15 Delicious Desserts to Jump-Start Your Day

If you planned on starting a diet today, don’t. Or at least don’t read any further. That salad with the “but it tastes just like the real thing” low-fat dressing and droopy lettuce is going to seem about ten times less appetizing than it did when you were looking at pictures of Kate Middleton, thinking to yourself I wish I was that skinny. Embrace a little sugar in your day. Load up on some visual carbs.

Feast your eyes, baby! Right now, we’re bringing you the anti-healthy lunch. Read More »

10 Things You Should Lie About

Look, people say lies serve no purpose and that honesty is the best policy. Is it? Is it even possible? Should it be the law of the land or just a nice ideal to attempt to live up to? I mean, there are some things you just don’t want to cop to, especially when you don’t know the person all that well. In the beginning, lying can be a way to tip-toe toward trust. Sounds illogical? What about life isn’t?

So the question becomes, what is it okay to lie about?

Criminal History
You don’t start a date with, “so I just got out of prison for taking an axe to my ex because she wouldn’t give me back my Battlestar Galactica blu-ray set. I mean, it was the COMPLETE SERIES! Do you want an appetizer?” DATE OVER! Unless her name’s Lumen and your name’s Dexter, keeping mum about your dark passenger might not be a bad policy until, maybe, date number 3? 30?

October is National Coming Out Month!

On Tuesday, October 11th at 7pm, MTV will air ‘Coming Out’, a special one-hour documentary following two young adults in the final phase of their remarkable coming out journey. The TV network, known for its list of controversial, in-your-face shows over the years, chose to air the show on the 11th as the nation celebrates National Coming Out Day.

This is the one day a year that we chose to nationally praise the LGBT community in their quest for equality. Unfortunately, this positive, uplifting event only lasts 24 hours long. One day, folks, is not enough.

Rent The Runway Look of the Week: Date Party

It’s officially that time of year. Sorority girls chat, gossip, and turn miniscule situations into reasons to panic. Just a little bit of drama seems to follow every set of sorority letters walking around campus.

Why is there so much commotion out of the blue?  Well, Crush Party is coming up! Who would have thought that a four hour event could stir up so much trouble. Welcome to Greek life.

Over at CollegeCandy we may not be able to steal your date back from your sister who managed to ask him first, or take care of your little who had a drink (or five) too many… but we can help you find the perfect dress on Rent The Runway!

As these date parties are such a big whoop, I couldn’t help myself—I had to select two looks this week, both of which are of a really different style. What can I say, I aim to please…

Look: 1 Edgy and Fun

You’ll stand out in this cute Tibi mini dress. It’s flirty, trendy and, personally, I’m all about metallics.

Versatile Style: Motel Kylie Color Block Skirt

This week, I saw a particularly eye-catching item while browsing online and knew it needed its own feature. It’s funky, chic and sure to be a conversation piece, but is also appropriate for business casual environments or an interview. May I present the Motel Kylie Color Block Skirt!

Motel is a funky brand that I’ve featured in the column before (check it here). They always strive to put out unique pieces and didn’t let us down with the Kylie Skirt! Motel has taken a closet staple (the pencil skirt) and transformed it into something fresh. The color block trend has been all the rage for a while now, but applying that to a skirt is something I’ve yet to see. The guess work is taken out of it for you, as all you have to do is add a top in black, white or a color from the skirt and you’re good to go!

I decided to use this skirt in a business outfit and another for a night on the town! I’ll start with business casual.

Like I said, basic white pairs perfectly with this skirt. I chose a sleeveless blouse with a bow-tie neck to up the dressiness. Add a loose, black cardi to cover up your arms if your workplace requires that. I also chose plain black flats for shoes as they are totally demure. I didn’t want the add-ons to be void of color, so I chose an orange satchel. The briefcase inspired bag is HUGE right now, plus it’s a professional shape. Top off with some chic bracelets and you’re ready!

And now night.

Again, going with a neutral top, this time in black, however it does have some interesting detailing! I knew I wanted to match the shoes and clutch to the skirt and was so thrilled to find both! Both feature textured materials to keep everything from looking flat. Stick to basic black for your accessories; you want to include them, but not have them be too loud, especially with a colorful clutch and shoes! And that’s it!

I hope you love the Motel Kylie Skirt as much as I do and see all the fashion potential just waiting for you! You can get it from Revolve Clothing and a few other online retailers.

Current Events Cheat Sheet: Occupy Wall Street Meets Gossip Girl

The Occupy Wall Street protests that began in New York City’s financial district have spread across the country, uniting Americans against corporate, greedy interest. Or at least, that’s what we think they’re uniting against. The movement is highly unorganized and without any clear demands. On the one hand, this makes it harder to actually accomplish anything tangible. But on the other, it makes the movement all the more authentic for every person who shows up with handmade, anti-Wall Street poster in hand (such as Penn Badgley…) Protests have spread to every major city, including a notable, 4,000-strong demonstration in Portland, as well as many universities. As for the unavoidable, stupid response from a politician, presidential candidate Herman Cain weighed in: “Don’t blame Wall Street, don’t blame the big banks, if you don’t have a job and you’re not rich, blame yourself!” Read More »

Body Blog: Male Birth Control?

Male and female condoms. Birth control pills, shots, patches and rings. As a smart, independent college woman, you’re no doubt familiar with the range of contraceptive options. But soon, a new one may be added to the list – male hormonal birth control.

Over the last several years, hints at the possibility of a reversible form of male birth control have popped up here and there. But new research is providing evidence that a safe, effective form of hormonal birth control for guys is well within reach. And the idea has already built up strong support. This month, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will hold a conference to discuss the recent advances in male birth control research.

There are several potential forms of birth control for men, all of which are being thoroughly researched. One method is very similar to existing female birth control pills. It uses the hormones testosterone and progestin to send signals to the body to stop producing sperm. However, there are still issues with side effects for this method in some men. One side effect may surprise you – drinking alcohol when taking these drugs makes patients sick. So, maybe this one isn’t quite ready for college. Read More »
