Week Three

[Everyone’s got a vice, a bad habit, something they know they need to change. Unfortunately, everyone also has a million excuses why they just can’t do it. Not anymore. Every month we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer as she takes on a personal challenge. Last month Tiffany spent a month at Outward Bound and challenged her physical limits. This month, Ashley's going to try to stop hating on her body so much. Can she do it!? Could you?]

So here’s another thing this challenge has taught me about myself — It’s REALLY hard for me to keep my promises. But only when it comes to me, I always follow through with promises I make to other people. This is probably because when the person on the other end of the promise is me, there’s no one to hold me accountable for that promise. To be perfectly honest, I’ve fallen off a little this week. Here are the actions and comments that were not very “I love my body” friendly:

Actors Who Are Way Too Old to be Playing Freshmen

There seems to be an unwritten rule in Hollywood. Never play your own age. There’s long been a trend of teenagers being played by the 30-plus crowd. Turns out the same is true for college movies/TV shows. Here’s a few of the worst offenders.

Saturday Flashback: Mary Kate and Ashley Geography

In elementary school, all the subjects are taught as brief overviews rather than extensive lessons. For example, we learn “Language Arts” instead of Humanities or Language and Composition, “Math” isn’t “Algebra” or “Geometry,” and “Science” is growing little plants in plastic cups rather than beating yourself over the head with a massive AP Chem book. But as kids, we had two courses in Social Studies: “Social Studies” taught by teachers, and “Geography” taught by Mary Kate and Ashley. Thanks to their straight to VHS movies, little girls all over the nation had a comprehensive understanding of global studies, and furthermore which countries had the cutest boys.

Would You Wear Gorilla Arms

[This post comes hot off the Internet presses from our friends at CollegeFashion !]

When multiple designers (namely Tory Burch, Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander Wang & Roberto Cavalli), paired tailored jackets and coats with furry arms in their F/W 11 collections, the pieces were received with raised eyebrows. One can’t be expected to immediately fall in love with the trend dubbed “Gorilla Arms,” but might it be an acquired taste?

Curious as to what Gorilla Arms look like? Check it out here!
