The Weekly Ten: Things College Students Take For Granted

After living in the wonderful world of college dorms for the past four years there seem to have been quite a few things I took for granted…without realizing I was actually taking them for granted of course. Yes there are drawbacks to living under the roof that educates you: curfews, no illegal substances, limited guests, no toasters…(you get the point, I’m sure).
But as soon as you realize that those little draw backs aren’t that bad — it’s BAM — you’re on your own and taking two and half-minute showers just to be able to afford your rent. That’s with the part-time job you scored three months after graduation, and not including your income from various odd jobs you’ve been getting. And even though you can now hang your pictures with nails, which I’m sure is a huge bonus, there are other restrictions that you will have to abide to. Needless to say there are very few things I wouldn’t be willing to part with in order to get back the comfy dorm room living I’ve grown accustomed too.
So here are some things you should be thankful for having while living away from home:

I def took closeness for granted. I really miss not being steps away from my best friends!

I graduate in the spring, and I always think about all of the things I will miss about college. Being close to things like the gym and the dining hall is a huge thing I am going to miss.

Not just being close to the gym, but being able to go to the gym for free. Def did not appreciate that.

I’ve been out for two years this December – I’m living with my parents because I can’t afford to be out on my own (not without a roommate, but my previous horrific experiences with roommates have turned me off that idea). The things I miss most about college are easily the closeness of your friends, meals in the cafeteria (yes, it was usually swill, but it was swill I didn’t have to cook), and the SHOWER – the beautifully large shower with enough room to spread out (beautiful when you’re trying to shave long legs) and unlimited hot water. Plus, don’t know if anyone has thought about this, but in the real world there are NO spring breaks! I would kill for a week off, but I simply can’t afford to take one – with any luck I’ll be getting a new job soon and I’m going to quit my current job early so I can get a break. The only break I’ve had, I was in the ICU and almost died (let me tell you, not the best way to get a vacation – especially because after insurance, the bills were still more than my entire paycheck for the period I was sick would have been). On the other hand, no one is walking into your room, homework is something you don’t have to worry about, and if there’s someone you don’t like, you don’t have to see them!
