Nicole Richie Asks Girls Not to “Dress Slutty” This Halloween

It’s finally here: Halloweekend 2011. And though many choose to witty, creative or innovative with their costumes (like building a fully-functioning digital camera costume), most choose to simply…wear less. But Nicole Richie is not okay with that option.

“Girls, can we all pledge that we will not dress slutty for this Halloween?” she posted on her Facebook page earlier this week. “The jig is up!”

Hm, who exactly is the “jig” up for? Maybe Nicole thinks it’s completely unacceptable for 30-year-old mothers to parade around on Halloween in color little-to-nothings for fun. Nicole Richie used to be Paris’ sexy sidekick when out on the town and farming in the middle of nowhere, and maybe motherhood has simply moved her on to another phase of her life. One that involves wearing more fabric than others toward the end of the month of October.

But even more so, are slutty Halloween costumes putting us as women back a few steps as we allow others to openly objectify us without shame? Or, like an annual SlutWalk across campuses nationwide, are we refusing to set ourselves up as a target for sexual violence and actually exercising our right to our bodies, our sexuality and how we are seen by others? Guys get to do it ALL THE TIME and it rarely reflects negatively on their character in the ways that dressing up as a “sexy ____” does. Because hey, it’s Halloween, which means we get to have fun and pretend to be something we’re not. So even if I look like a little skanky or slutty or whatever other supposedly derogatory adjective that seems to be a connection between clothing choices and sexual female behavior, it doesn’t mean I am actually a skank or a slut, just like anyone who dresses up as Lady Gaga or a camera or Toy Story’s Woody character is not actually any of those things. So no matter what my costume is this year, I refuse to feel guilty for playing dress up, even if it doesn’t involve wearing a dress at all.

What do you think? Whose side are you on: Nicole’s or mine?  Should slutty Halloweens seriously be over for all women, even if it’s your first one?

I've never gone for the whole 'slutty halloween' thing. It seems to me that all these slutty costumes not only objectify women, but also discount everything else we have to offer. Plus, I don't see the point of wearing a slutty costume when you wouldn't want to dress like a slut in real life.

Coming from someone who has spent more time observing than participating in halloween festivities, the slutty costumes come off looking desperate.

A few things. First of all I am pretty sure the second sentence "And….isn't." is grammatically incorrect.

Secondly, this sounds like something straight out of Jenna Marbles latest video. (She's a youtube vlogger. If you don't know who she is I highly recommend you check her out. I find that you two will agree.) :)

Ah thanks for letting me know! And wow, I've watched Jenna Marbles before but I missed her latest video. Yeah, we're pretty much preaching the same thing here, except she's wearing some awesome eye make up and has an adorable dog while I'm typing these up on a Saturday morning in my pajamas.

Great article! You definitely have a point there, it shouldn't matter what we wear. It's our body, and we can do what we want with it. Of course, there are exceptions to that rule. No one wants to see a "sexy devil" at church.

I think there's fun slutty cosutmes and ridiculous slutty costumes. Sexy devil…okay. Sexy furniture salesman…maybe not so okay.

Dressing up in a slutty way does show its true colors. However, the men those women attract are also the men who think its comical to dress as some phallic symbol. I think the best, most sexy costume is to be something clever and rely on humor and gags as opposed to boobs and little brains.

I'm on the fence about slutty costumes. Part of me says wear what you want, you should have the freedom to dress how you like, especially on Halloween, without being judged, harassed, etc. And another part of me scoffs at the flagrant attention-whorism from scantily clad, barely covered "sexy" everythings.
I saw a friend on facebook, dressed in red underwear, covered only by what I can describe as a fishnet minidress – in 40 degree weather no less.
But it's the same on New Year's Eve. Here in Denver, there's snow on the ground and it's frigid, below freezing, yet every girl trots around in high heels and mini-dresses…even without a coat! I'm not kidding!

There's nothing that would make me crazy enough to risk hypothermia to look hot for strangers in December.
Halloween is fun, but it's the most fun for women who get self-gratification and an ego boost from being oogled at in their sexy costumes. Some do it for fun, some for attention, but I don't argue against their right to do either.

For the most part, I don't dress like a slut because it's too cold wear I live! Also, I have self respect, but it's really cold here.

Frankly, I think the "sexy" Halloween costumes are tacky, overdone, and objectifying. Why not show your smarts, creativity, and self-respect with a clever, more conservative costume?

I think its 100% okay. Its halloween and its supposed to be a fun night. Some people like to escape themselves and do things they would never do normally (i.e. dress slutty). Some people have amazing bodies and know it and get pleasure from showing them off. Some people may be naturally provocative and "slutty" costumes is just how that manifests. Some people might not be that creative and buying the risque costume at the store is easiest. Some people might be trying to add some fire to a relationship by wearing a scandalous outfit for their significant other on Halloween. And yeah, some people could be convinced that all they have to offer is their body and thats why they dress that way. But you can always tell when someone loves their costume and if they love their bra, thong and wings costume, cool. Rock on! I think some women have problems with it because they view it as being degrading to women which is totally true but I also think some women have an issue with it because it reflects their own insecurities back at them. "What an attention seeking whore!" can often translate to "I am not comfortable enough with how I look or my own sexuality to wear something like"

who cares it's halloween! it's fun to dress up, and if you want to be sexy go for it. besides, most likely you're dressing up to go to a party that you would ALREADY be dressing sexy for, so it's not like there's anything different.

If it lands on a Sunday…you might go in the morning? Or some churches have night services on various days of the week…

Halloween is about fantasy, and if you choose to dress up like a pumpkin instead of a sexy pastry chef or whatever, that's your choice. But it doesn't do us any good when we tear each other down.

Tell us what you're thinking...
