Literally the Most Annoying Words of 2011. For Real.

In a recent survey done by The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, “whatever” was voted as the most annoying word of 2011, followed by “like” and “y’know.”  I understand why these words irritate many adults, but I was surprised that there weren’t more words and phrases chosen that surpassed the irritation levels of “whatever.” Where is “OH EM GEE” or “LOL”? I wish that annoying phrases were also a part of this survey because I can think of a few dumb ones that I wouldn’t lost sleep over never hearing again in 2012.

“Whatever” is really the best we can do? No way. So I’ve compiled a list of words and phrases that are way more annoying than “whatever.” Enjoy!

Any annoying words/phrases that I missed? Disagree with the ones I chose? Let me know!

I've never heard someone seriously use the word 'fo sho', but totes is on my kill list. And my bff now shortens obviously to 'obvi!" I could strangle her.

Come at me bro! is another saying I never want to hear again.

    1. Molly - UNL says:

Obvi is the worst abbreviated word ever. It makes me cringe, and I hate when people say "get at me" especially via facebook like – "I'm home for break – get at me!"

      No. :)

    What about betch and hashtag?

    1. Maura - Rider University says:

I've heard people use hashtag in normal conversation, like what? Thats like saying LOL in a conversation. Not right!

"I gotta…, you gotta,… she/he's gotta…" annoys me. "At the end of the day" (why not mid day or late in the day?). Starting sentences with "look" ( how do you look at something being said?). "Panties"…. seriously? Would men tolerate having their underwear called "shorties"? Sounds as stupid as "sockies", shoesies", etc. Grow up women. You wear underwear or briefs. No one wears anything even close to pants under their slacks or skirts.
