Drop the phrase “web series” in conversation to me, and there’s a good chance I’ll tune out whatever you say after it. People who watch web series fall into the same category as people who watch straight-to-TV movies, as far as I’m concerned. They’re your basic Lifetime-loving, lonely cat ladies with a sweet spot for Mario Lopez. Do I want to join that crowd? No, I do not.
So when one of my coworkers sent me a link to the new Sh*t Girls Say web series, needless to say I was skeptical. With the caution of someone approaching a leper, I clicked play, cringing as I did so. But what happened over the next 79 seconds was nothing short of life changing. Why was I laughing? Why the hell did I borderline identify with these scenarios? What kind of crazy person have I turned into? OMG is that Juliette Lewis!?
Have a look for yourself at what very well might be the greatest thing since…well…I don’t know…that other web series you loved. Read More »
Last night, Robin Lin, an American woman, was named the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year. She was nominated due to her passion for helping thousands of women in Indonesia have healthy pregnancies and births. She has set up a health clinic that provides free prenatal care and and medical aid for families that cannot afford it. Lin was awarded this honor by the public.
In a world where we spend a lot of time talking about celebrities and obsessing over our looks (we’re guilty of both), it’s good to remember that there are better people out there to talk about and more important things to care about. This amazing example in female empowerment just goes to show what women can do in a “man’s world.” With people like Lin leading the way, women are showing just what they can accomplish with some hard work and a lot compassion. Girl power!
Today, the Men in Black 3 trailer came out and that got me thinking about Men in Black (the first one), which came out in 1997! That was 14 years ago. Willow Smith wasn’t even born yet! Do you think the third installment will be just as fun as the first?
Watching that trailer and thinking about the first movie makes me nostalgic about 1997. That was a major year for pop culture, and for the shaping of my childhood. Would I still be the same person if I didn’t watch Leonardo DiCaprio proclaim he was the king of the world a thousand times in 1997? Probably not. So I’m going to re-live 1997 and everything I loved about it right now. Read More »
When the almighty Facebook was first created, it was intended to be a network devoted to fostering connections with future classmates (and friends) at your future school. Fast forward a few years and Facebook is a melting pot for parents, preteens, companies, celebrities and anything else you can imagine Facebook connecting you to.
Remember when MySpace was cool? Well, as is often said around the office: MySpace is the poor man’s Facebook. Or if that doesn’t work for you, how about this: MySpace is the pedophile’s Facebook. You might prefer one to the other but both get an A for being equally acceptable judgments. Although MySpace might take the cake for the invention of the duck-beak, kissy-face photos that girls just love to post as their default.
Moral of the story: When Facebook hit the scene, America nixed MySpace quicker than Ronnie could pass on Sammi. Read More »
The realm of oral contraceptives is getting a bit messy these days. Some of you may remember my issues with the birth control pill, Yaz. After surviving a pulmonary embolism, I can now consider myself relatively healthy although doctors are not sure if I will have more complications in the future. Even though I’ve been off my medication for two and a half years, I am still dealing with what happened everyday. There are still things I have to avoid like soy products, it makes me paranoid to be around people that smoke, and any time I have pains in my chest I freak out. The mental and emotional aspects of what happened are still very much a part of my life. It’s been almost three years since I was in the hospital for my birth control, and it seems that just now the FDA is taking it seriously.
I came across this article while researching my injury in 2009 that says Bayer was forced to spend more than $20 million in corrective advertising after they falsely advertised Yaz. The FDA complained that their “two television ads overstated the drug’s benefits while understating its risks.” After a lot of careful thought, I ended up filing a complaint last year along with thousands of other women and the first trials are happening next month. The trials are broken down by injury, and pulmonary embolisms are first on the list. I’m a mix between nervous and excited about the whole thing, especially since it’s been so long. I didn’t know when this first happened that facing Bayer would even be an option, but I’m glad that I went through with it. In addition to this lawsuit, Bayer is now facing the FDA on claims that they withheld important information regarding the increased risk of blood clots in Yasmin and Yaz. Read More »

Right now, I’m full-swing in exam mode and dreaming of the moment I can let loose and have a night out. It doesn’t need to be wild, just something fun with people I care about. I’ve been keeping my eye out for a cute outfit I can wear out with friends, while grabbing coffee or catching a movie. I’ve also realized that I’m missing shoes in the mid-casual category; shoes that are casual, but not as casual as my Chuck Taylors. Enter the Coconuts Clooney Boot!
This boot is made from synthetic microfiber and features great lace-up detail. My favorite part of this boot is the wedge heel. It’s so unexpected! It has the casualness of a desert boot, but the wedge adds a little bit of fancy. Let’s start with a daytime outfit. Read More »
