Web Spy: Health Month

We all know that we college students don’t always put as much emphasis on our health as we should. Instead of eating right, getting enough sleep, and exercising, we pig out on junk food, pull all-nighters and get drunk. And while we know we should take care of ourselves better, it’s hard to make a change all at once.

Health Month helps get you on a path to better health, a little bit at a time.

With Health Month, you choose (from their selection, or create your own) certain “rules” related to your health that you want to live by for the next month, and then Health Month turns these goals into a game. Here’s how it works: you start each month with 10 “life points,” and the goal is to end the month with at least one point (you lose points by failing to follow your goals). Log onto the site every day to track your progress and keep your points level up!

And Health Month isn’t just about losing weight, either. While there are diet- and weight-related goals, such as remembering to go to the gym or avoiding sweets, there are also goals related to other aspects of your well-being, such as meditating, writing in a personal journal and keeping in contact with friends and family.

The genius behind Health Month is that by only setting short-term goals, it seems easier to achieve them. The healthier you is just a month away!

In Defense of Slutty Halloween Costumes

In the wise words of Cady Heron, “In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” Amen. Now bring on the lingerie, fish nets, and bunny ears.

Stop rolling your eyes and shaking your head in disapproval. It’s one night…ONE NIGHT ( and by one, I mean Thursday, Friday, Saturday and whichever day is actually Halloween) You’re allowed to be a little risqué sometimes.

Okay, okay. Walking around in bras and panties with wings on your back saying you’re a “Victoria Secrets Model” goes a bit beyond being risqué. It’s more like…TOTALLY AWESOME. It’s Halloween people! You are not supposed to be yourself. You are supposed to be something you can never be on any other day of the year. If that means being a french maid or a Playboy Bunny then hey! go for it. Think of it this way: dress up as your childhood dream but with a twist…a slutty twist.

Sex in the News: Lesbian Couple Takes a Seat

There were so many things this week I could have written about. Anti-choice groups are increasing efforts to make accessing abortions more difficult without being illegal. A Senegalese organization is getting villages to agree to stop the practice of female genital mutilation.  But when I read about an elderly lesbian couple that staged a sit-in after being denied a marriage license in North Carolina, my topic was picked.

Coming across the We Do Campaign video, in which non-heterosexual couples go to apply for marriage licenses in North Carolina, a state in which gay marriage has not been legalized broke my heart. Writing about the divide in belief about same-sex marriage last week, brought up the point that there in some parts of the United States there isn’t a lot of support for legalization. Currently NC is waiting until May to vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that could ban both gay marriages and civil unions. Read More »

Global Warming To Spark Celeb Meltdown at Starbucks

Sometimes when people tell me that I should unplug my chargers when I’m not using them, or that I should not run my A/C as much as I do (I live in Florida!), I just brush it off. I understand and care about global warming and climate change, but it seems like such a big thing that nothing I do will help. BUT GUESS WHAT??? Climate change could ruin Starbucks! I’m going to start unplugging everything in my apartment because I don’t know what I’ll do if I can’t get my Java Chip Frappuccino in 20 years.

While we all know that college students rely on Starbucks to get them through all-nighters and early science labs, celebrities reply on Starbucks even more. I can’t go a day without seeing a paparazzi picture of some celebrity sipping through a green straw. What are these celebs going to do if climate change kills Starbucks? Maybe then their maids will have to make them coffee. GASP! Read More »

Tuffy Luv Hates Jerks

Dear Tuffy Luv,
I’m going back to college in the fall and I wanted to re-invent myself, still stay the same but have a total new outlook on life and a new attitude. Back as a freshman guys would make fun of me and torture me, and it was horrible. I wanted to go back in the fall as a new person, and have those guys who made fun of me not know what hit them. Also, I had a friends with benefits situation with one of my guy friends, and when I had asked him why he hooked up with me, he said along the lines of, ‘We’ll I was bored and I knew that you’d hookup with me.’ It was something much worse along those lines but it’s too embarrassing to disclose. SO, I wanted to know how do I show my ex-hookup buddy and those other guys that I’m tougher than ever and started a brand-new attitude?

Thanks for your help in advance,
Looking to find a new me

In Our Makeup Bag: Clarins Rouge Prodige Lipstick

What It Is:
Clarins Rouge Prodige True Color and Shine Lipstick in Rosy Coral and Peach Sorbet

Why This Should Be in Your Bag:

Lipstick and lipgloss are the bare necessities of everyone’s makeup stash. Every brand makes a million lip products, in just as many shades, finishes, etc, making it difficult to sort through and find the quality ones!

Clarins is a great, yet underrated brand that puts out amazing stuff. Not only do they pay attention to packaging and design, but the product inside always matches the beautiful exterior. Clarins has a huge range of colors in this formula, two of which I’ve taken for a test drive here.

How To Use It:

These lipsticks are super moisturizing and creamy. This means that you’ll want to exfoliate your lips before wearing; any creamy lip products will cling to dead skin (yes, gross). After exfoliating with a lip scrub or plain old sugar, you’ll want to apply these straight from the tube. They are very thick and need the heat of your lips to warm them up! Be careful – if you roll the tube up too high, you risk breaking off the lipstick, as you do have to use quite a bit of pressure. Read More »

What Celebrity Perfumes Really Smell Like

Did you buy Justin Bieber’s new perfume? No?? Then congrats, you’re of the three people in the world who haven’t spray themselves with Someday yet. According to a press release we received, Someday is on its way to becoming the number 1 selling fragrance of the year. This is a perfume that was made by a guy for a woman. If most guys made a perfume for woman, it would smell like pizza and an XBox. However, Justin’s perfume apparently has a fruity smell that’s perfect for 14 to 18-year-old girls. This got us thinking, what do you think these celebrity perfumes really smell like?

Although all of the other celeb perfumes probably smell classically fruity, woodsy or floral, I’d think they should smell like the true essence of our favorite stars. Here’s my take on some popular famous people’s fragrances. Read More »
