After watching multiple episodes of the Internet series, “Sh*t Girls Say,” then watching the racial twist, “Sh*t White Girls Say to Black Girls,” that parodies oblivious racial slurs, I literally laughed out loud and shook my head in agreement after every dumb statement. This is sad, but true. I have played the “token black girl” almost all of my life, so I’ve heard these statements before. “Is your real hair?”  “Can I touch it?” “OMG, in the summer I’m going to tan so I can get just as dark as you, we will be twins!” “Maya, why do ALL black guys say this?” “Maya, not to sound racist, BUT…” Yes, it is true, girls really do say this!

In all of my extracurricular activities, and growing up in a predominantly white environment, I’ve been someone’s “Favorite Black Girl” my whole life. I’ve been bombarded with these questions and statements countless times. Many times the silly accusations they have surprise me. It was just not girls saying these things, but boys too! I wondered, “Do some people really think like this?” Most of the time I will respond by laughing and answering honestly. My goal is to educate, because most of them really just DON’T KNOW. I mean we are all ignorant of some things, but a lot of times I wonder, really?

    REALLY?! I know this chick who said to me one day when I wouldn’t give an Oreo and she said “it’s cuz I’m black huh?” I almost said its cuz I white right? But I remembered I ain’t white my friend was standing next to me and said “Sandy is defiently not racist” no shiz I ain’t. Another time my friend (who’s Mexican) said something backwards by accident like “A strongly lettered word” and he was like “nvm” then I said “can we write a strongly worded letter” which is what he meant to say so he yells out “it’s cuz youre white!” half the class was like ooooh racist I said ” still aint white” he’s ALWAYS giving me crap about being native American and being like a little white so I’m pale in the winter but red/black in the summer
