Popping The Question: A Look At The “Bling” Then and Now

Even though I spent my weekend alternating between studying philosophy and studying jello shot recipes, people from my high school class were studying other things. Things like wedding dresses and bridal shower luncheon venues and destination wedding locations. Yep, even though we’re still in college, people I know are getting married. Personally, I don’t get it. I can’t commit to my favorite snack from day to day. How can someone our age commit to a human being forever? Oh I know. THE BLING! Nothing like a wedding ring to make you feel classy and mature! Okay, maybe that’s shallow. But why else would a 21 year old agree to settle down?
I don’t know. I do know there is a pretty cool infographic below explaining the history of proposals and engagement rings. Infographics chock full of fun trivia facts? That’s something I can commit to!

I would have to say that some of us got married at 21 (or 20, in my case) because we loved the person we were with so much, we couldn't bear to be away from them. My husband didn't get to go to college like I did, he's in the military and as a result, we would have been separated 99% of the time. I'm still chasing my dreams and am still in college but now I get to wake up every morning knowing that my bestfriend is right there beside me and always will be. To me, that seems way better than waking up next to some random dude (or chick) and trying to figure out WTF I did last night. I still participate in extra-curriculars and go to parties and everything else a normal college student does. Next time, try NOT to insult your readers no matter how small a percentage of us may be married.

I will also say that when we originally got married, I had a $100 ring from Wal-Mart because that's all we could afford and that served as my engagement ring and wedding band. It's not about feeling mature or being shallow and wanting a ring, it's about the love you feel for someone else.

Call me old fashioned but I'm holding out for a vintage ring! Something simple yet elegant, timeless and beautiful. I'm not a big rock kind of girl. Plus, the biggest bonus of marriage is going to be having a make-out partner for LIFE! I'm more interested in the buddy, not the bling.

My mom has a yellow gold ring with a smallish round diamond. I think it's beautiful, but she just got it redone.

The engagement ring was invented by De Beers, the diamond company. The only reason people started wearing them is because an advertising campaign told them to. Less romantic than pathetically shallow.
They serve an excellent function though. You can tell a lot about the personality of your potential spouse based on what she expects for a ring. If she needs a ring of high value, run…

I would have loved to see the average carat weight of diamonds compared like they did the average prices of the ring.
